Intramuros --Old City: Filipino Crafts

by msison

This shop is located in the historic old city called Intramuros. A lot of Filipino history is within these walls. You can find bargain deals here and also enjoy knowing the history of the Philippines. Filipinos are known for their hand made crafts. There are many things you can purchase , but the one thing that sets Filipinos apart from the rest is the wooden utensils for cooking. As well as their paintings. This really depends on you. When I went there I couldn't get enough! You can spend approximately up to $100 and that will buy you loads of stuff..the exchange rate is great!

many: Another Shellcraft Vendor

by herzog63

As in the other tip you can buy lots of items made from local shells! Hanging planters, Lamp shades are very popular. Also the long strings of shells that can be used as a door / barrier between rooms are popular and cheap.

All of the popular beaches: Shellcrafts

by herzog63

At almost all of the popular beaches there will be a stand similar to the one in the picture selling all kinds of items made from shells and other sea life. Hanging baskets are quite popular. Also the jewelry can be had for good prices. You will have to bargain most of the time if you are a tourist. Actually you will have to bargain if your a local too! The vendors are trying to earn a living so they will charge you whatever they think you are willing to pay. A couple of words of caution. Many of the shells being used for the items might be banned in your home country. I found this out 3 years ago I was bringing some small shells through customs they were taken from me as they were on the "Banned" list. I had now idea!! Also I saw a women given a big fine in the Manila Airport trying to export a big Helmut Shell. She was a balikbayan returning to the states and she was pleading and...

Shawarma - a budget traveller's friend

by birgitte

Something from our Arab friends. Shawarma is a middle east type food adapted to the Filipino taste and made popular by an enterprising contract worker from Saudi Arabia. He thought it a great idea to set up a stand offering these affordable, filling and tasty treats on the streets. From its first appearance at Rustan's grocery store in Makati, Shawarma's popularity is attested to by the mushrooming shawarma stands in every city. Shawarma is made from the unleavened bread type thing. Fillings may either be grilled beef or chicken... sometimes turkey. I prefer chicken as it doesn't grease so much once it gets cold. Veggies in it are tomatoes, onions, and lettuce or cabbage. What makes it special is the sauce. Choose between hot orange sauce or creamy white onion and garlic sauce. I prefer making it swim in all the creamery goodness of the white sauce. If you want more of it, either ask...

in sari-sari stores everywhere and groceries: Chocnut

by birgitte

Chocnut is the official chocolate of the Philippines. (kidding!) although it comes close to it. As the name suggests, it is a combination peanut and chocolate candy. Very cheap.. if you are able to finish a dollar's worth of this candy, you'd probably have diabetes by then. Strange, on closer inspection, it is really inferior to the imported candies but open one when you have "balikbayans" expats visiting the Philippines and the scramble would be for chocnut despite the abundance of other imported chocolates. Mention chocnut to filipino friends living abroad and they would agree... a must taste.Chocnut even influenced one important building's architecture. Check out Folk Arts Theater in the CCP area. Their columns look like chocnut. Again, kidding.. probably a coincidence but when I pointed it out to my friends back when we had a field trip there, even the teachers started laughing and...

Philippine Caviar - Burong Talangka

by birgitte

Burong Talangka is eaten like sushi. Uncooked. Freshly caught midget crabs are sorted according to female and male. Only female talangkas are used to make this treat. Those who really are familiar with this dish prepare the talangka this way. First, the talangkas (most often held in sacks so they don't crawl all over the place) are subjected to running water so they will be scoured clean. Only the live ones will be chosen after cleaning. Then, it will be placed into a bucket, rock salt will be added (lots of it), and then the container will be covered. You can still hear the little crabs moving about in the container. They are flavoring themselves as they move about. You then place the container in the freezer. You are killing the germs by deep freeze and preserving the talangka by salting. Burong talangka has to be at least frozen one day before eating but some just wait til it freezes...

Rum, Shoes and Orchids

by HansWerner

ShoppingThe Philippines are not Thailand. So I haven´t seen any tailor shops on my journey. At some places for example Angeles you can find shoe shops where you can buy cheap hand made shoes. If you want to go shopping you have to go to the big cities like Manila or Cebu City. In Cebu City you can find for example the Ayala Center and the ???? center. If you like flowers you can buy beautiful orchids for example in the orchid garden in Moalboal. There is also a lot of cracked software to buy.
