Hurricanes-Mt Mayon killed 1000 !!!

by elsadran

On December 15th 2006 a devastating hurricane hit the central parts of Philippines. It was not the first or the last natural disaster as the Philippinos are used to living under the continual threat of hurricanes. It has become their way of life pulling themselves together and trying to go on with the remains of the catastrophe. Very often the damage is very extensive and at times they have to start from scratch since there is nothing left. It has become their life's great complaint towards Mother Nature. It's the high toll they have to pay for the extraordinary beauty of their homeland. I had a sinking feeling at the sight of houses razed flat and uprooted trees laying dead in Bicol, the region which sustained the highest rate of casualties. It was more than 1000 souls, as I read in the newspapers, that the ruthless typhoon Durian took away and many more were left homeless...Many people...

Stop! Thief!

by kidfree

Unwary travellers, specifically single males should take good care when dealing with Filipinas such as this one. After knowing them for a while you may start to take leave of your senses and get the urge to revisit the Philippines, spending all your savings on long distance phone calls and flights to and from europe. This woman stole my heart and has yet to return it, just one year after this picture was taken we were married on the island of Panay on a memorable February day. Ten years and two pretty princesses later we still return every couple of years and are forced to endure days on end of hospitality, endless teasing about when we might produce a son and generally have a great time. May it continue ad infinitum.

Unreliable Cebu Pacific E-Tickets

by nimato

Just wanted to share this info from a friend and work colleague:I purchased tickets for my mom and sister using the Cebu Pacific website earlier this week and they were set to leave yesterday evening (April 17, 2007). As the policy for online booking is "book and buy" and because my family has been regular Cebu Pacific passengers, I had no qualms whatsoever on the tickets or the flight itself. However, when my mom and sis got to the check in counter (after the long lines of the summer season), they were shocked to be told that there were no more seats available for the flight they have tickets for! My mom got angry and demanded an explanation and all they could muster was that they were overbooked and that they had no more seats available on this flight! Talk about MAJOR INCONVENIENCE! Take note that this was for the last flight to Iloilo (about 8PM) and that the next flight was the...

Manila - Makati, also other areas

by whvcebu

Careful when crossing roadsMMDA (Metropolitan Manila Development Authority), which did not have a chance to catch the drivers without discipline has turned policies and acts against pedestrians very strictly! Yes, there is even a thread of getting jailed when crossing the roads on other than the designed crossings. Previously it was called JAI-Walking violation. The new order is a ruling that had its reason in the 271 death on Philippine roads during 2004, causulaties, which could have been avoided, when crossing at the correct places. The new ruling has got the support of President Aquino who worries about the security very much although there are a lot of critics."Walk on the white line or pay Peso 150" is the new slogan. If one cannot pay the 150 Peso fine (about US $ 2.50) you will get a 7 minute lesson or you will be invited to a 7 hours traffic seminar. If one doesn't accept this...

Be sure to drink bottled water while in the Philippines. While I was in Cebu, someone made a mistake and filled my water bottle with tap water. I only took a few sips and was sick the rest of the night.

Warning about Black Market Money Changers

by crewrower

Many Filipinos will tell you not to use the black market money changers. This is good advice in that a lot of these money changers will cheat you. However, the exchange rate on the black market is generally higher than at the banks. The key is to remember the old adage that if it sounds good to be true, it probably is.I got taken by a classic slight of hand. A tout on the street showed me a card listing in exchanges rates for various foreign currencies (this is common to encounter on the streets and even in shopping malls). I followed him to the nearby money changer to exchange my Chinese currency. I thought I was being wise by asking to be paid in small P20 and P50 notes (to reduce the chance of getting counterfeit bills). The money changer paid me the rate we agreed upon, which was outstanding. As I was counting one stack of peso received, she stole back another stack (half the stack)...

THE DREADED TAXES

by nodarcdam

I deeply lament that while the Philippine Government encourages tourism, it had imposed certain indispinsable matter which would deter Filipinos from exploring the different islands. There are TAXES. If you see certain advertisement on travel packages in various destinations, please be reminded that the package price, usually, does not include taxes. For information purposes, there is an existing travel tax of P1,555.00 and the Expanded Value Added Tax of 10%. The taxes accrue even when you just buy airplane tickets. It is advisable to always buy a round trip ticket as the taxes will be assessed only once. Otherwise, the taxes will be assessed for every single way ticket that you will buy. Travel Agencies would tell you that the EVAT is imposed on the package price or airplane fare and travel tax. Cannot blame them as that is what the airlines told them. For me, this is legally infirmed...

Crime

by trisanna

The Philippines is no where near the safest country in Asia. Some areas, such as Palawan and Mindanao are relatively dangerous. If you are going to these areas, you should check with your country's department of state. Beach goers and scuba divers have been kidnapped from these areas and some beheaded. Crime in the city is also common. A lot of pickpockets. We visited one church and the priest had to remind everyone that no one should leave valuables behind-even when people were going for the host. Carry a money built and be careful. Don't be out on empty streets at night.

The water in the city is usually safe to drink. Though many visitors preferred to drink mineral or distilled water, its widely available on local stores, at very low prices (approx 20 cents). No epidemics that hit the country, but it is wise to check your local doctor for some vaccination. Malaria probably if you plan to go to highlands of Palawan, but on the cities, no problem.
