    Visit San Joaquin Church

by cyndymc Updated Mar 8, 2011
Hubby's Photo of San Joaquin Church Facade
    2 more images

One of the new Ilonggo friends we met at the Dinagyang suggested that we go to San Joaquin. He said it was very near Miagao so we can easily make a side trip and see the famous San Joaquin Church...and so we did ;)

When we reached San Joaquin Church, the main door was closed so we just feasted our eyes on the famous facade which has reportedly enamored the historians, church architecture enthusiasts, photographers and tourists. It is the the only one in the Philippines and the world featuring a unique spread of bas-relief depicting the historic battle between Christians of Spain and Moors of Morocco in Tetuan in 1859. This is quite fascinating, considering that most Catholic churches depict religious icons.

I wondered why such motif was adapted for the façade. I got the answer when I went to the church compound to check if the side door was open, I met the cleaning lady and a parishioner. The parishioner was so gracious to tell me the story about the facade. According to him, the church was still being constructed when the priest, Fr. Tomas Santaren heard about the news regarding Spain’s victory over Morocco at the Battle of Tetuan. He was so ecstatic that he thought of directing the church builders to depict the battle on the façade of the church. (Sorry I forgot to get the name of the elderly parishioner, but if you get to read this, Lolo, thank you very much for this valuable information.)

I gave the bas relief mural a second look. Indeed, it realistically depicted the drama which could have unfolded in the battle. The emotions and expressions of agony as well as victory were impressively rendered by the craftsmen, giving realism to the title "Rendicion de Tetuan" which is carved at the base of the mural.

The cleaning lady let my husband enter the church to take some pictures of the interior. I took a glimpse. It was quite dark, but with the ambient lighting, I noticed the 3 stone retablos. I learned that they were made of carved limestone.
