Magellan Shrine by ahoerner This shrine marks Ferndinand Magellan's catholic legacy. It is a stone rotunda, built in 1841. In 1521 the portuguese explorer at service to the Spanish King arrived in Cebu and planted a wooden crucifix on the shores of Mactan. Shortly after, during battles with Chieftain Lapu-Lapu Magellan died. A painting on the ceiling of the rotunda shows Magellan planting the cross. The smallest and oldest tri-bastion fort in the country. This served as the nucleus of the Spanish settlement in the Philippines. It has a total inside area of 2,025 sq. meters. The walls are 20 feet high, 8 feet thick, and the tower is 30 feet high from the ground. Work was first started on May 8, 1565 with Miguel Lopez De Legazpi breaking the ground. After the battle of Manila Bay, Commodore George Dewey turned the fort to the local Cebuanos, and then it became the American Warwick Barracks during the American Regime, which was later converted into classrooms where the Cebuanos received formal education. During World War II, from 1941 to 1945, it served as fortification for Japanese soldiers. When the battle for liberation was fought, the fort served as an army camp. After 1950, Cebu Garden Club took over and fixed the inner court into a miniature garden. For a couple of years it also housed the Cebu City Zoo. In 1978 to August 15, 1993, it housed the offices of Department of Tourism and the Philippine Tourism Authority. At present, it is under the care and administration of the PTA and now houses the National Museum that showcases the San Diego shipwreck & Fort San Pedro diggings. Taking pictures in the musuem is not allowed. Leave a Comment Address: Pier area, Cebu City

Olango Island Hopping by limledi Island hopping is very popular in Olango Island. It is a long island visible from Maribago and Marigondon. It has small white beaches and beautiful stands of palms providing shade. There's also an extensive lagoon which was declared a sanctuary for migratory birds in 1992, the first of its kind in the Philippines. Plovers, sandpipers and egrets are some of the birds which can be seen here. The best time for bird watching is October and November. Swimming and snorkelling can be done in the fish sanctuary which charges P50/pax. Unfortunately much of the coral has been destroyed by dynamite fishing. You can have lunch at the many floating restaurants dotting offshore. A bit costly though but plenty of fresh seafoods to choose from. Address: Olango Island, Central CebuDirections: Hire a boat. The trip from Maribago to Olango Island costs P20/pax by outrigger boat, so a Special Ride should cost about P200. However, operators have been known to ask up to P500. Whole day boat rental costs P2500 good for 25 persons.

Located in the wealthy residential suburb of Beverly Hills about 6 km north of downtown Cebu is an enormous Taoist Temple. It was built by Cebu's substantial Chinese community (the Chinese make up about 15% of Cebu's population). The temple is the a center of worship for Taoism, the religion which follows the teachings of the ancient Chinese philosopher, Lao Tze. You can see Taoist devotees following their rituals on Wednesdays and Sundays, as they climb the 99 steps of the temple to light joss sticks and have their fortunes read by the monks. Built in 1972, the Taoist Temple is constructed in a highly ornate and, some would say, gaudy style of Chinese architecture, and is topped with a pagoda-style roof. The temple has an elevation of 300 meters above sea level, thus if you are at the entrane, you will be rewarded with a good view of Cebu City and in the distance you will see Mactan and Bohol islands. Nice sunset views too. Leave a Comment Address: Beverly Hills

by barbskie Situated in the capital city of Cebu, built in April 21, 1521 by Ferdinand Magellan. Here is the spot where the first Christian Filipinos, Rajah Humabon and Queen Juana and about 400 followers, were baptized by Fr. Pedro Valderema. In 1525 to 1740, the Agustinian priests built an open shrine for the cross but the natives began to take chips from the cross believing it had miraculous power so a kiosk-like structure was built to protect the cross from total destruction. To protect it further, a hollow cross of wood was made to encase the original cross which still stands today. Leave a Comment Address: Magallanes St, Cebu City

In the midst of lush tropical vegetation in the mountains near Matutinao you can find the refreshingly cool, crystal clear Kawasan Falls. They are probably the best waterfalls on Cebu, and the natural pools are great for swimming & rafting (P300/hr). This idyllic place is a good starting point for mountain treks. There is a P10 entrance fee, and they charge P50 for the use of the tables, even if you order a drink with the owner. Address: Matutinao, South CebuDirections: Take jeepney or bus from Moalboal to Matutinao. Trip takes 45 mins. Get off at the church in Matutinao and follow the trail upriver on foot. This will take you about 15 min.Website: www.moalboal.com

Ayala Center Cebu by limledi A combination of food, drink and entertainment is drawing more and more people into so-called 'resto bars' and 'sport bars'. Ayala Entertainment Center is one such venue. This is also one of Cebu's top nightlife spot. During daytime, you can enjoy shopping to your heart's content. There's also children's Timezone where they can enjoy playing games. Definitely my top choice in Cebu with regards to shopping with plenty of choices to choose from. Cinemas are located at the top floor in this huge complex. Address: Ayala Center CebuPhone: 032-2315342Directions: Take jeepneys plying Archbishop Reyes Avenue route. Casa Gorordo main balcony. by ahoerner This amazing example of a Spanish farmhouse just as it was on colonial times is a must visit in Cebu. Original furniture in Spanish style and the building itself turned this visit out to be one of the most interesting ones in Cebu. Leave a Comment Address: 35 Jaena St.
