Shopping for Pasalubongs

by watersofmarch

There are lots of pasalubong options in Camiguin, you can buy Vjandep Pastel (pronounced with silent J); Lanzones; Shirts; Camiguin Coke Bottles; Soling’s Piniato (Peanut brittle with Honey); La Salud Turrones de Mani; Homemade Camiguin Chocolate. We bought several boxes of Vjandep pastel since its a very popular delicacy. We soo loved it!!!! Pastels are buns with yema filling inside. They have other filling options - ube cheese etc. We wanted to try the cheese however they didnt have it at that time and it has to be ordered in advance. One box with 12 pieces costs 112 pesos. Despite all our efforts to bargain, the tinderas didnt budge. But they let us sample the pastels. The piniato is also a popular product of camiguin. Though its the same old peanut brittle, its different from the ones sold in Bagui coz these ones uses whole peanuts, honey and molded into sticks! yum!Souvenir shirts...

Vjandep: For the sweet tooth...

by gen_aquino

It's a simple bakery with delightful assortment of pastel flavors. The pastel in Camiguin is a yema-filled bun. (yema is a philippine sweet made of milk and caramel) This can be eaten as a snack or dessert. Reminder to parents: ask your kids to eat their regular meals before asking them to sample the paste. Otherwise, be prepared to have your little ones miss their meal and opt to eat pastel all day... :)These are prepared fresh everyday. Each box comes with a best before date. These may be refrigerated to last a bit longer but I suggest to have it reheated in a conventional or toaster oven to make the yema filling warm and gooey. I didn't like the consistency after putting it inside the microwave so try this method with care. Less than 100pesos for a small box and prices range depending on the variety/flavor and quantity.
