Ukay ukay at Sta. Cruz Market

by mikotini

Don't shy away from the fact that it is, indeed, a market (wet fish, meat and vegetable market) and just take all the smells in without a moment to lose. Head straight to the ukay ukay! A treasure trove of clothes, shoes, bags, even bedpreads and stuffed toys. Some even find designer items like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Guess, Coach, etc. But beware some bag vendors will try to sell off their fake designer bags and would try to convince you that it is authentic. Don't be afraid to ask if you could see it. Study each detail, it is quite easy to differentiate authentic ones from the fakes, especially if its secondhand bags. Lingerie, bras and slips are abundant but please scrutinize every article of clothing, try to get those new ones(those with tags still on).and please don't even think about getting (bottoms)underwear coz we don't exactly know where it's been. CASH ONLY

by malbari

A good rule of thumb to remember when in Zamboanga is that its a "cash only" kinda town. Most if not all stores (even in malls) do not take credit cards. And if you do find one that does, you found an exception.

NOT MUCH SHOPPING IN ZAMBOANGA

by malbari

Zamboanga is a provincial town in the Philippines so don't expect a wide variety of things to shop for... in fact, don't even expect to see any malls. The closest the city comes to a mall is a decent-sized 4 or 5 story building in the downtown area called Mindpro which houses a few stores of variety inside. There are specialty stores outside that surround Mindpro however. If you do feel like taking something home with you, there are some outdoor stores, also in the downtown area, that sell native items (ie. wooden ashtrays, native artifacts, necklaces, etc) for cheap. There's lots to choose from and the people are very helpful.
