There are many hazzards to avoid in the Philippines. Mostly it is the pick pocket and the cab drivers in Manila. I felt you could either spend time getting around and experiencing the local culture, or you could go up scale just a bit and save yourself some hassel. I was able to get a round trip ticket on a bus and ferry from Manila to Puerto Galera for under 20 US dollars. Very reasonable for good, safe transportation. But when I lived in Morocco I rode the local buses and enjoyed them. Of course I only carried what I needed and it was held close at hand. Because I had dive gear I elected to move up a notch and it reduced some problems but it also reduced interaction with the local population while in transit.
