Apo Island Things to Do

  • Apo Island Marine Sanctuary

One of the nicest things about the island is the protected Marine Sanctuary they have established here. The coral and marine life in the sanctuary is flourishing, you can certainly see the difference between the protected area and the rest of the underwater sites....

  • Hiking...

There are a couple of hiking trails to be explored here. (the island is small so nothing very challenging at all...) One trail leads up to the light house on the highest point on the island. Another one starts down by the sanctuary and leads out to a nice vista where you can see the Apo Island harbor with a volcano on Negros as a back drop....

  • Night Diving

Like many of the places that I have been in the PI, the night diving here is first rate. And, quite accessible, you just have to wade into the water right from the beach right in front of the lodge. Nice array or things to find here, which include Mandarin fish, crocodile fish, and sleeping sea turtles....

  • San Miguels by the Sea...

Sunset takes on a bit different meaning here, as there is limited electricity on the island. (soon you will likely be enjoying your San Miguel by candle light or in the dark.... :o)) Thats OK, early evenings and all, I came here to relax and dive, not for the night life........

  • A lovely place to relax.

Let's clarify one thing right away, Apo Island is not big. It is reduced in size currently (June 2012) for the visitor as the path up to the lighthouse is closed currently post the Sendang typhoon.Unless you visit as part of a dive / snorkelling package in which case you will be put ashore, given a meal and then back out doing your thing. If, like...

  • Simple pleasures.

I know it might seem almoat redundant to write a tip about something so seemingly obvious as going for a swim when you are visiting a tropical island is beautiful sunshine but that is what I am going to do here and for a couple of specific reasons which I'll get to shortly. As I mentioned in my Apo Island introductory page Apo and it's surrounding...

  • Sun bathing / Read a book

If you grow tired of underwater adventures like diving and snorkeling, the resort got very inviting lounge chair outside, and inside the recreation area. Sunbath all day and no frisky vendors that will disturb you. Great way to get a perfect tan. The resort got international books to choose from, mostly German books, reading a book is another thing...

  • Visit the Clownfish District

Apo Island is known on having a clownfish city, hundreds of clownfish on soft corals. It is one of the pleasant treat to divers and snorklers in the marine sanctuary.. Its truly amazing to see.The photo here is an example of one of the clownfish district on shallow portion of the sanctuary..

At Liberty's Guesthouse you'll also find Liberty's restaurant. The meals are big and good and the view is spectactular. Since this is a very small place you have to choose your dinner from on of (normally) 3 options, but usually my problem was that I wnated all of them ;o)
If you want to try to eat somewhere else you have very few options... You can go to the only other resort on the island or you can arrange to eat with some of the locals in the village.

Favorite Dish: Adobo beef with green beans is still fresh in my memory (mmmm... ;o)

Wise words on the wall at Liberty's

Apo Island Nightlife

Apo Island is a very small place... You could try the Saturday night disco in the village. But don't show up until the kids have gone to sleep - unless you want to experience the noise and activity level of a kindergarten ;o)
Besides this you should accept some quiet evenings talking with other divers and have a few beers and go to bed early. One night the electricity was turned off at 21:10!

Apo Island Transportation

  • You have only one choice.

Unless you are on a dive boat or using resort transport (both expensive) you have only one way of getting to or from Apo and that is by boat from a pace called Malatapay which is marginally North of Zamboanguita on Highway South. If you are coming from Dumaguete, whch is likely, you will pass Bacong and Dauin then look for a decent sized sign...

  • (Dumaguete) Malatapay to Apo Island

Small Bancas (boats) leave from Malatapay (market on wednesday, more boats). Be prepared to get quite wet!Jeepney stand from Dumaguete is south of the city, 200m past Banica river.

  • A very small banca!

I would suggest that you arrange transportation to the Island directly with Paul and Liberty. They can give you the details and book one of the 5-6 passenger "seats" on the banca (boat). And prepare to get wet! the banca is very small and the water is usually i bit rough because of wind and current. The sea is least 'aggressive' in the morning.

Apo Island Warnings and Dangers

  • Mozzie About

Since the lodge is pretty much open air, mosquitos can have the run of the place. They didnt see so bad while I was there, but I did notice that the rooms all had their mosquito nets deployed. I enjoyed staying at the Liberty Lodge, but its simple accomodations, so things like AC and hot water and all will not be at your beckon call...... :o))

  • Conserve Water

One problem that you might face is water shortage. Water is very precious in Apo Island. The water for drinking and cooking are all being bought from the town of Zamboangita , 35 minutes by boat. For showers, or washing of clothes, water is from the deep well at the center of the island.. But at the resort, 2 water container is allotted per room.....
