Night time

by xaver

Singapore, or at least the city centre like city all Marina and Orchard give their best for sure after sunset. The building lights transform the grey town and give to it a lot of different colours and tones which are a pure joy for eyes. After sunset you can actually also see locals eating, drinking and talking together instead of being stuck to their ipods, telephones or psp like during the day.The city becomes more human.

Discount Card to Singapore Walks

by freddie18

Singapore will do everything to thank great people who believed in their walking tours. They (I mean Singapore Walk Tours) offered a S$3 discount for every additional tour. And this Discount Cards will cost you only S$1. You can buy them right up from the Tour Guides. And where to find the Tour Guides? Just show up near the MRT Stations and look for the Singapore Walk Tour. Better still, check on their website as follows......http://www.singaporewalks.com/Other information that I find useful:Journeys Pte Ltd:Office: 170 Tyrwhitt Road, 2nd Level, Singapore 207573Tel: (+65) 6325 1631Fax: (+65) 6224 0136E-mails: discover@journeys.com.sgfun@singaporewalks.comEnjoy your walks!

Drinking

by Robmj

Alcohol is heavily taxed in Singapore, so either buy it from supermarkets and local shops where it is still relatively expensive or buy at happy hour which is quite a common theme. In 2002, at happy hour I was paying $15 (Singapore) for a jug (1 litre) of tiger beer! However, when in Rome...........................Enjoy

FIRST BEACH VISIT IN SINGAPORE

by mamasan69

Even though this was my first visit to Singapore and I'm no expert; I think many of the sites I was taken to including Sentosa would be a nice start for anybody visiting here. I really had many good memories of Singapore once I returned to Bangkok; mainly because Singapore is so clean and quiet in comparison. However, even though I enjoyed all the activities I did, the beach near the end of my trip was a very good memory. Like many of the places I saw on this trip, the beach was very clean and seemed to have many things for people to do. Everthing here on Sentosa seemed to me that it was very organized even though it was busy. I spent the whole day here and when I go back for a return visit to Singapore, I plan to come back again for more.

Visiting Singapore during Christmas

by bkarjee

Its a pleasure to be in Singapore during Christmas. All shops are open and there are lot of sales promotions going on during this period, where you can get very good bargains. The main city area is at its festive best and Orchard road (in heart of the city) is decorated for more than 3 KM stretch. You will never regret your decision

The Languages and Public Holidays of Singapore

by xuessium

English is the first language here, while the mother tongues (Chinese, Malay & Tamil) are the second languages. Politically, Malay is the National Language though all 4 languages are recognised officially. The Chinese also speaks a variety of Chinese dialects - the 5 most common ones are Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hainanese and Hakka, followed by Fuchow, Henghua and Shanghainese."Singlish" however, is the lingua fraca, used in everyday life - a distortion of English with mother tongues, dialects and exaggerated exclaimations. Some language purists frown on it but its existence is never in doubt._____________________________Singapore has 11 public holidays, most of them concentrated in the first half of the year.In no particular order, the 11 holidays are:New Year [1 Jan], Chinese New Year (2 days), Hari Raya Puasa (the Muslim New Year), Hari Raya Haji (Muslim Pilgrimage Day), Good...

Tipping is not required in Singapore

by xuessium

Tipping is not a culture nor a practice in Singapore. The government has strongly discouraged tipping in the past to deter the growth of a climate of corruption. Most hotels, restaurants and upmarket eating places instead, charges a flat 10% service charge. (On top of a Good & Services Tax of 5% circa 2008)However, then said, if you has receive excellent service and felt compelled to reward accordingly, then a tip would be a nice gesture. The Singapore government has tried means and ways to encourage service providers to put their best foot forward, but unfortunately, as a Singaporean, I'm ashamed to say that we still have much grounds to cover considering there are still service providers out there who felt that it is be our privilege to receive service from them instead. This mentality cannot be condoled.

Religions

by StayNuts

Most Singaporeans celebrate the major festivals associated with their respective religions. The variety of religions is a direct reflection of the diversity of races living there. The Chinese are predominantly followers of Buddhism, Taoism, Shenism, Christians, Catholics and some considered as 'free-thinkers' (Those who do not belong to any religion). Malays have the Muslims and Indians are Hindus. There is a sizeable number of Muslims and Sikhs in the Indian population. Religious tolerance is essential in Singapore. In fact, religions often cross racial boundaries and some even merge in unusual ways in this modern country. Younger Singaporeans tend to combine a little of the mysteries of the older generation with the realistic world that they know of today. Religion is still an integral part of the cosmopolitan Singapore. Many of its most interesting buildings are religious, be it old...
