Non-aerosol Mosquito Repellent, etc.
  • Tip Rating:
  • A waterproof backpack is better when you go to the Underground River. it is easier to maneuver during boat transfers and inside the caves.

Stick to the basics. shorts, tank tops and swimsuits. but remember to bring some decent clothes for special dinner and for visiting churches, etc.

Bring strong sunscreen and some basic medicines as there is hardly any 24-hrs drugstore. Rest of toiletries you can get in any supermarket.

Bring a zip-loc bag for your camera equipment if you are taking the trip this rainy season. Eventhought Palawan has the mildest weather sometimes it rains in the afternoon. So better be safe than sorry! :)

BTW, bring an underwater camera with you! A lot of underwater photo opportunities, esp. at Honda Bay. If you don't own one, you can get a cheap Kodak disposable for P499 at any Kodak shop, it works just fine. The "supermarket" at Snake Island, Honda Bay carries some but it is priced almost double the regular.

Pack your non-aerosol OFF lotion because they no longer let you take aerosol cans in the planes.

    OFF is it!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Since Malaria is highly associated with Palawan, it is best to bring enough supply of OFF mosquito repellant lotion.

Both Globe and Smart have cell sites within the city. However Smart has a stronger signal and based on my experience, Globe had fluctuating signal the whole day of my arrival.

    Watch your skin!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bring small tote bags or light backpacks preferably those that do not easily get wet. Not that although slim, your bag still has a chance of diving into the waters esp if you are clumsy! At times you'll also approach or carry it while soaking wet. Plus at times there could be some exciting splashes from the sea as your boat cruises!

Avoid bringing things inside plastic grocery bags - esp the white-colored ones! See the warnings and dangers section.

For the city tour, wear light walking-gear and sneakers or flat rubber shoes/walking shoes. You might not be comfy entering the church in shorts and/or sandals. But you won't be driven away if you did so anyway. Just don't wear sandos for people will look at you sternly - esp if you were female.

Elsewhere (underground cave or honda bay), forget about shoes or sneakers unless those are beach shoes. Sandals are best esp those that have straps. Swim wear (better wear them on the way). And don't pretend you won't take a dip cuz I assure you, YOU WILL!

Towels and change of clothes. You will re-ride the van later, remember?!

Sun block - a lot of it! Anti-insect lotion (Off?) cuz there are a lot of little flies that bite at Pandan Island and one other island.

Mosquitoes and related insects may also be following you at or near the underground river. Ditto at the butterfly farm, the forest at the crocodile farm, or the rice paddies at the penal colony!

Just pack them in their original casings, it will be just fine. But you might want to bring underwater cameras for the fish-feeding frenzy! No need for tripods inside the underground river. It won't have a place there anyway as you'll be sitting still on the little boat - unless you want to tip it over in the darkness of the river with snakes hehe. Don't forget flashbulbs if your camera does not have one already attached to it.

Bring flippers and snorkels so you don't have to rent during the Honda Bay Tour. My companions prefer wearing caps during the tours - i don't. But while in the underground river tour, expect some drippings from above - it is a cave afterall. When a droplet feels cold, that surely is freshwater from the cave's roofs and crevices. When a droplet feels warm - that means a bat has just opted to pee right above you! Oh I said drippings... but I was told it can actually be "droppings" at times cuz the bats can do it anytime anywhere, and there are a lot of little birds (swallows? swifts? am not sure!) inside the cave.

These occassional drips (warm or cold) could land in your cam, so take extra caution.

Bread. Yes, BREAD literally. For the fish-feeding (not for you). Oh, if you courteously asked for it, your hotel will give you some (am sure of that). Just tell them bread for the fish-feeding so they can even give you stale, left-over or old bread. But that's not enough! There are little stores along the way and at the wharf that sell all kinds of breads (edible) for only P10 a pack. If you're not afraid at interacting with a lot of fish, bring a lot of them breads - plus you can use them if you suddenly feel hungry!

Bottled water to quench you (if your tour-guide won't bring them or you think it won't be enough). They're a bit more expensive at Sabang (jump-off point to the underground river) or at the departure area to Honda Bay.

Spare money for little incidentals like if you happened to crave for anything sold along the way or you suddenly thought you want to rent scuba gear and so on. But don't bring all of your millions in your wallet.

    Mosquito Repellent and Sunblock!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wear the lightest you have. It's quite hot here.

Don't forget your mosquito repellent and sunblock! The place has plenty of mosquitos and malaria is a danger. Sunblock is essential if you're going swimming because you'll end up getting toasted :)

Bring an underwater camera! It will be a shame not to take great photos of the corals in Honda Bay! And there are a lot of boat rides so your camera should be water protected.
