  • Whale shark interaction

by icoy Updated Apr 4, 2011

Swimming with the whale sharks! The greatest experience ever. The sharks are so big that seeing them up close could be overwhelming. Good thing is that they are very gentle that you can swim with it and as long as you don't make a lot of noise you can swim with it for a long period.

First, go to the Information area to register. Fee for the boat, boatman, spotter and Butanding Interaction Officer (BIO) is Php 3500 max of 7 pax. There is also a registration fee of Php 100 per person.

Snorkeling gear, face mask and fins are also available for rent, Php 300 for the whole set.

Go swimming with Whale Sharks is a must

    by OH_DK Updated May 6, 2009

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you're in Donsol you really have to go swimming with these fantastic, giant, peaceful fish - it was an experience that I'll never forget.
We were a group of 3 French, 2 English, 1 Filippino (Barbie) and I (OH_DK)
Shortly after we went out on the sea we were ready with finns and mask, and on the signal we jumped in the water and soon saw our first Butanding (whale shark).
During this morning I think we jumped in the water about 12 times, and saw about 10 whale sharks. Somtimes they were on their way up - then we followed them a long time, but if they were about to dive they disapeared quickly.

Watch fire flies after it gets dark

    by OH_DK Updated May 2, 2009

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The day we arrived we booked us to a fireflie trip in a little boat. Barbie booked (I think at "Vitton" hotel reception).
After dark 6:30 pm a guide came and picked us up and we went on her motor bike 1km. to Donsol town and a river where a little boat was waiting for us.
We sailed down the river a while and suddelly we saw a tree at the river brink that looked like a Christmas tree with a lot of flashing lights around - very impressive.
If you want to know more read about fireflies here in Wikipedia.

This is a thing NOT to be miss in you Sorsogon tour. Butandings can be seen only in tropical and warm temperate areas. Be at tourism office around 630am. Cost of tour is P3500, maximum 7 person/boat. Watch the video prepared by the tourism office and then off you go to the sea. Swim and enjoy the Butandings but be cautious not to disturb their natural life.

  • Firefly watching

by icoy Written Apr 12, 2009

Firefly watching in the mangrove area is like going through a magical river. These fireflies live in the trees lining the river and at night they are spectacular!

Boat ride including the boatman and guide costs P1250 max of 7 pax. It can be arranged in the Visitors Center but in our case we had the resort (Amor Beach Farm) arrange it for us.

    Butanding Interaction

    by monina_c Updated Mar 23, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Swimming with the whalesharks aka. Butanding Interaction is a MUST do if you are in the Philippines between February and May or October -November.

Once in Donsol, visitors must register with the Donsol Tourism Office located adjacent to Vitton Resort, Donsol, Sorsogon for the activity. If your group is small or you are alone and budget is a concern, just tell the tourism officer that you are interested in hooking up with others and they will try and help you get someone to share the cost of the boat with you.

Each boat (cost of rental: P3,500/boat or US$72) can accommodate up to 7 persons. They do not allow the use of SCUBA equipment during the encounter but they do have a shack where you can rent snorkel equipment for P300/set (mask, snorkel and fins). They also require a P100/pax conservation fee.

    DESIGNATE AN UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHER

by mavl Updated Mar 20, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

before each swim with the whalesharks (you'll have several during your stint on the boat if you go well within the season), it's best to select an underwater photographer to record the priceless moments you're sure to have.

everytime the spotter sees one, a small number of you (maybe 3 at a time) will dive into the water and swim toward the whaleshark. it's best to have another member of your group to accompany you for the sole purpose of taking photos and videos. if you're in the water to see one, you're surely going to be too preoccupied (and shocked by their sheer size) to fiddle with your camera.

for every dive, a different person can be in charge of taking photos and videos to ensure that everyone gets a chance to experience these beautiful creatures without any distractions.

(this will also help in getting great surface group photos while waiting for the next one to swim along)

    Help save the Butandings!

by jeryk Updated May 29, 2008

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you have spare cash, it would nice to donate to help in the preservation of Donsol, home of the whale sharks. I also think that the funds go to further research about whale sharks. So if you have spare cash, why not donate some. I believe that this will help not only the lives of the locals but also in the research about the whale sharks. Here in the Philippines, research such as those in Donsol remains to be underrated and low in funds. :)

There's a donation box at the tourism office. :)

    Firefly River Cruise

by jeryk Updated May 29, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

At night time, you might want to do a river cruise at the Ogud river to see some fireflies. The boat goes at around 6:30PM and it will take you on a 2 hour cruise along the river.

The trees along the river are filled with fireflies much like christmas lights on a christmas tree. But when we went, it was full moon so the fireflies were not as visible. Our guide has to shake the trees for the fireflies to come out.

This is a best way to relax and savor nature. Also, there few to no mosquitoes at the cruise so it can be safe.

The boat costs P1250 and can fit 5-6 people. You can sign-up at the tourism office (where you go signup for the whale shark encounter).

    Visit the Tourism Office!

by jeryk Updated May 29, 2008

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Remember to drop by the tourism office first to sign-up for the whale shark watching. The staff
there are very nice, they can even help you find a place to stay. Look for Ms. Cecille (tourism staff). She's very very nice. She even helped us find a place to stay! If you want her contact number, let me know. :)

Boats go for P3500 for a max of 7 people (P500 each). If you are a lone backpacker, I suggest that you ask the staff to let you join other groups so as to minimize cost. We were able to maximize the 7 boat capacity by going with 3 ladies from Manila and a Brit backpacker. If you want, you can also talk with the people at your hotel so that you can join them. I know they'll be more than glad to split cost.

There's also a registration of P100 for locals and P300 for foreigners. I don't why they are charging foreigners more but I think it's a negative practice since it kinda discourages foreign tourists a little.

You can also rent snorkels for P150 and fins for also P150. Fins and snorkels are well recommended gears.

There are also souvenirs items there where I think a share of the profit goes into helping the preservation of this sanctuary.

Also, you can read up on some information about the whale sharks at the office.

Ride on top of the jeep

by jeryk Written May 28, 2008

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

On your way back to Legaspi from Donsol, you might want to experience riding on top of a jeepney. Jeepney fares cost around P40-P50 which is a little cheaper than the van. The ride offers the best view of the road which passes by ricefields, small cottages and as you come nearer Legaspi, a spectacular view of the Mayon Volcano.

Just remember to wear sunscreen before since you'll be under the sun for 1-2 hours.

Also, hold a good grip on the handles of the jeep as there are a few sharp turns along the way.
