Alona Beach is the most popular beach in Panglao Island. It's a favorite for tourists coz of the many choices you can have. You can also choose from among the resto/bars lining the beach. Prices can vary depending on your choice. The beach is very nice with white powdery sand. The only drawback is that the beach is not clean. Plenty of debris like coconut shells & seagrass are washed ashore. The only clean beachfront are the beach resorts of Alona Tropical & Alona Palm.
I had fond memories of Alona in 2009, when I went there, so we decided to return for Xmas 2010.
In that one year, the small segment of the beach that wasn't developed got paved over with something. Also, the qualty of Alona deteoriated to the point that I decided to never go back.
Alona looked more like a pier than a beach. There were boats every 10 metres or so in the water, parked near enough to the beach to cause a disruption in local swimming. Also, most parts of the water were covered with weeds on the bottom after 5 metres or so off the beach. I didn't like the feeling of it on my skin.
Another problem with Alona is that there are very few beach chairs or umbreallas for rent. The few that are there get reserved for local guests.
My tip: Go to Oops Cafe, sit at a table and order a few drinks. The owner will tolerate you being there for a few hours. Also, in front of Oops, the water is the best.
