Multiculturalism and Harmony

by DanielF

By applying strict norms of conduct, Singaporeans have achieved a prosperous society where very different communities have learned to live in peace and harmony. As a matter of fact, they have made of this peaceful coexistence the main feature of their national identity. Of all the communities living in Singapore, the Chinese is the largest and most influencial. The presence of the Chinese in the peninsula of Malasia dates back to the British colonial times. However, the Singapore of today is a very westernised society.

Singapore Botanic Gardens

by Confucius

I really enjoyed my visit to this park and was most impressed by the rainforest and orchid garden. It's refreshing to see the large trees and imagine what Singapore looked like before it became a city state. This is one of two places where you can get a good look at the last remaining remnants of Singapore's primeval rainforest. (The other is Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.)It was here that the first rubber tree in Asia was brought from Brazil in 1877, an agricultural experiment that led to the development of a prosperous industry that spread from Malaya to southern Thailand. The National Orchid Garden includes a number of VIP orchids named after the most famous people to sniff the flowers. You will find orchids named after Margaret Thatcher, Emperor Akihito, and the wife of Indonesia's former president Suharto. this is a popular destination for photographers, and on any given day you might...

Money changing in singapore

by TonyBagnall

the american express desk at the airport gave me by far the best rate for changing sterling amex travellers cheques, and charged no commission. Generally rates in singapore are good and money changing is easy, there are amex booths on orchard street and smaller money changers in shopping centres, although of course the rates are worse.

Some Favourite view's of Singapore's Skyline

by Nixter01

The views. All of Singapore's view's were amazing and stunning whether it be by night or day. Its too hard to say which is best as during the day you can see everything and beyond, but by night everything is lit up and looks beautiful. The only advice I can give here is to look yourselves, then decide. Lying on Sentosa's sandy beaches, and swimming in the lagoon.I miss watching the lightening at 5am in the morning lighting up my room, I miss taking an afternoon dip in the pool, Sipping drinks outside a bar whilst its raining and still being hot !I miss SIngapore full stop.

Singapore Politicscape In Gist

by xuessium

Yes, we are a democracy. We go to the polls every 5 years for Parliament and 6 years for the President. Parliament is unicameral (no Upper House). Westminster style of governance where the Prime Minister (chosen by Parliament) is Head of the Executive despite the President being Head of State. There are 84 elected Members of Parliament (MPs), with 3 potential slots reserved for the highest losing opposition candidates as Non-Constituency MPs (if there are no opposition members in Parliament), as well as another 9 slots for non-partisoned & non-poll elected Nominated MPs. The current Parliament (2006-2011) is dominated by the People's Action Party (in power since 1959) with only 2 elected opposition members from the Worker's Party of Singapore and the Singapore Democratic Alliance-Singapore People's Party (1 each). There is 1 NCMP from the Worker's Party of Singapore for the current term...

SQ rocks!!!!!

by THLIN

Hm, flying with SQ to Singapore really has a lot of fun. If you happened to an SQ passenger like myself, please do KEEP you boarding pass. It really hleps sometimes when you sojourn within this lovely city-state. I show my boarding pass in the zoo, and they gave me free tram service, which cost SGD4.5. It's not worth a lot, but in many ways, you can feel how Singapore government promotes their country and tourism. If you are from Asian country, I think SQ promotes very very cheap airfare from time to time. Stay tune with their website, wonder pops-up non-stop.Also, if you have any problem moving here, you simply go to SQ office in Orchard Road for help.

Don't Panic...

by THLIN

Really really really don't panic when you encounter the following situation:when you have meal with friends in hawker centres, and you hear someone says " Mada lao le." Then, you will see a lot of people RASH to the carpark. Why?! Mada stands for police in Malayu and lai le is comes in Chinese. Yah, if you indulged in a lovely meal, you can also easily forget to pay your parking fee for another hour. What can a forienger do at the moment?! Take a picture might not be a bad idea!!!

Beautiful sunset

by victorwkf

Although Singapore is a modern city located near the equator where beautiful sunset is not too common, ocassionly you can witness a beautiful sunset among the skyscrapers and tranquil water surrounding the island. A good example are these sunset photographs taken by me at the Kallang Basin area to the east of the city area (the Singapore National Stadium and Singapore Indoor Stadium are located here).

That Lion Symbol

by xuessium

According to 13th century Malay Annals, a prince named Sang Nila Utama spotted a creature he believed was a lion and named the island "Singa-pura" (Lion City), from which Singapore was derived. The Lion Symbol was launched in 1986 as an alternative national symbol. The National Flag and State Crest have legal restrictions that prevent their commercial use. The Lion Symbol was chosen as a logo that best captures the characteristics of Singapore's reputation as the Lion City. The lion symbolises courage, strength and excellence. It is in red against a white background - the colours of the National Flag. The five partings of the lion's mane represent the five ideals embodied in the five stars of the flag: democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality. The lion's purposeful bearing symbolises the nation's single-minded resolve to face challenges and overcome obstacles.
