World Eats: My PLace!

Claude-Andre, What a great idea. I am really surprised no one has responded as yet!!! And I wish I would've come up with the idea, simple but great! If you travel you, (I would think,) love different foods! It's just natural.Anyway, I am not really sure which is my favorite, I have lots of favorites, so, if you don't mind I'd like to send you a few, at least.Hot garlic Pork:* 1 1/2 lbs boston butt pork cut into 1 inch pieces.* Cover with water. Boil, then simmer until tender, usually about 45 minutes to an hour. Lid off and at the end you should have some water left over, save it. You can also use a chicken stock base. What ever you use it should be flavorful as this is the base for the sauce.* Let the pieces cool* Mix a temura batter, beer batter or your favorite batter and then deep fry the pieces unitl golden brown. Drain on paper towel* Using the left over stock, add, "to...

Available at different outlets: Don't drink the water, drink the coke

by SLLiew

After reading many "horror" stories of stomach upset from drinking water in Nepal, I was literally on a coke drinking diet in Katmandu. Of course, it just made me more thirsty. At Angkor Wat , under the hot sun, you can buy two cans of coke for a US dollar sold by young children who can speak fluent English and Japanese phrases.Coca Cola and other major American soda company have become a standard item in most Asian countries. As it is potent itself enough to "kill off" some bacteria, it is a safe drink straight from the can or bottle.Ensuring clean and boiled water is important when visiting the more isolated parts of Asia. Ice cubes if not well prepared can be a trouble maker. So play it safe and drink coke or pepsi or kickapoo.

"Yi Shun...": Don't Miss the Desserts in Macau

by iam3xxx

This no frills, old but clean dessert house specialises in milk desserts. My favourite was milk curd which was served in white porcelain bowls. Business is brisk so avoid peak hours. A real wonder of Cantonese desserts. Melts in your mouth and not in your hands!

Five Star Hotel Buffets!: Blended Spices

by lmkluque

There is nothing like a delicious meal eaten in luxurious surroundings! One of the best tips I learned from my friends was to eat at the buffets in large, luxury hotels. The buffet was priced reasonably and the food was deliciously flavorful! Eating at hotel buffets was a perfect way to try out many of the traditional dishes of Indonesia and Malaysia without having to order each item from the menu, which could really be expensive. The price of a buffet meal offered at these hotels was a bit more expensive than the average buffet at home, but worth every penny and I suggest that you try them out at least once! Sambal Udong--Shrimp cooked in a chili garlic sauce--was my favorite. Of course all the other items offered are very delicious and should not be ignored.

Hear the Call of the Hawker!: Hawker

by lmkluque

Indonesia Throughout the streets there are Hawkers offering various items, including fruit, vegetables for cooking and some prepared meals as well. The price of these items are not high and an affordable meal can be purchased through these hawkers which would cost much less than one bought at a restaurant. Of course, from your hotel room you'll most likely not hear the call. Probably my favorite item from the hawker was the controversial Durian! My friends were excited to eat the fruit and they were also interested in knowing my reaction! A very funny moment!

Picking Seeds

by aukjejetty

Alongside the road you will often see lotusseed sellers. After the lotusflower blossoms it leaves a bowl full of lotusseeds that you can eat. They are very filling, and if you bike out to villages you might even be able to find a field yourself and pick your own lotus. It is a good snack inbetween meals, and a healthy one.

Along the street: Smelly Fruit

by aukjejetty

Durian...you can smell it from a distance, but don't let it keep you away from this fruit. At least try it! I had it quite a few times in Bangkok. It is more pricy than all the other fruits, but also believed very good for your health (and should cure impotence.)It is a bit tricky to open up the fruit, but the street vendors will do that for you. You point at the fruit that you want, they weigh the fruit and you pay the amount, then they open the durian up and take out the pieces that are inside. When the fruit is soft (ripe) it is the best! While writing about it I kinda miss it...

Sweet And Juicy Snacks: Fruit Stands

by lmkluque

IndonesiaThe Fruit Stands offer oranges, lemons and bananas all I'm used to at home plus so many more exotic fruits that I've never tasted before or since! Be adventurous and try them all! The durian was most impressive, but the Rumbatan was my favorite.

Just Down The Street: Roti Maker

by lmkluque

Malaysia On the side of the road you'll see these little places that offer Roti and coffee or tea. Watching the Roti Maker is much like watching the Tortilla Maker or the Pizza Maker. A simple entertaining moment, with a delicious result. Roti, the big disc of bread!
