Miagao Town about 35 kilometers west of Iloilo City is one of the major highlights in going to Iloilo City and Province due to the famous Miagao Church. The Church is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Unique Baroque Churches of the Philippines" in 1993. There are basically three modes of transport in going to miagao from Iloilo City.
1) take a “Miagao” jeepney from Mohon Terminal in Molo District or from the Iloilo Terminal Market (better known as “super”) in Downtown Iloilo. Jeepney Fare is 38 pesos
2) or if you are renting a private van, ask the driver to get you to the Miagao Church and beyond but the price of hiring a private van for a day is 5,000 pesos so if you are 10 in a group, this will be cheap at 500 pesos per head.
3) private car if you have a friend or a relative in iloilo city.
Only in da Pilipins...that's what we say. The jeepneys--we Filipinos invented them after World War 2 converting the the military jeeps into colorful transpo. In Iloilo, we have come up with newer models for the 21st century. They're sleek and streamlined with hoods that are carbon copies of branded cars and vans (take note, these are done by hand, not machines). But the Filipino, the Ilonggo in us always comes out for these jeepneys are still venues for our love for color and festivity. You would also know what is important to the jeepney's owners just by looking at its designs.
You don't have to go to the terminal, just wait in front of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas, city campus (Infante St. in front of Iloilo Doctor's Hospital) for any Miagao jeepney. Fare is 40 pesos for the 40 km. drive to Miagao. Wear a bandana or a cap when you're inside for all the wind will mess up your hair. And yes, don't forget your sunglasses. It can be very hot along the southern coast.
Miagao is only 40 kms. southwest of Iloilo City so it can easily be reached. We took a jeepney from the market terminal in the City; our travel time was about 55 minutes. It is confusing because we were charged P50 from Iloiolo City the first time we went to Miagao. But the second time we went there, we were charged only P45. Maybe the price difference was due to the Dinagyang Festival. There were so many tourists going there from the festival so probably the drivers took advantage of it.
I gathered that there are also buses and airconditioned vans going to Miagao. If you take that, travel time will be only about 40-45 minutes.
If you want something luxurious and cool, a transpo that can take you to and around southern Iloilo at your beck and call, you can just rent from one of several rent-a-car businesses in Iloilo city. They have vans and sedans.
