Book Swapping at New 7th Storey Hotel

by joysweet

If you are staying at NSS, and you always bring a book or guidebook (like me) when you travel, you can swap books at their library. Just arrange the bookswap with their reception counter. The time i was there - they had several guidebooks on australia which i'm guessing were left by backpackers who were staying there. Several English and German books (of popular authors) as well.

HSBC Treetop Walk

by y_lyn

The first of its kind in Singapore and in the region, this free-standing suspension bridge connects the two highest points (Bukit Peirce and Bukit Kalang) in MacRitchie and offers a bird’s eye view of the community of plants and animals that live in the forest canopy. The total length of the walkway is about 250m and its height from the forest floor varies, with the highest point at 27m. Opening Hours:Tue to Fri: 9.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m.Sat, Sun and Public Holidays: 8.30 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. Note: The HSBC TTW is closed on Mondays except public holidays for maintenance and research. ~ 3 April 2005 (Will revisit it on 27 Jan 2007)

MacRitchie Reservoir

by y_lyn

I took a 3 hours hike here at MacRitchie with my students. We took route 3 and route 4, reached the treetop walk near the first hour then slowly hike back to the carpark, passing by Jelutong tower, golf link and saw a whole lot of monkeys along the way. We also saw a pair of couples holding their wedding here and having their photoshoot.Note: MONKEYS... DO NOT FEED THEMThe monkeys get enough of the right diet from the forest, so please do not feed them. Refrain from bringing food to the nature reserves or eating in front of the monkeys. (My colleague hang the packet coffee and tea at the back of his bag, and guess what, he got attacked by the monkeys. All the coffee and tea was spilled all over the place!)Dispose of your litter into the monkey-proof bins provided or take your litter out of the reserves with you. ~ 27 Jan 07

Tree Top walk at McRitchie Reservoir

by love2wander

Though Singapore may lack wide country side, there are some virgin forests preserved for water catchment and recreation as well. Recently the HSBC Bank had sposored the building of a tree top walk deep in McRitchie Reservoir. The walk is closed on Mondays and everyday by 5pm.If you have half a day, a good starting point is the main entrance of McRitchie Reservoir Park at Thomson Road. Allow yourself 2 hrs walk before reaching the spot. There are 2 paths leading to the tree top walk - the west (to the left of the reservoir) is pleasant with board walks and passing the edge of a golf course. The other to the right of the reservoir takes you through jungle tracks. Both tracks are 5-6 KM long before you reach the tree top walk. So put on your walking shoes, bring along a sweat tower and drinking water. An easier access is by taking taxi to the Island Country Club at Venus Drive (off Upper...

An elevated walk through the jungle

by vyxxyn

This suspension bridge is a new project developed by HSBC. This bank is a major supporter in nature conservation activities in Singapore. Free entry (donations optional). For donations as little as S$2 you can obtain a spiral-bound booklet as a souvenir. This "Treetop Walk" is situated inside the Central Catchment Area, a nature reserve. It's an educational experience, with facts and biodata in plaques hung along the sides of the walkway. Not recommended for people who have fear of heights, have knee problems (LOTS of steps to climb), and not recommended during/before rainfall. Most nature-loving tourists visit Bukit Timah Hill and Pulau Ubin, but are probably unaware of this monument right on Singapore island. There are 2 points of entry, both are at either location of Singapore Island Country Club - Sime Road (Off Adam Road, Bukit Timah)- Venus Drive (Off Upper Thomson Road)I...

See Nature: Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

by xuessium

The last bit of primary tropical rainforest in Singapore is hiding in this last bastion of nature on main island Singapore. Unfortunately, it is facing an uncertain fate as development is slowly encroaching in on its parameters. Already a highway has slit the nature reserve into 2 parts. Come and mingle with the local inhabitants (the monkeys! BUT PLEASE DO NOT FEED THEM!!), see tall Seraya buttress trees, rattan vines, Macaranga trees which ants and plant co-exist, lovely passionfruit climbers and stumble upon the occasional fauna. The tip of the nature reserve is Bukit Timah Hill at 167m above sea level, the tallest natural structure in Singapore. You can choose to take a slow walk up on tarmac roads or climb up to the summit along any of the nature trails. Bring lots of water, a towel and a change of clothes (optional).Getting there: Take the MRT to Newton (N4) station, then take TIBS...

Wan Qing Yuan aka Sun Yat Sen Villa

by xuessium

This is quite strictly for Chinese history buffs. The villa is tucked away in one corner along Balestier Road. This is where Sun Yat Sen, father of modern China came to hide, regroup and recuperate for a short period while escaping the Qing Dynasty government he was trying to overthrow. His association with this villa eventually led to the building being declared a National Monument and a memorial hall built to commemorate the great man. Walk through the many galleries highlighting his work and his efforts for a democratic China, and see how his work eventually crumbled and disintegrated in the hands of the very people who championed the cause of democracy. Address: 12 Tai Gin Road, Singapore 327874.Getting there: BUS: Take Singapore Bus Service (SBS) 21, 130, 131, 139, 145 or 186 to Balestier Road. (Bus 130 can be taken from Bugis MRT)For SBS 139 and 145, alight at the 3rd bus stop...

2 Unique Mosques: Malabar & Hajjah Fatimah Mosques

by xuessium

The 2 mosques are within walking distances (15 minutes) from each other.Entry into the mosques is free and open to non-believers of Islam as well as ladies visitors. Please do respect the sensitivities of Islam. All mosques have prayers on Friday; best to avoid visiting that day.MALABAR MOSQUEStanding at the intersection of Victoria Street and Jalan Sultan Road, this little blue mosque stands out by virtue of its beautiful blue tiles. It's also known as the Golden Dome Mosque. Building this mosque started in the late 50s by the Malabari Community who were headed by the Malabar Muslim Jama-ath (Association establised in 1927). The mosque was finally declared opened on 24th January 1963 by the Yang di-Pertuan Negara, Encik Yusof bin Ishak, the first President of Singapore. The blue tiles gleam beautifully in the sun and it's well worth a visit for avid photographers.Getting there is easy...

LOWER PEIRCE NATURE TRAIL

by xuessium

Quite an "unheralded' part of the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. Away from the mass crowd at MacRitchie, this nature trail is really off the beaten track. Take bus 167 to Upper Thomson Road, alighting when you see signs for Lower Peirce Reservoir or when you see the road signs for Casuarina Drive. The entrance of the trail is hidden along Casuarina Drive. Here, the crowd is smaller, if there is any, and you more or less will have the forest to yourself on a weekday. There are a number of trails here, showcasing the vast diversity of life in a secondary tropical rainforest. At the end of the trail is the scenic Lower Peirce Reservoir, when some folks come to fish, to exercise or just have some private moments to each other. Bring water and snacks for a light picnic if desired. Another plus, there's a row of shophouses outside Casuarina Drive of which one of them - "Casuarina Curry" sells...
