The Jumalon Butterfly Sanctuary

by berenices

A fascinating place showcasing the extensive butterfly collection of the late Professor Julian Jumalon, including a small butterfly breeding area and his works of art. The so-called sanctuary is just the old residence of his family, where his daughter still lives and who now is in charge of the collection. His butterfly collection is vast and impressive, and the "paintings" he did using butterfly wings are unique and interesting. The latter are housed in a separate structure from the main house. When we visited, we had the fortune of speaking with the professor's daughter who kindly gave us a tour of the place. We found out that despite its being quite known as a local attraction, and always a destination for school's educational trips, and being subject of various studies, the sanctuary has not received support, including financial, from the local government to maintain or expand the...

Visit the Fuerza San Pedro

by monina_c

This fort is considered to be the smallest, oldest, most well preserved fort in the country. It was built by the soldiers under the command of the Spanish Conquistador, Miguel Lopez de Legaspi in 1565 and was completed in 1738 after much refurbishment. It has a museum which features, paintings, sculptures and other artifacts. The fort had a school and gardens. The Department of Tourism Office in the fort accepts tourism students as apprentice tourist guides so there is no lack of eager cicerone to take you around the place.

Costabella Beach

by Iluv2surf2

Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing. Sleep, relax, special time with your wife and family. Costabella Beach has several things to do. If swimming in the ocean isn't what you like they have two pools to choose from. One pool has a really neat slide and the other has a childrens shallow section.Boats can be rented, jet skis are available and some of the locals will take you to neighboring islands for snorkeling or fishing. These guys are entreprenuers. They seem a bit shady, but we understand they're OK, just really rough around the edges.Nearby there is parasailing. I wanted to try it, sort of. I don't do real well with heights, and that would probably cause me to fill my shorts with bricks!!!

Relaxing

by Iluv2surf2

There's nothing like really, really relaxing about 1/2 way through your trip. Not that the other parts wern't relaxing, but to just relax and do nothing at your own pace is really GREAT! We spent several days at Costabella Beach Resort near Cebu.

Fort San Pedro

by bike_packer

Fort Santiago is to Manila while Fort San Pedro is to Cebu. Fort San Pedro has served its life in various roles throughout the years since first constructed. Built in 1738 at the initiative of Juan Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, it is the smallest and oldest bastion in the country built to repel Muslim raiders. At times, it served as a stronghold for Filipino revolutionaries, as a US Army barracks, and as a prison camp during the Japanese occupation.Restored and preserved, Fort San Pedro now is a historical park w/ a museum on its 2nd floor. This triangular-shaped fort has a well-maintained lush garden at the center open area where visitors could take a refreshing break when touring the fort under the shades of age-old trees and vine-covered trellis-pathways

Marcelo Fernan Bridge

by bike_packer

One of only 2 bridges that connects Cebu to Mactan Island and the newest, M. Fernan Bridge has a cable-stayed design structure with 3 spans. The 2 main towers being erected a distance away from the banks. Btw, the 2 bridges built across the Mactan Strait were designed high enough to accomodate even big ships to pass under, considering that the Cebu Seaport is practically within the area and being the busiest in Central Philippines. The construction of this bridge relieved the once heavy vehicle traffic between Cebu and Mactan as served by the other old bridge. Named after a former SC Justice and son of Cebu, this new bridge structure design adds fresh look of emerging Cebu as a busy business center.

Climb the 99 steps of the Taoist Temple

by monina_c

This temple follows the teachings of Lao Tze. Devotees climb the 99 steps of the temple, light joss sticks and have their fortunes read by the monks. They undertake ritualistic activities on Wednesdays and Sundays. When climbing the steps you may want to rest a bit and gaze at the scene of downtown Cebu and if you're lucky, a glimpse of Mactan and maybe Bohol. There is a souvenir shop in the compound where you can get objects which are guaranteed to bring you fortune, change your luck and keep you safe! I got suckered in and bought an antique chinese coin which i promptly lost on my way back to Manila. So much for luck!!!

Kawasan Falls - a treasure found

by JEKIE2

The hotel staff recommended that we visit the Kawasan falls. From our resort we took a short tricycle ride and asked our driver to just come back for us in the afternoon. At the entrance, we hired a guide but it's really not necessary because you can pretty much follow the trail to lead you to the falls, however, the guide did come in handy to watch over our stuff while we bask in the cool waters of the falls as well as take our pictures and record a video of us jumping from the rocks. It's approximately a 15-25 minute walk from the entrance to the 1st level of the falls depending on how slow you are or if you stop and admire the surroundings. It's best to wear comfortable shoes since the path is a bit rocky and uneven.AS we got closer to the falls you can hear the cascading waters and the minute we got to the first level it was so refreshing that you just want to jump in.... the water...

Basilica Minore del Santo Nino - Cebu City

by bike_packer

The Basilica Minore del Santo Nino in Cebu City is just a few walks away from Fort San Pedro and Magellan's Cross. It is where the miraculous Santo Nino de Cebu is enshrined - considered as the oldest religious relic in the Philippines. Given By Magellan to Queen Juana in 1521, the statue survived the times and since then Cebuanos have cherished and endeared the image. The country's oldest church, the basilica was built in 1565 by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and Fray de Urdaneta. Rebuilt and restored in due time, the church was finally conferred as Basilica in 1965.
