Have a taste of their Empanada

by IamPam Updated Jul 9, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Empanada is one of Ilocos’ specialties. It is a type of savoury pastry filled with ground beef/pork, shredded cabbage and egg deep fried into golden perfection. There is also a special empanada with Ilocos' local garlicky sausage.

You can grab this delicacy everywhere in Vigan. Pair it with the local vinegar and bagnet for a heartymeal. Personally, I like to enjoy it plain.

by IamPam Written Jul 8, 2013

Hidden Garden in Vigan is a local hulticulturist's haven turned into a park for tourist attraction. They houses several bonsai trees and other flowering plants. They also have a rustic restaurant and souvenier shop. Try their Halo-Halo after walking around.

Look for the golden house at Baluarte

by IamPam Written Jul 8, 2013

Baluarte is the expansive land of Ilocos Sur's reigning political clan The Singsons. The patriarch and the region's ex-governor open this place to serve as a tourist spot and to house his exotic animals.

Chavit, as he was famously known owns tigers, ostriches, deers, peacocks, miniture horses and a lot more. Aside from the animals, you will also see his house at the top of a hill made of golden tinted windows and a huge Bonsai like tree beside it. Expect a lot of people during weekends. Entrance is free.

Baluarte Chavit's house Ostrich Tiger and a Dinosaur? haha!

    Vigan, what else?

by IamPam Updated Jul 8, 2013

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Like what I've said earlier, I've been visiting this place since I was a kid. You'll love the century old houses and the cobble stone road here. Ride the calesa if it's you're first time and experience how the spaniards stroll around this place. When I was a kid, Vigan is much simpler and there were no stores at the old houses, even restaurants were very few. But now, there are souvenier items and antiques being sold here. Restaurants are build like the century houses which is nice because it didn't spoiled the beauty of Vigan

    Burnay-making

    by i-s-a Updated Jan 7, 2009

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Burnay is a local craft of Ilocos.

The picture was taken in Vigan where there are few shops still making those beautiful pots and jars. The locals are very accomodating and even made a jar sample right in front of us.

You may buy your pasalubongs here directly to get a good price and also to help the local community.

    Baluarte

    by Orange_traveller Written May 14, 2008

This is the governor's fortress which was a source of controversy long time ago. When you go here, you will see why. I don't know how a governor can afford such a place! The animals here are well maintained which is good. They have tigers, lions, white deer, ostrich, mini horses to name a few. This is a petting zoo which is great for kids!

    Food Trip

    by Orange_traveller Written May 14, 2008

Aside from museums, ancestral houses and baluarte (governor's fortress), part of the tour of vigan is to try out local delicacies. Try the pipian (ground rice that is their version of aroz caldo but has a different taste to it), tinubong (yummy sweet sticky rice inside bamboo sticks), bagnet (crispy fried pieces of pork), Poqui poqui (mashed eggplant, tomatoes, shrimp paste), fried ilocos empanada which is good with spicy vinegar and try their local wine called basi.

    One day tour in Vigan

    by Orange_traveller Written May 14, 2008

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Upon arrival at Vigan, you can go straight to Calle Crisologo where you will enjoy looking at ancestral houses and antique shops. From here, you may ride the kalesa for about 150 pesos per hour and this will take you anywhere! Just a few meters away from Calle Crisologo is the St Paul Cathedral, UNESCO marker, Plaza Burgos (where you can have their famous fried empanada) and Plaza Salcedo.

    Hidden Garden

    by Orange_traveller Written May 8, 2008

If you love gardening or if you are looking for a place to sip coffee, relax and enjoy a peaceful stroll this is the place to go to. You can buy your plants and bonsai trees here and they have landscaping services as well. They also serve the famous fried Ilocos empanada, good bibingka and other local pica pica foods. I was told that they have a bahay kubo (Filipino national type of house) which you can rent. The place is very inviting and the bonsai trees are really a work of art.
