Palawan.

by cachaseiro

Palawan was until recently the last frontier in the Philippines and a very isolated island because it's located quite far from Manila, but these days the island is well connected by air with not just Manila but also other cities in the Philippines.Palawan is famous for it's beaches, it's underground river and unspoilt natural scenery. When i was there i spend quite some time cycling around Palawan and the island is one of the best places i have come across in the Philippines for cycling with fairly quiet roads with a decent surface. The island is fairly hilly with some smaller mountains scatterd all the way down this long island. The capital Puerto Princesa is a pleasant little harbour town with a nice seafront avenue that is full of locals in the evening. The place is getting very popular with backpackers and Philippine tourists and you will most likely see a big influx of package tourists...

Boracay Vacay

by beka1121

The island of Boracay is one of the hottest tourist destination in the Philippines. Its white fine sand, the night life , plenty of delicious food and water sports and most of all, the Boracay sunset. There are plenty of hotels to choose from the most expensive one to the cheapest ones. Plenty of bars. We spend our daytime exploring the beach and enjoyed the cold drinks and a big bite of the biggest hamburger and the water rides like the banana boat rides, parasailing, helmet diving, island hopping, and don't forget the ATV expedition. For our night time, we spend it on food tripping and watching the fire dancing and all the live bands. They say life in the island starts after sunset.

TRY THE LOCAL SPIRITS

by davidjo

Emperador brandy and Tanduay rum are the favorites of the locals and cost as little as 35 pesos for a small bottle----what a bargain as a single shot in a British pub would probably set you back £3. It is normal for the locals to hang around at night with a few bottles of their favorite booze, some ice and a communal glass which is passed from person to person. Probably they will have some Palutan too, which is snack food such as chicken wings, pork chizeron, or bbq'd meat. There are some cheaper versions of the brandy such as Generoso, Matador and other too ghastly to mention.

TASTE THE SAN MIGUEL

by davidjo

Make sure you down a few San Miguels while you are in the country, as it is the most consumed alcohol in the country. It also comes in 1 litre bottles although they are not widely available at restaurants. The San Miguel Brewery opened up in Manila in 1890 and took its name from the brewery in Barcelona. San Miguel also produces RED HORSE, a favorite of the locals as it is stronger. There are many other types of beer by San Miguel also. The second brewery and their only competitor is Asia Brewery whose beer is called 'beer na beer' and is slightly cheaper. They also produce Colt 45, a malt liquor which has a bit of a kick to it.You may buy litres of San Mig at sari-sari stores for as little as 65 pesos a bottle.

TRY EATING PANGA!!!!

by davidjo

Panga is the cheek, and it is the best and most delicious part of the fish. Normally one would eat tuna fish panga which has lots of tender meat. You should eat it with your fingers and dip it in soya and calamansi sauce/dip.don't leave the Philippines without trying it!!!

TRY EATING LATO

by davidjo

Lato is a grape like seaweed and is most common in Palawan. The seaweed grows on the seabed close to mangroves at a depth of 3-5 metres where the temperature of 29 degrees is ideal. The seaweed is harvested by divers and is collected in 60 kilo baskets and later it is cleaned by hand as the seaweed does not like fresh water. The seaweed is served with tomatoes and onion (adding vinegar and salt).

Mindanao.

by cachaseiro

Mindanao is one of the biggest islands in the Philippines but most visitor never go there as it has earned a reputation for being a place of rebellion and kidnappings and that is a shame cause the place is very nice. It's only a very small part of Mindanao that sees trouble (mainly the very south west around Zambonga) and the rest of the island is absolutely fine to travel.I went myself in hanaury 2013 to the north west coast of Mindanao and travelled around the Dipolog/Sindangan area and i was really having a good time.the almost compklete abscense of tourists makes the place very friendly and you have no tourist traps here.Tourists facilities are also limited because of that, but i found nice budget hotels everywhere i a coastline that is very unspoilt with very interesting fishing culture along it.This is without a doubt a place i will come back to for some more xploration.

Hiking the Mt. Pinatubo area.

by skullcrusher

Doing a hike to the crater of Mt. Pinatubo is something I have always been interested in doing. So I stayed in Angeles City for a few days (it makes for a good base to do the trek); where there are plenty of agencies to arrange a driver and a guide. As with most treking in the Philippines a guide is mandatory. The volcanic mountain literally blew it's top off a couple of decades ago so now what is left is a large crater filled with water. My group of six people hopped in an old Army jeep around 6:30AM and arrived at the hiking trail around 10AM or so. It's only about 7Km to the crater but the trail is a large path of volcanic ash, boulders, and several streams to navigate. I would suggest a sturdy pair of water-proof boots and also bring some sacks, plus a change of clothes in case you want to take a dip in the crater-lake when you reach it. The water is cool but on a hot day it will...

Peṅafrancia Festival in Naga City

by theguardianangel

Naga City is the capital of Camarines Sur. It is one of the developing cities in the country where the locals find their way of living. The Peṅafrancia Festival in Naga City is the highlighted event celebrated every 3rd week of September. Hundreds of devotees, guests, tourists flock to Naga to witness the procession of “Mahal na Ina” (Loving Mother). It’s a 9 day novena where on the 1st day the replica of the Madonna in Peñafrancia, Spain, is brought from its shrine to the Naga Cathedral where the novena is held. On the last day, the image is returned to her shrine. The most awaited event is the fluvial procession on a Saturday afternoon where the image is carried in a pagoda. Thousands of lit candles by the devotees wait at the sides of the river for the pagoda to arrive. The image comes closer when hundreds of colorful boats of voyadores (male devotees) are seen sailing in the...
