Macho Men & Guns

by BLSM

I am sure it is still true in Mindinao now because of the news reports. Back in the early 80s, after about 7 or 8 at night the local constabulary come out . It is a good idea to not wander around. I remmeber the men with the guns would patrol for a while and then go for a little refreshment. And I don't mean Coke. The local drink and an uzi make anyone a big man. A friend during the day does not mean a friend at night. Women stay home at night. It is a macho thing. It was also true outside the cities on the other islands and Luzon.

Warning: Be so careful in Manila. I nearly got f...d 2 times in one day with tranquilizer drinks or knock out drops!Never trust anybody, who is OVERfriendly, speaks excellent English, is very good dressed and wants to invite you after 10 minutes to his or her preferred bar to have a drink or cocktail.Order a bottle of beer (closed) and open it by yourself.....Pula Caballo (Red Horse!!)

We Filipinos are generally a friendly and hospitable lot, always willing to lend a hand...but still there are a few bad apples about. Beware the 'overly' friendly 'Pinoy,' especially in the city; while Filipinos are naturally curious and gregarious, even to the point of bending backwards to accomodate a visitor's needs, you are best to be wary of those who immediately befriend you and ask you out for a drink or to their homes (kindly note that this does not apply in the provincial areas, where hosting travelers is traditional). Keep your wits about you, and do not hesitate to request assistance/advice from other locals should you be in doubt.

Apparently the color of your skin doesn't matter when it comes to kidnappings. Not that the majority of people aren't good, but when native people won't go to certain places, you'd do well to heed their advice. As a Westerner or someone perceived to have money, you are a potential target.Anti-terrorist security measures have been in place in the major shopping centers of Manila for some time, and probably other parts of the country as well. If you're driving a car, be prepared to pop the trunk and have the underside examined with mirrors. Also, your purse will be searched when you enter a mall and sometimes again when entering an upscale store within the mall.

Water

by BLSM

There are places out in the barrio where the water is not safe. Most places it is ok. Ask, the locals will tell you. Don't go wadeing around in the rice pads. Shistosmomis(Can't spell it) is around, it is a parasite that gets into breaks in the skin. Treatment is not a lot of fun,I have been told.

BE SIMPLE!Do not be so flashy or attention seeker specially when you are in the open streets...this is so as not attract the envous snatchers. BE ALERT! on where your belongings and where you are or you'll be left behind...specially on busy streets.

Jeepneys...they are fun and a great way to travel...but make sure you get a big rice bag to sit on. Also, if you take any boat in the Philippines....take your little blow-up wings with you and put in a secretive place where your friends won't see it...if the boat sinks...you will drift ashore while your friends drink salty sea water cocktails!

Although Limasawa has some of the most beautiful and clearest water you will ever see.... there are dangers which the traveler must be aware of. Such as Giant Whale Sharks, Sharks, Coral, Jelly fish, and more. Believe it or not, one of the most prevalant dangers are the STARFISH which plague the shallows! The star fish there have hard SPIKES which stick up and can cause some serious damage to one's foot!! I could only think of prehistoric times when I saw these starfish!See the photo here.

by SnowAngel

Get your money exchanged at a reputable bank, don't use the cashiers on main street!! Oh and by the way, there wasn't any toilet paper there, they used the splash technique, so you might want to bring your own if things haven't changed. The pic is of the main street right outside the base... in the corner on the right hand side is where the money exchangers are... beware!!
