Singapore Philatelic Museum

by xuessium

This is one of the museums in Singapore and honestly, it will only appeal to a specific group of visitors. Stamp lovers - this may be a stop you may wish to add on your itinerary since this museum is one of its kind in Southeast Asia. Walk through the various galleries of exhibits to learn more about philatelic in this part of the world. Entry fee is S$3 for adults and S$2 for kids. The museum is housed in a heritage building so the architecture is itself an item to appreciate.Getting there:It's very near Fort Canning, and is just behind the Armenian Church. Nearest MRT is City Hall with a 10-15 minutes walk.

Fort Pasir Panjang-Labrador Park-The Lost Tunnel

by xuessium

This is where Labrador Park (off Pasir Panjang Road, near PSA Building) is today - a favourite spot for wedding photos. Some historians claimed that the British dug a tunnel (among the many tunnels in the park) connecting Labrador point to modern-day Sentosa (back in the days when Sentosa was just a military set-up). Documentaries had traced the tunnel to its entrance on the Labrador Park side. It is now sealed up. It is believed that the tunnel is now flooded and not accessible hence the need to seal the tunnel up for the safety of the public.New : Guided tours of the the now refurbished war tunnels are now conducted daily from 10am - 7pm (last entrance at 6pm. Call 65-6339 6833 for more information. Also check out the upmarket al fresco "The Olive Ristorante @ Labrador Park" for delicious Italian-inspired cuisine.Getting there : Pasir Panjang Road - services 10, 30, 51, 143 and 176....

Kent Ridge Park & The Canopy Walk

by xuessium

You will need some sort of transport to get here. Off South Buona Vista Road. This was the site of some of the fiercest fighting between local volunteers and the invading Japanese during WW2. Today, there are plaques commerating the brave fallen, as well as breathtaking views of the Strait of Singapore, where you can catch views of some of Singapore's southern isles. There is also a less heralded canopy walk, about 2 storeys high, stretching for about 50m. This is much more accessible and more friendly to the general public than the one at MacRitchie Reservoir. It is certainly less strenuous. Why no one is here is puzzling. Families can push prams and guide kids on this canopy walk with ease. There are signs along the boardwalk pointing out botany tips. You will walk by Wild Cinnamon, Tiup Tiup, Tembusu and Rubber trees as well as Dillenia shrubs while drinking in great views of the...

PULAU UBIN: See Singapore in the 50s & 60s!

by xuessium

Come see Singapore trapped in the 50s and 60s. No tall rise buildings, no heavy traffic and no folks wearing collared shirts and high heels rushing to work in the CBD! Just steel roof houses, lots of nature and plenty of ruggedness! Folks come here to cycle, enjoy nature, bask in the sun and enjoy seafood. The tracks are well marked these days and there is now a ranger station on the island. Toilets and rest pavilions were also built along the tracks. Come and explore Ubin with its 4 abandoned quarries which have become "lakes". Hunt for wild Durian, Rambutan and Morinda (Noni) trees. Camp by the beaches. Experience old "kampong" village life - there is one Chinese and 1 Malay kampong on the island. Explore Chek Jawa and its complex ecosystem - the vast sand beds exposed at very low tide to yield star fishes, molluscs and clams. Stumble upon abandoned buildings supposedly to be haunted....

Play with your toys! MINT & MOST Museum of Toys

by xuessium

PREPARE TO LAUNCH ON A JOURNEY OF REDISCOVERY!MINTThe private collection of Chang Ya Fa, who started collecting the toys when he was just 6 yrs old. The S$2M 5-storeys high museum houses fractions of his 50000 pieces collection. The exhibit is estimated to be worth S$5 million. The most expensive piece I saw was worth a cool US$20000 and the oldest toy in the collection is dated 1840.At the time of my visit (circa Jun 2006), the museum collection only comprises 3% of his collection (as advised by the tour guide) and it was already astounding. We caught glimpses of rare collections of Popeye the Sailor, Felix the Cat, superheroes such as Batman & Robin, Superman and even pop and royalty paraphenelia from The Beatles and the 1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The Most Popular Park in Singapore

by bpacker

High on a hill above Telok Blangah, lies Mount Faber Park. Despite the name, it's a hill really, but it gives a fantastic view of Singapore from there. Most people go there to scare the living daylights out of themselves by grabbing a ride to Sentosa (cable car ). But there's no need to do that really, you can walk around the place, admire the scenery and enjoy the beautiful flora and fauna.Click on the link below for a detailed map/location of the park and the "how to get there" stuff

Getting Up Close and Personal to a White Tiger

by bpacker

OK, I admit I got this shot with my optical zoom function camera. But honestly, I was awestruck when I saw this magnificent white creature with blue eyes. I stood there transfixed for a little while as the Bengal Tiger gave a mighty stare in return. What a beauty and a rare one too! Only one out of 10,000 tigers will be born white with blue or green eyes and the S'pore Zoological Gardens got not one but three of these creatures! Pop down to the zoo if you're keen to look at these white beauties.Click the website for more details.

Farm-mart is a place where farmers and agricultural traders can promote their products in their own module. Each module is a miniature plot, representing individual and specialty farms in other parts of Singapore. Farmers can bring their best produce to the mini plot located in each of the module thus making it a trading center. Not only can they sell and promote their own produce, they can also make it a showcase to display the technology employed. The activities at these mini units / plots will cover many items ranging from vegetable farm, local seasonal fruits, flowers, horticultural crafts, pet stations, hobby fishes and many more.
