Beautiful Teak Bridges woven into a swamp by bpacker Not many people know this, but the largest mangrove swamp island in the world is only about an hour away from Singapore. If you really dig nature and keen to visit this place, you'll need to drive about an hour to Kukup, M'sia to take a look at it. Alternatively, if you don't feel like leaving Singapore, you could pop over the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve in Kranji to take a look. This protected park is home to 200+ indigenous plants and a temporary stop for migratory birds in Asia. And the best thing of it all, you don't have to wade thru' the bog to look at all these, there is a beautiful walkway weaving thru' the whole length of the swamp. Useful Details Address 301 Neo Tiew Crescent Singapore 718925 Opening Hours 7.30am to 7.00pm on weekdays 7.00am to 7.00pm on Sundays & Public Holidays Leave a Comment

I thought I saw a birdie... by bpacker Now, what do you think about letting a bird decide your fate? Well, If you happen to be keen, curious and maybe a little gullible while in Singapore, pop down to Little India. You'll find the fortune teller with 2 cute little parakeets trained to choose a card from among a deck. Of course, the human owner will interpret your fortune, not the bird, duh! Where:A little corner, ground floor, Tekka Market, close to the bus stop. Leave a Comment

Mount Faber Park by bpacker High on a hill above Telok Blangah, lies Mount Faber Park. Despite the name, it's a hill really, but it gives a fantastic view of Singapore from there. Most people go there to scare the living daylights out of themselves by grabbing a ride to Sentosa (cable car ). But there's no need to do that really, you can walk around the place, admire the scenery and enjoy the beautiful flora and fauna.Click on the link below for a detailed map/location of the park and the "how to get there" stuff Leave a Comment

by bpacker Come November, the Muslim quarter of Singapore comes to life with beautiful street lights and night bazaars selling delicious dates, traditional cakes, clothes and other stuff. Some people call this the alternative to Orchard Road Christmas Light-up. To me, this a better and more authentic choice that allows you to see more interesting sights and sounds compared to the one in town... Venue : Geylang Serai Time : From dusk till late at night Date: Nov 2004 Leave a Comment

Bar Bar on a Safari in Singapore.. by bpacker Don't bother rubbing your eyes, you read me correctly. Wild, Asian Elephants have been spotted in Singapore, well, in offshore Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong to be more exact. Now if you're thinking I'm telling you a 1930's esque story, I'm not. This happened in 1990! To read more about it, pop over to my Pulau Ubin page. Leave a Comment

I'm not albino mate', just a sunblock user... by bpacker OK, I admit I got this shot with my optical zoom function camera. But honestly, I was awestruck when I saw this magnificent white creature with blue eyes. I stood there transfixed for a little while as the Bengal Tiger gave a mighty stare in return. What a beauty and a rare one too! Only one out of 10,000 tigers will be born white with blue or green eyes and the S'pore Zoological Gardens got not one but three of these creatures! Pop down to the zoo if you're keen to look at these white beauties.Click the website for more details. Leave a Comment

Far East Square, Line Dancing by bpacker Singapore is probably the most Westernised country in Asia. It's so in-tune with the American culture that we're kept up to date with Bush-Kerry debates ad nausuem . But politics aside, it has even accepted American line-dancing as a pop culture of its own. Line Dancing is currently in vogue with the older folks in Singapore as they're about the only sane folks who will listen to country and western blues. That's not all, these folks will meet every weekend in their cowboy hats, boots, jeans, checkered shirts and dance their hearts out in various parts of Singapore. To check out the action, pop down to Far East Square ( near Chinatown ) to watch at least a hundred folks dancing in co-ordination to the latest and most depressin' country blues. Music aside, it's good, clean fun. The folks will even teach you how to dance if you allow them to. Leave a Comment

Posing, History Museum, S'pore by bpacker Unknown to many, the Museum have revamped their frumpy image and trying to project themselves as a happening place. Pop down over to the temporary museum at Robertson Walk and you'll be surprised to find all kinds of fun activities and programmes for kids. Eg. A 2-day tour that takes kids on archaelogical digs around the island. Click on the link to find out more. Photo note: I couldn't resist taking a picture of this family as they posed for the museum photographer after dressing up in ethnic costumes. Leave a Comment

Darjeeling tea for you, darling? by bpacker If looking at Wild Monkeys is your cup of tea, why not have a literal cuppa with them? Now, before you're thinking I'm pulling a fast one on you, I'm not. The local zoo offers a unique breakfast opportunity with these hairy lovelies (Orang Utans) at their restaurant. Of course, if you do decide to go, you don't have to share your waffles with them. A seperate fruit basket will be given to you, just don't gorge on the monkey's breakfast. A Bug's Life...a bug 1 day, a dish another day.. by bpacker Ok, Ok , this should be in my restaurant guide but off the beaten path means something that is unconventional right? Well, eating deep-fried scorpions, ants and water bugs is not something you'd expect in urban Singapore but somewhere in the FEAR FACTOR studios in Hollywood right?Well, there are no prizes for eating these delicacies because some locals believe that your health will improve when you indulge in this gory delight. If you want to have a go at it, pop down to the Imperial Garden Restaurant ( next to Raffles Hotel ) or any of the Thai eateries at Golden Mile Shopping Centre at Beach Road ( water bugs). I bet you'll have an experience you'll never forget.. The Imperial Garden Restaurant is at 3rd Floor, Metropole Hotel 41, Seah Street, Singapore 188396 Leave a Comment
