Panay

by EdVallance

This island is host to one of the country's most colourful fiestas, Ati-Atihan. It also has a beautiful interior with mountains, rice terraces, very strong animistic traditions, some traditional houses, ritual machete fighting, singing debates and chants that record the history of the people.Panay is also home to several communities of Ati, the Negrito people indigenous to the Philippines. Some live in small mountain communities while others continue the nomadic lifestyle of their ancestors after a fashion, wandering from town to town and begging.

Guimaras

by EdVallance

A little island between Panay and Negros with a few good beaches. Of three beaches I visited here Tatlong Pulo was the nicest. Small, isolated and sheltered from the sea by a few offshore rock islands, the only accommodation is in a treehouse in the village next to the beach! It costs 150 pesos per night no matter how many people and for food and drinks the friendly locals only charge you what it costs them in a nearby market! Two other beaches Are Alibuha and Guisi. Both are white sand. The latter has unfriendly accommodation owners, lots of jellyfish but no tourists. The former has no jellyfish, nice accommodation owners but is heaving with (predominantly Filipino) tourists.I had the impression that Guimaras would be a nice place to explore by bike but did not have the opportunity while I was there.

Sagada, Mountain Province

by EdVallance

A very relaxing mountain retreat with a refreshingly cool climate. Beautiful area with pine forests, jagged limestone cliffs and plenty of trekking opportunities in the nearby mountains. It is VERY touristy though with hundreds of hotels and restaurants serving BLT sandwiches and breakfasts such as "muesli, yoghurt and fruits" unheard of elsewhere in the country. Many of the houses in town are very unusual for the Philippines, being large, multi-storey and multi-coloured.For culture buffs there are also huge caves stacked high with coffins and some of the limestone cliffs also have caves with hanging coffins where village elders continue to be buried to this day.

Islands to the North of Palawan

by EdVallance

The Calamian Islands, including Coron and Busuanga, can be reached by ferry from Manila. They include some spectacular beaches and rock islands (some with fresh water lakes walled in by tall jagged rocky hills), great snorkeling opportunities and the underwater wrecks of ten ships that were sunk during a sea battle - a great opportunity for divers.A further nine hours by boat takes you to the village of El Nido on the northern tip of Palawan proper. Unless you have enough money to stay at one of the super-expensive resorts in the Bacuit Archipelago, this is the easiest place from where those islands can be reached. You can either pay about 600 pesos per person for a full day tour, taking you to various stunning islands and beaches, or just find someone willing to drop you off at your own private tropical paradise beach and pick you up later in the day or even the next day. This should...

two weeks in Philippines

by henkvan

Hi, you have two weeks, assuming your first two days and the last day are spent in Manila that leaves you about 11 days for example. Manila really has little to offer the foreign tourist. As a travelwriter/journalist the second article I wrote about Philippines was THERE IS MORE TO LIFE THAN MANILA. However, you could have a look at Intramuros and its museum and pick up some history. There is also corregidor island to look at(both can be found on the internet) THE tourist spot and popular is BAGUIO CITY up in the mountains, where the wealthy Filipinos have their summer vacation to escape the heat.It also appears from your home page that you like the ocean with perhaps even a spot of snorkelling or diving.Might I suggest an itinerary: After you have seen what you wanted to in Manila take a flight to Baguio City and spend two nights, giving you at least a full day for looking around. Then,...

VISIT PAGSANJAN FALLS

by hanspeter_W.

Pagsanjan Falls (indigenous name: Magdapio Falls) is one of the most famed waterfalls in the Philippines. The falls have grown into a major tourist attraction for the region. Pagsanjan is most famous for these falls in particular. The town itself dates from early Spanish times and lies at the confluence of two rivers, the Balanac and the Bumbungan.

Malapascua!!!

by elsadran

Malapascua is the pearl of the Visayas! This little paradise with its sugar white sand and the turquoise sea has everything for relaxing exotic vacations. There is a line of comfortable beach resorts on Bounty beach and many cheaper ones behind to fit all budgets. There are also some diving centers ready to fulfil all diving aspirations. Nice coral gardens and small beautiful islands nearby offer great diving opportunities. Thresher sharks can only be sighted here. Locals live in the small village on the southwest corner and are quiet and friendly. A round-trip on foot is very enjoyable. There is a lot for you to explore on land and under water. Night life is limited to the few small bars and restaurants on Bounty Beach and the hotels. Locals call it the "small Boracay" but it is in fact a quiet and unspoilt "Boracay" of many years ago. Much better for peaceful vacations!I have...

Lechon - a "thing" you'll find in big celebrations

by Penelope4

The Philippines is predominantly inhabited by pork-eating citizens. I don't know how to put it nicely without referring to a religion. When Pinoys celebrate big occasions, be it baptism, grand birthdays, weddings, Lechon will be served (roasted suckling pig). Even Filipino butchers have a sense of humour because they stick a red apple in the mouth of the roasted suckling pig. If you are not invited to any occasion while in the Philippines, you may ask your hotel which restaurant close to your location offers lechon. It's not really found everywhere because pigs in the Philippines run the fastest compared with pigs from all over the world. And don't forget to eat your Lechon with the gravy! Yummy!!!
