Sissy Pink Drink and Nuts by bpacker Yes, this bar made it to that infamous '1000 places to see before you die' list. I'm not kidding, it is recommended that you sit in this noisy bar and order a Singapore Sling before you kick the bucket.Despite the crappy list, it's still worth making a trip to the Long Bar at Raffles Hotel. This place promises a rowdy, if not earthy-good time for you. Live music is great, beer is served in a round bottom glass and you can chow on free-flow peanuts and throw the shells all over the floor. Sure beats paying $1000 if you do the same thing outside the hotel! Oh yes, and the pink drink.... Sad to say, the Singapore Sling in Singapore does not live up to its reputation. The drink tasted too much of pineapple and a tad bit too sweet. It tasted way better at another Raffles Hotel in Siem Reap ( Grand Hotel d'Angkor ) because the drinks are freshly made there unlike the prepared concoctions over here. Other than the cheesy pink drink, take note of the eccentric decor. You'll see mechanical ratten swaying rhythmically to the left and right. It's rather hypnoptic so staring at it too long might leave you in a trance.
This is honestly a home to sun-burnt tourists and lonely expats so you can come here in a sarong and a loose top. Hold on! Did I mention that is the exact dress code of the wait staff... Leave a Comment

Shakin' your booty, picture from New Paper by bpacker Have you ever watched the movie, Coyote Ugly? If you did, I'm quite sure you watched it for Piper Perabo shaking her booty on the bar top like a crazed animal and not for the dumb plot. Whatever it was, that horrid movie spawned many bar-top dancing clubs across the world and Singapore is no exempt. It even got so original that it grabbed the full name and nearly got sued by the original Coyote Ugly in US! ( It has since abbreviated itself to an ambiguous "CU" to avoid those nasty legal stuff ) Well, I popped down to CU last Saturday with some very eager guys who couldn't wait for the action to start. But when it did, it was a real let-down. Like the fake Hard Rock in HoChiMinh, this CU in Singapore didn't live up to the name it plagiarised. Those gals who were supposed to shake their booties were bored and were more than eager to grab dumb volunteers to do their jobs for them. Can't blame them, after all the bar was mostly empty and only filled with old Caucasians hooting away at God-knows-what and very few local girls. Even the guys I was with were bored...and these fellas were from the Midwest! Guess they would have seen more action on the fields where there were cows. We left after our beers and headed for a better club after that...

Club Logo by bpacker Let me just say something upfront, I'm not keen on the Singapore Idol Competition but I'm hellaluv big fan of the celebrity judges! One of the judges for this competition is the singer, Douglas Oliveria and boy, does he rock! I caught him in action at Bar None last weekend and together with his band, 9 Lives, he could all beat all the finalists in Singapore Idol hands down! The range of music that the band played was eclectic and it ranged from the Rolling Stones to Hoobastank. Yeah, he had all of us rocking till 2am so Bar None is probably the hottest watering hole in town, right now. Cost : Free for those who stay in the hotel + one guest, $26 for visitors *Douglas O is a regular. He's there everyday except Monday and probably on days where he appears on Singapore Idol
Club Apparel. Guys, no flip flops and shorts please! My Mid-Western friends were turned away at the entrance since they were in Safari attire. Are you an owl? Love venturing out at night? A sheesha, Cafe Samar, Arab St by bpacker Just in case you're wondering what the hell a sheesha is, it's a pretty nifty Arabic device used for smoking. And surprise, surprise, you don't have to buy an air ticket to Yemen to smoke one. You can do it right here in Singapore. There's some shops in Arab Street ( sheesh, where else right?) that offer a suck on one of these big smoking devices. Just think of it as a giant pipe. Of course, instead of an ordinary filter, there is a large bowl of water at the base to filter out the nicotine ( it's pretty convincing as a placebo) and a long hose with a mouth piece for you to suck those perfumed tabacco fumes. Perfumed? Yup,the tobacco are mixed with semi-dried fruit and heated to a very high temperature with the help of charcoal embers... To smoke of these things, grab the hose and take a long suck from the mouthpiece. Exhale slowly. That's all... You can try this in Cafe Samar for S$14. A good flavour to try would be apple and mint.
Strictly casual. Smoking a sheesha puts you in a langarous mood. Are you an owl? Love venturing out at night? Click on b'packer's page, for more night haunts. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: Cafe Samar is at 19 Baghdad Street.

Balmy Nights at Cafe Samar by bpacker I felt as though I stepped into another time and place the moment I steppd into Café Samar. Lazy rotating fans, exotic lamps that threw intricate shadows on the walls, Middle - Eastern patrons puffing languidly on their shee-shas ( water pipes ) and a waiter swaying an incense burner to and fro, perfuming the night air with a soothing scent. Ah, the perfect setting for the Arabian Nights. I was lulled into relaxation right away. After I chose a corner table, I proceeded to order a rose-scented sheesha (S$14) and mint tea (S$6.50 per pot ) . Both were good. The tea was infused with real mint leaves and the sheesha was heavenly. The night disappeared before I knew it. Read on to find out how to smoke a sheesha.
Anything to suit the balmy weather of Singapore. There's no air-conditioner in this place, only huge bay windows to permit fresh air to blow in and lazy, rotating fans. Are you an owl? $15 a jug on weekends..hmm.. by bpacker Ok, this is the other microbrewery I'm talking about. It's not exactly my favourite joint but I've heard enough from my friends to know that the best English ale can be found here. Ale? Ok, for those of us who not quite familiar with beer terms, it's simply English beer . Compared to the commonly -drunk lager ( eg Tiger beer ) , the taste of ale is more hearty, robust and fruity. I don't have a particular preference for ale as I'm more of a lager-loving gal but go for the indian pale ale while you're in Brewerkz. It's their best-selling beer and it goes well with the steaks. I was here on a Sunday and as luck would have it, they have a special at $15 for a jug of Pale Ale. Hic! Bottoms Up..
Strictly Casual. There's a pool table here and lots of tv for you to watch soccer. This joint closes at 2am on weekends. Are you an owl? Love venturing out at night? Click on b'packer's page, for more night haunts. Leave a Comment

Cherry Kriek, Trappist Beer, etc etc by bpacker Havin' drunk myself silly in Bruges, I hankered for good Belgium Beer when I returned. Imagine my joy when I found a local watering hole that served over 20 varieties of beer! Yup, the beers range from a serious beers (Rochefort) with an alcohol content of 11% to a fruity beers ( Cherry Kriek ) with just 3% alcohol. My recommendation would be a dark brew, " Chimay Blue" . It's served in a chalice-shaped glass , just like how you'll see it in Belgium and it has faint whiff of spice in it. If you're just drinking, you might want to just sit at the wood-panelled bar inside or socialise standing, with the de rigeur bottle of beer in your hand.
Casual chic. Very popular with the expat crowd. Are you an owl? Love venturing out at night? Click on b'packer's page, for more night haunts. Coffee and jazz at Chihuly by bpacker It's pretty tough to find a decent joint in Singapore for good coffee and jazz. Oftentimes, you'll be in a smoke-filled joint where you'll be forced to order a nasty tasting alcoholic drink with an umbrella. Well, the Chihuly is an exception, apart from the nice ambience, the decent service and the really cool Jazz ensemble, the java here is excellent! Apart from the smooth tasting blends, the drink also comes with a silver tray of cream, melted sugar sticks and loads of shaved chocolate. Delicious... Oh yes, and the band, they do a good rendition "Brasil' or any Cuban Jazz piece
This chi-chi joint has a strict dress code so they won't admit you if you're dressed like a band member from Guns and Roses. What that means is no frayed jeans, uncovered shoes and flip flops. Sigh! Dark and White Bier by bpacker If you have a fondness for chilled, fresh beer like me, head for the two microbreweries in town. There's the English joint, Brewerkz at Clark Quay and of course, there's this other German joint, P. Brauhaus in Millenia Walk. Of the two, I'm more keen on the German joint as I have a fondness for their dark brew as well their cheesy bavarian sausages. Having live music over there also helps biase my opinions. Yeah, this is a cool place to hang out and on weekends, this joint opens till 2am. Great for owls like me. Interesting tip :If you fancy sampling some of what Paulaner has to offer, pop by for Sunday brunch, which, for around S$40 includes free-flow of freshly brewed Munich lager.
It's a fav with the local yuppies on Friday nights, so don't be surprised if you see lots of people dressed in their power suits on TGIF. Are you an owl? Love venturing out at night? Clark Quay by kyoub Clark Quay has an assortment of shops and restaurants that are mostly closed in the daytime but are very energetic at night. There is free entertainment most nights at the central gazebo. Several food stalls remain open until very early in the morning. It is said to bring a Bride and Groom good luck to have a photo taken here. There is also a flea market here on Sunday from 9 to 5. Over 70 stalls selling junk and collectables.
