BOOK EARLY FOR TRIPS TO CALAUIT
When we were in Coron we wanted to take the day trip to Calauit Island but there were not enough people who were interested in taking the tour on that particular day so we left our names and cell number with the tour agency so they could call us if there were enough people for the next day. Unfortunately they did call us wondering if we would like to go the day after as there was enough room for us, but we were flying out that day so we were unable to sign up.
My advice would be to register with a few tour agencies the day you arrive in Coron to stand a better chance of making the trip.
MAP OF CORON ISLAND
When your boat anchors at Coron Island so the tourists can see Kayangan Lake there is a marvelous map giving details of burial grounds, reefs, sanctuaries, beaches, lakes, hunting grounds, protected forests. The island has been given to the local Tagbanua people and tourists may enter certain parts of the island only.
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU ENTER THE CORON BISTRO
The sign says it all--- you will be bitten, accused of trespassing or being cruel to dogs.
The owner is French and is very humorous, but enter at your own risk. Believe me it is worth it as the food is good.
CAREFUL OF THE SHARP ROCKS AT THE HOT SPRINGS
Should you visit Maquinit Hot Springs be very careful if you are scrambling over the rocks as some are extremely sharp and can easily slice you leg or arm open if you slip. I actually cut my leg when i lost my balance while trying to grab my towel which was lying on the rocks.
RELIEVE YOURSELF BEFORE CLIMBING MOUNT TAPYAS
It is 730 steps to the top of Mount Tapyas and takes 30-60 minutes depending how fit you are, but make sure that you perform your "morning constitutional" before you start climbing because the toilets that are about one third of the way up are completely destroyed. I needed to use them but the toilet bowls were completely broken, no water, debris, and there was sh*t everywhere among the ruined toilets, even wooden 2X3s to prevent you from entering. The area each side of the steps is clear and devoid of trees which makes it impossible to relieve oneself.
CLIMBING MOUNT TAPYAS
The best time to climb Mt Tapyas is before dawn, perhaps at 5 am or late afternoon, maybe around 6 pm. Be aware that there are over 730 steps and if you are elderly or have a medical condition you should think twice about doing this. I am a fairly active 60+yr old who can jog 4 kms each day but i did have to stop for a few breathers on the way up. I actually started the climb at 7 am and most of the people were already descending. There are rest huts on the way up but many of them have no roof due to the typhoon Yolanda that caused so much destruction. I would bring water as there is nowhere tp buy water on the climb.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH FUEL
If you rent a motorbike be warned that outside Coron there are no petrol stations, only a few stores that sell fuel in 1 liter coke bottles, so fill up before you leave or you may find yourself pushing the bike for a few kms.
SHELLS-YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!
Please don't try to take shells off of the island as they will be confiscated at the airport. All bags are thoroughly searched for these rare shells and if caught you may receive a fine , anything from 10,000 to 1,000,000 pesos and a jail sentence of 6-12 years. At the airport you can see a list of rare shells and a box containing all the confiscated shells. Philippines is one of the countries that has a large amount of rare shells so collectors and souvenir hunters, BE WARNED
THE ROAD TO THE HOT SPRINGS
If you rent a motorbike to visit the hot springs which are 5 kms east of the town be very careful because there is a sheer drop at the side of the narrow road and you may end up lying in someone's backyard, especially if vehicles are coming from the other direction in the middle of the road. I talked to a few of the locals and many drunken motorbike and trike drivers have ended up going over the edge.
DON't CHOOSE ACCOMMODATION NEXT TO ROOSTERS
Just check the neighbourhood out before you choose your hotel and make sure that there are no roosters in the area because if you are not used to them you will be kept awake with the cocka-doodle -doo in the early hours of the morning.
Filipinos love cock fights and many of the locals have a 100 roosters or more on their property. You can see the small houses that they keep their fighting cocks in when walking around the town
Be careful while walking around as the whole of the seafront in Coron is full of rubbish and is impossible to swim in town. Many of the houses built on stilts the sewage goes directly in to the sea. Some places you must hold your nose while walking around.
WEAR LONG TROUSERS ON MOTORBIKE
There are some nasty bugs in the Philippines and while motorbiking around the island i felt a sudden pain in my groin, and before i could stop my bike i felt another sharp pain.No time for modesty, i stopped the motorbike and took off my shorts and shook them around to find nothing, but on my groin there was a deep red mark which developed into a one inch blister after 30 minutes. By the time i returned to the GH at night the center of the bite/sting had turned whitish/yellow with the build up of puss and it was swollen all around the area, perhaps 3 inches in circumference. Fortunately over the next few days it slowly got better, but even now , 10 days later there is still a white mark on my skin. So i advise you to wear long pants while riding a bike which should prevent incidents like this from happening.
I might add that i have bee bitten by different types of bee, ants, centipedes but never experienced this before , and don't know who is the culprit!
WEAR A HELMET or FACE A FINE
In Coron Town i noticed that very few people wear a helmet while riding their motorbikes, but sometimes the police are on the outskirts of town stopping riders without helmets. I believe that the fine for this is around 400 pesos so when renting a bike ask for a helmet. All motor bike rental agencies have helmets for the tourists.
MAKE SURE THAT YOUR DRINKS ARE COLD
We went on a day trip from Coron by boat which included lunch but unfortunately when it came time to eat the coke and water was at normal air temperature as there was no cooler with ice, so make sure when booking your day trip that cold drinks will be available.
going to Kayangan Lake from the boat walking to the shore... then I felt a little itchy just above my ankle and when I look at it it thought it was just a string and when I get to the shore it was hurting already and then they recognized the "string" was from jellyfish....to make the story short I still have the scar look alike anklet string after 6 months :(.....so be careful of those.. watch where you are walking
