The poor live in smaller homes

by jvsabas

The poor live in the traditional Nipa Hut homes. Some still have the old tatched roofs, although most now use corrugated tin.The houses are small and usually raised up on stilts in antipation of the frequent flooding this region gets during the rainy season.

The affluent

by jvsabas

All along the fisheries, I would see the homes of the well off. They lived in large western style homes, brightly painted, often with very nicely manicured gardens, and late model cars in the carport.

Some of the roads are narrow.

by jvsabas

The jeepney took us away from the main roads and on to the narrow roads that led to the small Barrios or villages that dot the province. There was a lot of commerce going on, with the locals selling goods and services to each other.

"Fish Pond" Tour

by jvsabas

I hired a jeepney to take my mother, my daughter and I along the backroads of Dagupan, Binmaley, and Lingayen. We were able to see how the local people actually lived. It was surprising to see the number of affluent homes in the area. The large homes contrasted with the older nipa hut homes of the poor.

We started on the main road...

by jvsabas

We started in Binamaley, traveling towards Dagupan on the main highway that parallels the coast.

Most live comfortably

by jvsabas

Relative to much of the Philippines, I saw a lot of wealth in Pangasinan. These two adjoining homes seemed typical (in size and build) of what I saw, except that they had a private car in the yard.
