Grill By Antonio's in One Destination by machomikemd The Grill by Antonio is the third and the cheapest restaurant owned by Sous Chef Antonio Escalante in Tagaytay City. If Antonio's Garden was gourmet european fusion cuisine and Antonio's All Day Breakfast is European Style Breakfast, The Grill is Filipino food, specifically Illongo Cuisine (from Iloilo province) of which he came from. Basically most meals available here are grilled but not all.
Chicken Inasal (grilled Chicken w/ lemongrass, this is similar to grilled vietnamese chicken that I sometimes wonder if many asian cuisine use lemongrass as seasoning in grilling chicken) thigh cost about 120 pesos (2.40 USD), chicken breast at 100 pesos. Bulalo at 400 pesos, Sizzling Bulalo Steak at 500 pesos. Inihaw na Liempo (grilled pork belly) at 150 pesos. Just off the road to Nasugbu just after Royale Tagaytay Estate in Barangay Buck Estate Alfonso Town is Sonya's Garden, which is a restaurant inside what is virtually a big greenhouse like complex with organic plants and vegetables plus a hotel. The dining area is wrapped in a mix of plastic, galvanized iron sheet and fish net and it lies next to a flower garden. The smell of fragrant flower wafts in the air as one walks into the hall. The set menu includes home-made pasta with a choice of two sauces (white sauce with chicken and a sprinkling of mango and a red sauce with sun dried tomatoes). Bottomless "dalandan" (a local citrus with a cross between an orange and lime) is served along with a generous bowl of salad and a choice of dressings. Shrimp (or chicken), mushrooms, nuts and other ingredients you can put on your pasta or munch separately are thrown in, plus a small bowl of jackfruit. Sonya's people grow some of the vegetables and ingredients in the menu. The dessert--grilled sweet potatoes soaked in caramel sauce--is quite a delight to the palate.
Price per head is P500 (or about USD 10) for adults and half for kids. Only one menu is served for lunch while there is a different menu for dinner. In other words, all customers for lunch or dinner eat the same food. Getting ready to eat, you notice small things which make the dining experience all the more pleasant. Like rose petals randomly scattered all over your table. The dinnerware used are also not uniform but all attractive, with floral designs. The Meal starts with the salad with the delicious toppings like finely chopped hardboiled egg, sliced chico (a small, brown fruit) with just about the right firmness and ripeness, sweet mangoes, crunchy nuts and cucumbers, cheese, and corn. Freshly baked home made bread is then served with several different dips: sundried tomatoes, white cheese, mushroom, and chili, followed by pasta with two sauces. The pasta sauces are: tomato-based and white cream sauce. These can be mixed with shrimps, anchovies, and olives which are also provided separately. For dessert, there is sweet banana coated with caramelized sugar, and sprinked with sesame seeds all over. There is also sweet carioca (cassava cake caramelized with brown sugar). To end the meal, hot water with mint tea leaves is served. Antonio's Garden (owned by fine dining chef Antonio Escalante) is a fine-dining restaurant in Barangay Niugan in Tagaytay serving gourmet food. It is the most high end of antonio's restaurants in tagaytay. the other restos are Antonio's All Day Breakfast and Antonio's Grill. The place is tucked discreetly into Tagaytay's interior, about 2 kilometers from the main road. The landmark is when you see a large radar dome (not the square radars on the left side of the highway!)with a road going through it on the right side, then turn right through it. Antonio's Garden has a big welcome sign at the gate, then go through a dirt road towards a wooden gate that welcomes you through a parking space and lush garden. There are several eating levels - an outdoor garden with a pond full of colorful Koi or a veranda overlooking the Tagaytay landscape. It certainly reminds you you're no longer in Manila. Appointments are tasteful and service attentive. There's a variety of starters, from cream of white onion soup to cream of tomato soup and coffee souffle. Salad with foie-gras (glazed) come with purplish dressing (raspberry vinaigrette). Antonio's menu includes a wide selection of main courses, which includes seafoods (scallops swimming on creamy sauce or tasty seabass, a house specialty) and steaks. A child's meal includes soup, main course, mashed potato and a scoop of ice cream. For dessert, chocolate souffle is worth checking out. This French-themed restaurant may be one of the most expensive outlets in Tagaytay at $20-$40 per person, depending on the order. Antonio's is open on Tuesdays for dinner only and on Wednesdays to Sundays for lunch (11:30 AM-3 PM) and dinner (5:30-9:30 PM).
Antonio's Trio - certified Black Angus terderloin medallion with béarnaise sauce, Lyonnaise potato, lamb cutlet with cardamon beurre blanc with gnocci, (The black angus tenderloin was as tender as it gets - well cooked on the outside, pink and juicy on the inside. The lamb was tender and seasoned just right leaving enough of its gamey taste intact). grilled Chillean seabass on truffle creamed mushrooms. That included farm-picked garden salad (like Sonia's Garden), tomato soup, dessert (double chocolate soufflé) and coffee. But my favorite was the US Black Angus 16 ounce Ribeye Steak which is good for 2 persons and served with AU Jus with freshly baked Bread. Price? about 1800 pesos (expensive by philippine standards but this kind of menu would cost about 50 dollars (2,800 pesos) in the states. Once upon a time, in the not-so-distant past [the late ’70s actually], back when this archipelago weren’t as dominated by jolly bees or red-haired clowns, there was one burger chain that stood out from the rest for being, well, deliciously unique. No doubt, Mushroom Burger created such a splash when it came out that not a few boldly predicted that it would actually put us in the world map of burgers. Mushroom Burger was cocnceptualized and founded by enterprenuer Alberto Dy in 1978 in Tagaytay City while selling freh mushroom at his farm where he heard a comment from a swiss tourist that mushrooms cost more than beef in their country hence he sparked on an idea to mix it together and form a hamburger. Mushroom Burger isn’t exactly a “chain” as it has only two branches [one in picturesque Tagaytay and another on West Avenue in Quezon City. But the deficiency in numbers proved more of a boon than a bane since it is one of the famous things to do here in Tagaytay City!
It was like their burgers: delicious as very distinctive and the cheapest mushroom burger is 30 pesos only and the 2 layer patty (like a Big Mac) at 79 pesos. The spaghetti with mushroom is priced at 55 pesos. A Purely Mushroom Burger with creamy mayonanaise costs 52 pesos a bun. The Hong Kong Rice was another winner wherein you have 2 mushroom inspired toppings with steamed rice and egg drop soup at 80 pesos. Bag of Beans, a coffee house, is just a few meters past Mendez Crossing and is one of Tagaytay's garden-themed cafés. This cozy place, owned by a couple named Eric (an Englishman) and Chat, sells pies and cookies they themselves bake and are served with locally brewed coffee. It's actually a coffee shop, bakery and a garden restaurant all rolled into one. The café has become a popular stopover for those on the lookout for an authentic English menu and a place to unwind after a round of binge eating. Its specialty are Home Made British Style Pies that come in different flavors--Shepherd's Pie, Steak Pie, Apple Pie--and are fairly priced (about 50 pesos for the cheapest) Pies can also be ordered on a 24-hour notice. Also on the menu are Pies 'n' Mash, Bangers and roast beef. A huge helping of Fish and Chips, an authentic British recipe, comes alongside a variety of omelettes and sausages. Freshly baked bread comes with different flavors--raisins, wheat and white bread--and makes for an alternative "pasalubong" from Tagaytay, instead of the usual buko pie or pineapples. Bag of Beans' coffee, grown from Amadeo town in Cavite, is a legend. A bottomless cup comes for about P40. Packed coffee beans are ready to be taken home too. This garden café has an element of wildlife thrown in with a pet monkey playfully pulling off tricks while rabbits roam around in an enclosure. Beans also offers a place for those looking for overnight accommodation.
Bag of Beans Excelsa (Baraco) Blend which sells for Php184.80 (a bit less US$4) for a 500 gram bag of ground coffee. Baraco coffee, is a type of coffee grown only in the Philippines, particularly in the provinces of Batangas and Cavite. It belongs to the species Coffea Liberica which has more than twice the caffeine content of arabica coffee. Arabica Robusta (combination of Robusta and Arabica Coffees) Blend for Php235.20 (US$5) for a 500 gram bag. Tropical Blend is made from roasted and ground excelsa, robusta and arabica beans. Tropical Brew retails for PhpP120 (a bit less than US$3) for a 500 gram bag. Steak Pie at 60 Pesos, COFFE ALAMID (coffee harvested from droppings of the Civet Cat or Alamid in Tagalog, also known as Coffee Luwak in Indonesia and Weasel Coffee in Vietnam, this type of coffee is the most expensive int the world! more expensive than arabian sanani, ethiopian sidamo or kona coffee!) at 117.50 pesos a cup (cheaper than in Bo's Coffee which is 240 pesos a cup). Coffee Alamid is Philippine civet coffee that comes only from the sweetest coffee cherries of the Philippine forests. The palm civets that naturally propagate the sugar palm trees are also the same civets that choose and eat these ripe cherries. The beans are then fermented in the digestive system of the civets, then excreted as whole beans. The coffee farmers pick these civet droppings during coffee season.Coffee Alamid when roasted, has sweet, chocolatey aroma that heightens the senses. It is light and naturally sweet. Its fine and smooth taste is perfect for a good morning start. It is a winning formula during high power meetings. Enjoy it black and pure to savor its true taste and aroma. *note that arabica coffee is smooth domesticated coffee found at starbucks and regular coffee shops, robusta is strong coffee added to instant coffee to add flavor and taste!, liberica is wild coffee thus is exotic. by syllybabe Full details of our dining experience are in must-see activities. Pic is of the dining area in the lower terrace where we chose to sit. by syllybabe Easy to spot because it's right along the highway, Coffee Bean has a store where they sell their yummy breads and a garden-style dining room downstairs. We had breakfast there and had their special omelette with a side of bacon and their bread. ceiling detail by syllybabe They used to be a small restaurant that people came all the way from Manila for. They have fresh salads, excellent Batangas brewed coffee, and delicious blueberry cheesecake. What used to be the restaurant is now their store and a new building with a full dining restaurant has been constructed. The photo is of the ceiling detail in the foyer. Very fresh and totally refreshing by syllybabe Dining here for the third time I knew what to expect in terms of food. Sonya's Garden specialties include homemade pasta with a choice of two sauces...white sauce with chicken and a hint of mango and a red sauce with sun dried tomatoes. You get a pitcherful of freshly squeezed dalandan (local citrus that's a cross between an orange and lime), a huge bowl of salad greens with their special dressing, and small bowls of fruit, nuts, and other stuff you can put on your pasta. The food's always the same and although good, I sensed something was missing...in spite of dining in the midst of their garden, I could no longer smell the fragrant rosewater that used to linger in the air from the moment you walked into the garden. Home of Buko Pie by AlbuqRay Colette's is famous for its buko pie. There are many locations that sell it in Tagaytay. This one looked the nicest and the pie was delicious.
