As mentioned in my Overview of Liliw, the past renovations on St. John The Baptist Church saddened me a bit because it seemed to have lost its beautiful, quaint look. I always looked back at my younger days when the church interior was so beautiful...But in March this year, when we brought some photo buddies, I was very happy to see the fruition of my dream, to have the glorious look of the church's retablos restored. Director Emmanuel "Maning" Borlaza was responsible for the restoration of the antique look, while another prominent Liliw personality,Concepcion Brosas, took care of the fund-raising drives.
Now, the main retablo is a faithful copy of the old account in archives, with 13 statues enshrined in its 4-level gold-leafed niches, with the risen Christ enshrined on top; St. Peter, St. John the Baptist, St. Paul below on the 3rd level; St. Vincent Ferrer, St. Roque, St. Francis of Assissi, St. Claire, and St. Anthony de Padua on the 2nd level; and at the bottom the four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The tabernacle in the center is framed in beaten gold, as conceived by Director Maning. There are two smaller retablos with the same design on both sides, with the statues of St. Joseph, St. Joaquin, Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Anne and the child Mary, St. Lorenzo Ruiz, St. Therese of the Little Flower, St. Isidro Labrador and St. John Vianney. Also renovated were the altar table, lectern, and candle holders along the sides of the church.
As a photographer focusing on old heritage churches, my favorite church remains to be the Liliw Church. See my travelogue for more pictures of St. John The Baptist Church.

Liliw, Laguna is heaven on earth--for shoe lovers, that is. It is known for its 'tsinelas' (slipper/slides) industry. Gat Tayaw is a street lined with retail shoe stores selling very cheap but nice slides and shoes. Any woman will fall in love with Gat Tayaw!
They sell ladies's, men's and childrens slides and shoes. They also sell bags.
My favorite stores? Entrada, Banhai, Jeff-c's, Patty's (just off Gat Tayaw) and the block near the Church. They sell some designs exclusive to their shops.
It's a 2 to 3 hour drive from Manila. You take the SLEX and exit at Batangas. Proceed to Sto. Tomas, towards San Pablo City. You will pass by Alaminos on your way to San Pablo. From San Pablo, proceed to Rizal, then to Nagcarlan and finally to Liliw. Majayjay is the next town after Liliw.
this town is the shoe and slipper capital of the province so what else would you do than to buy shoes and slippers right!
Pass by the Liliw Church after shoe shopping or taking at dip at one of Liliw's resorts.
Picture-taking tip: Best done in the afternoon. The Church faces West.
