  • Stalling along the beach

Scattered along the shore are various stalls selling grilled food, from pork to fish to chicken. Even chicken intestines, feet, head, and other body parts (yuck!).Tables and chairs or benches are set up for the diners. The practice here is, you get as much "puso" and barbecue sticks you can eat from the stall. When payment time comes, the vendor...

  • Anything But The Feathers

There is really no world class restaurant to speak of in this town but you have to try the local food. At night, just before dinner time (typically about 7pm), if you go to the reclamation area, there are a lot of barbecue stands where you can order any part of a chicken or pork, except the feathers and fur! From Chicken heads on a stick to chicken...

Maasin Transportation

  • Cebu/Maasin Ferry

Philippines is equal to ferrys and going btw the islands is pretty easy and cheap.Several ferry lines travels from Cebu and Southern Leyte and the easiest port to access is Maasin. (the other two being Batu and Hilongos) Prices are similar but since you most likely going to Maasin the extra travel time in Jeepneys is well worth the extra...

  • Transportation to Maasin.

Getting to maasin is easy from Manila. From the international terminal, you get on a (Cebu Pacific) shuttle bus to the domestic terminal. Cebu Pacific Airlines, is the best way to get to the Leyte, Province ( 100 dollars for round trip). From Tacloban , Leyte you need to take either a private taxi ( 60-80 dollars U.S.) or to the bus terminal (1...

  • Plan Ahead!

If you're going there, Chances are you're coming from a different city as there are no direct flights to the town. You can either take ferries from Cebu to Maasin or the neighboring towns or a flight from Manila to Tacloban and then a 4 hour drive from there. The ferries from Cebu are never frequent, and only a few times a week if you're planning...

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you're in Maasin, and your a Caucasian male, don't be surprised to be called Joe. I have no idea where this came from but ever since I was a kid, people have always called white men Joe. maybe from G.I. Joe? Maybe the first ever white settler was called Joe? Don't ask me!
No, sorry. Girls are never called Jane, Jill or any common name. Well, maybe "the Amerikana".

Maasin Off The Beaten Path

  • There Really Is No Beaten Path Here

Being such a small town, not popular to tourists yet even though there are excellent SCUBA sites in the vicinity, there is really no such thing as a "Beaten Path" here. So you need an insider to show you around. Most of the things to do around here revolve around the beaches: SCUBA diving is getting popular, there are tons of private beaches,...

  • Mama Mary

On the hillside above Maasin, there is a monument for "Mama Mary" (Maasin is mainly Catholic) . It is a very nice walk to the top, but once you get there you will love the veiw. You can see all if Maasin. Mama Marry was in the process of getting new paint when I was there(6/17 to 6/22/06),but I could see beyond the scaffolding. It was Beautiful.

  • Panorama Of the Whole Town

Take a tricycle (the usual mode of transportation here) to the Provincial Hospital and ask someone how you can go up to the statue of the Virgin Mary behind it. It's about a 15 minute steep walk up the hill but you will be rewarded with an unobstructed view of the town from there. Go there early in the morning before the sun gets too hot.The main...
