Mangyan

Mangyan tribe is the ancestor of Mindoro Occidental, easily seen in Mindoro Occidental and still very primitive. You recognize them easily, the most common region is Abra de Ilog just after the pier, there are plenty of their houses there. And on the way to Sablayan, they may ride on top of the bus, wearing real short short and carrying their handicraft to trade in the town. Both men and women chew betel nuts and carry a knife by the waist.There are say that the Mangyan became very dependent to the outsider particularly the missionary after they start to have contact with the tribe. Also, the Mangyan do not like their picture to be taken. As from past experience, politician or some organizations did use their photo to collect funds but the fund ended up did not benefits the Mangyan. Mt. Iglit

Mt. Iglit is at Calintaan, not Sablayan (which I remember incorrectly). But the nearest 'bigger' town is Sablayan. You really need a local to bring you there or organize a trip with the Eco-tourism Office. The Eco-tourism Office in Sablayan is 3 minutes walk from the bus terminal. There are plenty of Mangyan staying near the mountain and Tamaraw still wandering freely in the national park. Some of the Mangyan are still with top uncovered.

Sablayan is a small town between Mamburao and San Jose, you dont find much here as well. There is a local market call Sablayan Mall, it is not a mall but a wet market. From there you can go across the bridge to the villages behind. It is near the seaside. The sand is dark brown in color.

My first impression of San Jose is dirty, noisy, chaotic and dusty. The road to San Jose is not well paved/ not all paved and thus it is really dusty. Plus the day when I reached there has electricity shut down for the whole day, all shops are using their own generator.. It was really noisy.

Abra de Ilog

To get to Mindoro Occidental, travel by boat from Batangas to Abra de Ilog. It takes around 2.5 hours and costs 208P for Montenegro Liner.From Abra de Ilog pier, hop on the jeepney and go to Mamburao directly, it costs 50P and takes approximately an hour. You starts to see Mangyan along the way to Mamburao.Mangyan are the ancestor of Mindoro Occidental people and they are still very primitive even until today.

Mamburao is a fishing village after Abra de Ilog. It is an hour away from Abra de Ilog and 3 hrs away from Sablayan.It is a good idea to stay overnight at Mamburao if the day has turned dark. You can get some beaches at Mamburao as well.Mamburao is the capitol of Mindoro Occidental but the airport located at San Jose. The town itself is smaller than San Jose, and also the pollution is not as bad as San Jose.

Tamaraw

Other than Mangyan, Tamaraw is the attraction in Mt. Iglit as well. This special kind of endangered buffalo found no where else but at the Mindoro Occidental.
