DON't CHOOSE ACCOMMODATION NEXT TO ROOSTERS

by davidjo Written Jun 12, 2014
    many roosters live here

Just check the neighbourhood out before you choose your hotel and make sure that there are no roosters in the area because if you are not used to them you will be kept awake with the cocka-doodle -doo in the early hours of the morning.
Filipinos love cock fights and many of the locals have a 100 roosters or more on their property. You can see the small houses that they keep their fighting cocks in when walking around the town

THE ROAD TO THE HOT SPRINGS

    don't drop in someone's backyard
    1 more image

If you rent a motorbike to visit the hot springs which are 5 kms east of the town be very careful because there is a sheer drop at the side of the narrow road and you may end up lying in someone's backyard, especially if vehicles are coming from the other direction in the middle of the road. I talked to a few of the locals and many drunken motorbike and trike drivers have ended up going over the edge.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH FUEL

by davidjo Written Jun 14, 2014
3 or 4 gas stations in town and that's about it!!!

If you rent a motorbike be warned that outside Coron there are no petrol stations, only a few stores that sell fuel in 1 liter coke bottles, so fill up before you leave or you may find yourself pushing the bike for a few kms.

    CLIMBING MOUNT TAPYAS

by davidjo Written Jun 21, 2014
make sure that you are up to the steep climb
    3 more images

The best time to climb Mt Tapyas is before dawn, perhaps at 5 am or late afternoon, maybe around 6 pm. Be aware that there are over 730 steps and if you are elderly or have a medical condition you should think twice about doing this. I am a fairly active 60+yr old who can jog 4 kms each day but i did have to stop for a few breathers on the way up. I actually started the climb at 7 am and most of the people were already descending. There are rest huts on the way up but many of them have no roof due to the typhoon Yolanda that caused so much destruction. I would bring water as there is nowhere tp buy water on the climb.

Should you visit Maquinit Hot Springs be very careful if you are scrambling over the rocks as some are extremely sharp and can easily slice you leg or arm open if you slip. I actually cut my leg when i lost my balance while trying to grab my towel which was lying on the rocks.

BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU ENTER THE CORON BISTRO

by davidjo Written Jun 22, 2014

The sign says it all--- you will be bitten, accused of trespassing or being cruel to dogs.
The owner is French and is very humorous, but enter at your own risk. Believe me it is worth it as the food is good.

    MAP OF CORON ISLAND

by davidjo Written Jun 22, 2014

When your boat anchors at Coron Island so the tourists can see Kayangan Lake there is a marvelous map giving details of burial grounds, reefs, sanctuaries, beaches, lakes, hunting grounds, protected forests. The island has been given to the local Tagbanua people and tourists may enter certain parts of the island only.
