In response to VTer's question on men's clothing in Manila (Philippine Forum):

Yes, clothes are very cheap in Manila (for custom-made)and you can also have these custom-made suits done fast if you ask some tailoring shops...generally about $100-175 regularly. I know in Hong Kong, they just make the suit in just a few days (less than 3 days?) and prices are so affordable. The Filipino tailors are likewise very fast and skilled, but sometimes they have too many orders. If you have Filipino friends who can guide you in the streets of Manila (along Espanya and Escolta), there are reputable tailoring shops like "King Arthur" (if I remember right, that is the name of one of those tailor shops)- but those may be difficult to find for foreigners (unless you have a local friend). If you have 2-3 weeks in Manila, that will be sufficient time to have a custom-made suit if you do shop for a tailor in your first few days...You choose the textile and style...

When I went to visit in 2006, I went to the Glorietta Mall in Makati and found a shop called "MERGER" which sold ready-made-suits which are fashionably "trendy" and they adjusted the suit to fit me (using "alteration shops" within the mall), and delivered them straight to my hotel room at Oakwood Hotel. I bought two suits -- one with a "chinese collar" (where you don't need a tie) and another regular suit with nice buttons. Both suits cost me less than $250 total ($125 each with matching belt!). They do get orders from the USA and say they usually send orders by mail to "balikbayans" (Filipinos who live abroad and visiting Philippines).
There are also several individual fashion designers with shops but their prices may be higher, but the quality very good but may be too fashion-forward. Conservative smaller tailoring stores may be more attuned to the conservative tastes of US citizens. You can even bring a suit (maybe a picture of Obama's suits which are well-tailored) and they will copy the style for you.

For really "expensive suits" (matching more of the European style), here's some stores:
Hugo Boss Level 3, Shagri-La Plaza Mall edsa corner Shaw Blvd, Mandaluyong City Tel (632) 633 8801
Armani Exchange can be found at Shangri-La Plaza Mall, Alabang Town center, Power Plant Mall and Glorietta IV
Springfield at Greenbelt-3, Rustan's Makati, SM Megamall, Robinson's Place Manila, Bonifdacio High Stree, Power Plant mall, Rockwell Center

There is a SHOPFEST Philippines 2008 for "Suits on a budget" at specialty shops in SM Megamalls, Robinson malls, Ayala Malls, Crossings, Duty Free Rustan's, Greenhills Shopping Center, MegaWorld Eastwood, Araneta Malls, Ever Gotesco and Tiendesitas

    Enjoy your stay in Manila!

    Custom-made suits, European style suits

$100-175, but much much higher for name brands like Hugo Boss

Sari Sari store or similar local shop: First and most important
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are many Sari Sari stores everywhere. They are just little local shops selling a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Very useful places and humongously cheap.

    First things first.

Number one priority is a pair of tsinelas, slippers, flip-flops, thongs. Whatever you want to call 'em, they are the shoe du jour when you get to the sun. Even in the city if you are a slob like me.

I recommend Dragon Brand, in a natty porcelein blue with natural rubber straps. Once worn in past the painful blister stage, they are like a second skin and unbeatable.

A few hundred pairs of these'll probably match the price you paid for those reefs or whatever. Pennies.

All of the popular beaches: Shellcrafts
  • Tip Rating:
  • At almost all of the popular beaches there will be a stand similar to the one in the picture selling all kinds of items made from shells and other sea life. Hanging baskets are quite popular. Also the jewelry can be had for good prices. You will have to bargain most of the time if you are a tourist. Actually you will have to bargain if your a local too! The vendors are trying to earn a living so they will charge you whatever they think you are willing to pay. A couple of words of caution. Many of the shells being used for the items might be banned in your home country. I found this out 3 years ago I was bringing some small shells through customs they were taken from me as they were on the "Banned" list. I had now idea!! Also I saw a women given a big fine in the Manila Airport trying to export a big Helmut Shell. She was a balikbayan returning to the states and she was pleading and crying but it didn't work!! So if you want to bring shells out it might be wise to check at the airport customs for the list that is ok for import / export.

    Shawarma - a budget traveller's friend

Something from our Arab friends. Shawarma is a middle east type food adapted to the Filipino taste and made popular by an enterprising contract worker from Saudi Arabia. He thought it a great idea to set up a stand offering these affordable, filling and tasty treats on the streets. From its first appearance at Rustan's grocery store in Makati, Shawarma's popularity is attested to by the mushrooming shawarma stands in every city.

Shawarma is made from the unleavened bread type thing. Fillings may either be grilled beef or chicken... sometimes turkey. I prefer chicken as it doesn't grease so much once it gets cold. Veggies in it are tomatoes, onions, and lettuce or cabbage. What makes it special is the sauce. Choose between hot orange sauce or creamy white onion and garlic sauce. I prefer making it swim in all the creamery goodness of the white sauce. If you want more of it, either ask more from the sellers or look for the plastic bottles containing the sauce on the stand which they allow customers to use.

Picture shows tindero (seller) about to cut slivers of meat from beef stump. Eating shawarma is messy. That is why most often, each shawarma is wrapped in its own plastic. Dont take it out but use the plastic to catch the dripping sauce as each "sandwich" inevitably would get soppy wet from the sauce. And just bite from the top taking care to bend down.... and avoiding drips on your shirt. A good pose would be to extend your butt out thereby ensuring your shoes wont get stains as well. Passers by would say... ah.... probably eating shawarma even before they see you with shawarma on your hands.

Please throw wrappings in proper wastebaskets as they now fine people for littering. Old custom is to throw in streets. hehe. kidding.

Shawarma is most popular with students because it provides a filling meal on a small budget. Costs between P20-30 pesos. less than a dollar. Some fancy places may offer it at P50 (1 dollar) but considering how filling it is.... it is still an affordable breakfast / lunch / merienda / or even dinner.

in sari-sari stores everywhere and groceries: Chocnut
  • Tip Rating:
  • Chocnut is the official chocolate of the Philippines. (kidding!) although it comes close to it.

As the name suggests, it is a combination peanut and chocolate candy. Very cheap.. if you are able to finish a dollar's worth of this candy, you'd probably have diabetes by then. Strange, on closer inspection, it is really inferior to the imported candies but open one when you have "balikbayans" expats visiting the Philippines and the scramble would be for chocnut despite the abundance of other imported chocolates.

Mention chocnut to filipino friends living abroad and they would agree... a must taste.

Chocnut even influenced one important building's architecture. Check out Folk Arts Theater in the CCP area. Their columns look like chocnut. Again, kidding.. probably a coincidence but when I pointed it out to my friends back when we had a field trip there, even the teachers started laughing and saying.. ya.. the columns do look like cemented chocnuts.

Chocnuts are a bit messy to eat as they crumble easily. The trick is to eat it off the wrapper or using the wrapper to catch all the crumbs while you lift it a miniscule bit.

Can be bought retail (per piece) or by pack. I think the whole pack would probably cost less than a dollar.

Made in Malabon. If I remember correctly.

1 mile of Luxury Shops and Culinary Feasts: Bonifacio High Street
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bonifacio High Street, which is a mixed-use development with high-end retail shopping, residential and commercial office components, is part of the 36-hectare Bonifacio Global City center in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. Besides the commercial and residential buildings, it also has parks and restaurant rows that cater to the A and B market.

This is the perfect place to walk your dog, take the kids shopping, and even have coffee with the ladies, all at once. Resembling the Sta. Monica promenade outside Los Angeles, California, this is as innovative as Manila. Many of your favorite SSI shops are there and a couple of flagship stores make the place even more exciting and refreshing.

Flip Flops at Havianas, Donuts at Krispy Kreme, Skid Free Slippers at Crocs, Cajun and Southern Cuisine at Claw Daddy, Coffee and Tea at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, shop at Nike, Buy Gap Accesories and a lot lot more!

Glorietta, Greenbelt, Parksquare Complex: Ayala Center
  • Tip Rating:
  • Center of Luxury Shopping in the Philippines, comparable to Orchard Road in Singapore or Pathumwan District in Thailand. Located in the Financial City of Makati in the Capital Region.

Glorietta used to be Quad in the 1970's and early 90's until it had a major facelift wherein in was remodeled and reconfigured by the Ayala Corporation into Glorietta Malls ( a more affordable place than high end greenbelt nearby) and is the main showcase of the Ayala Center, besided the ritzy Greenbelt, located just across an avenue. A prime 1 square mile block of prime retail space and malls that encompasses a prime area in Makati. It is still a work in progress since a wing (Glorietta 2) was destroyed by a bomb blast in 2007 and is currently being rebuilt.

    opens 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Sunday-Thursday
    10: am to 9:00 pm Friday-Saturday
