YOU SHOULD TRY SA-ANG
  • Tip Rating:
  • Being an island, Panglao Island is teeming with aquatic resources which also provide food and livelihood for the locals. The seafood which I fancy the most when I am in Panglao is SA-ANG ANON or simply SA-ANG. It is a seashell and the little "creature" inside is a delicious treat. I love sa-ang, whether kinilaw or grilled. It can be bought at the stores which lined the road going to Duljo and in these stores, the little "creature" inside the shell had already been extracted and ready to cook. Some stores sell them frozen. Every Tuesday and Thursday night, the restaurants along Alona Beach include Sa-ang in their fare and they are grilled before your eyes. It is quite a challenge to extricate the flesh from the shell. The food stall in front of Oasis is my favorite grilling place and they always have Sa-ang.

Hinagdanan Cave is located at Barangay Bingag, Dauis, Panglao Island. Dauis is one of the towns of Panglao Island, the other one is Panglao and Dauis is just 5 minutes from Tagbilaran City. Hinagdanan Cave is un underground cave with a lagoon inside. The name Hinagdanan is derived from the word "hagdan" or stairs. There are two holes on the ceiling of the cave , allowing some sunlight inside the dark cave. The steps are slippery that is why they made a crude railing made of rope to guide you inside the cave.

    Recharge With a Body Massage
  • Tip Rating:
  • Feeling lo-batt like a cellphone after a tiresome day? Along the stretch of Alona Beach are locals offering massage service for that needed recharging. I prefer being pampered by the beach under towering coconut trees with the sound of breaking surf and soft breeze giving that soothing (and eventually, sleepy) feeling. These trained attendants are professionals. You can request the softness/hardness of their hands massage that suits you best. P150/hr by the beach. P250/hr for room service.

  • Address: Alona Beach, Panglao Island
  • Directions: More than a dozen attendants in light-blue uniform can be seen walking along the stretch of Alona Beach offering their services.

    Alona Kew
  • Tip Rating:
  • Alona Kew is just but one of the many beaches in Panglao Island, but but certainly it is the most popular. One can always find a variety of resorts and accommodation in the area ranging from budget to plosh ones. One of the best knowns is Alona Kew Beach Resort but you can always check out along the beach, Alona Tropical, Bohol Island Divers or Alona Palm.

  • Address: Alona Kew, Panglao Island
  • Phone: (63)-038-4114548
  • Directions: Hire a cab from any of the local companies or the private-for-hire cars in Tagbilaran Airport. Cost of taxi is the total meter rate x 2 as Panglao is out of the City of Tagbilaran. Taxi company like Variscon has trust-worthy drivers. Check them out.

    Amazing Hinagdanan Cave.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Upon reaching the place and getting off from our van, a cluster of souvenir shops was all there we see. Then as shown the way, who would ever wonder that a small hole (about 1m in diameter) on the ground at the sides of these shops is the entrance to this amazing cave - the Hinagdanan Cave. The entrance have been provided with cemented stairs for easy access into the cave for the never-ending stream of tourists. 2 more holes on the other end provide natural lighting with the help of electric light provided on some dim areas. The story goes that the cave was accidentally discovered when a decaying tree trunk was removed on the ground surface thereby exposing a deep hole on the ground. Exploring the hole, the discoverer was amazed to see a very spacious cave with stalactites/stalagmites and a water pool inside of it. Eversince, it has been used by locals as a source of water. The time we went there, a group of people were taking a dip and swimming on the clear water pool (about 2m at the deepest). Ahhh, refreshing!

  • Address: Panglao Island
  • Directions: The usual day-tour offered by operators would surely take you here.

    Visita Iglesia - Dauis Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Spaniards in their colonizing years in the 16th-19th century have built many churches in the Island of Bohol. About a dozenful scattered all over the island early settlements, Daus Church is the one built for the nearby sub-island of Panglao. Up close would reveal an architectural classic - a building made of local coral stones preserved to its original centuries-old designs. Built in the late 17th century, the church very wide ceilings are decorated with paintings of beautiful frescoes. I just wonder hwo long did it take to finish such a work. A very interesting story as told by locals about the church is when the island inhabitants one time locked themselves up inside the church to seek refuge from invading pirates. Having to be safely inside without getting out for a very long time, they were about to starve. But miraculously, a well suddenly sprouted near the altar giving them water to drink. Up to these days, the water from the well is believed to have miraculous healing powers attracting the faithfuls of the church patroness, the Virgin of Assumption, all throughout the year.

  • Address: Dauis, Panglao Island.
  • Directions: Upon crossing the bridge that connects Tagbilaran to the island of Panglao, the Dauis Church would not escape anybody’s attention, being a very prominent edifice in the coast of Panglao facing mainland Bohol.

Arco Point - BBC Dive Site (Bohol Beach Club)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Some dive master called it "hole in the wall" because there is one tunnel for us to dive through starting from 8 meters till almost 18 meters which can be quite tricky because you need to equalize to reduce the squeeze, you need to dive through at the right level to prevent knocking the cave ceiling and not too low to kick the coral at the bottom. To make it more difficult, you start to see big scorpionfishes, lionfishes and nudibranches as you attempt the dive through. It's like you need so much concentration to resist distractions. Of course the excitements of your dive not just end after the cave. The remaining wall dive is excellent with great visibility when i dive. Big school of tuna & jacks swimming at the deeper end of the wall, big frogfishes, morays and some transparent sea squirts keep attract your attention. You need to be intermediate diver to dive Arco Point. I dove at Pangloa few weeks after the typhoon hitting Philippines and the effects of typhoon can clearly seen underwater as many corals, sea squirts, frogfishes, lionfishes are covered with some sand here and there. I just cannot imagine how beautiful the Arco Point would be if typhoon had not stirred those sand from BBC beaches onto creatures and corals here.

Tour Around Bohol - Allot One Whole Day.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Either you book a tour from operators or do it backpacking style on your own. Bohol has a lot of unique activities/places to offer. Never ever miss the "Tarsier Encounter" and more. Guided tour package would be around P1000/person inclusive of entrance fees and the prime event Loboc River Cruise w/ sumptous buffet lunch. Some places not to miss: -Hinagdanan Cave, -Blood Compact Monument, -Baclayon Church/Museum, -Manmade Forrest, -Chocolate Hills. Having the whole day till sunset to spend, extending the tour around the northeast coast of Bohol is recommended to optimize. From Choco Hills, dont backtrack to Tagbilaran but go around a loop instead via the towns of Tubigon and Loon and be able to tour these additional places: -Sagbayan Peak, -3 to 4 old churches on towns along the route, -Punta Cruz (the sunset would be timely here)

    Wall Dives at Balicasag Island
  • Tip Rating:
  • Balicasag Island is probably one of the best-known diving locations in the Visayans. When you're diving at Fish Sanctuary and Rudy's Rock, you'll often need to achieve neutral buoyancy in order to enjoy the wall dive & the array of fishes, corals and sea squirts will surely amazed you. If you sign up with good dive centre with great dive master, they will know the right direction of drift for your wall dive. During the dive brief, your dive master will probably tell you the special/residence creatures at the site. Do ask them to point out to you if you're still not quite an underwater naturalist yet. Just achieve neutral buoyancy and drift on.

Ok, this is not suppose to be a spooky tip of what i encountered underwater, but just to share some variations of creatures that i seen before, but different from the regular kind. Previously, these beautiful nudibranches, corals, shrimps can be right in front of my face and I won’t see them. But lately, I have developed better ability to spot irregular colors and identify them by their characteristics and associate them with names underwater (when my brain running at half speed). Even my niece learns fast that nudibranches are snails without shells and they come with various colors and shapes. She even calls the green nudibranch's gills as "vegetable", just click into the photo and you’ll sure to agree with her.
