Jurong Bird Park - Brilliant

by Mikebb

Our morning visit to the birdpark was one of the highlights of our Singapore holiday. The park is well laid out with easy walkways, good signage to the exhibits and magnificent landscaping. There were birds of all shapes, sizes and colours and what appealed to us was how close visitors could get to the enclosures and displays. The entertainment at the Fiji Hawk Walk was first class as the handlers showed the birds and then allowed them"free flight".The African Waterfall Aviary is not to be missed and there is a cafe on site where you can take refreshment prior to walking through this exhibit.Admission is Sg$18 Adults and Sg$9 Child with additional Sg$5 (Child Sg$2.50) for the Panorail ride.

Chek Jawa (Marine, Wildlfe etc)

by Cathy&Gary

Chek Jawa is a 100 hectare wetlands area at the south eastern tip of Pulau Ubin which is an island just off the north eastern coast of Singapore. The area is very unique due to its many different beaches, lagoons, mangroves and forests. There is a boardwalk that runs the length of the coast where you can see many different species of plants and marine life. There is also a fantastic 7 storey viewing tower for bird watching etc and the visitor centre with a viewing jetty. The best time to visit is at low tide.To get there take a bumboat from the Changi jetty which is near the Changi Village hawker centre. The boat will take you to Ubin jetty. Then walk from the jetty down to the road and there will be plenty of drivers to take you to Chek Jawa. There is no need to book and you just come back the same way!

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

by Cathy&Gary

This reserve is very famous of the huge variety of migrating birds which come from as far away as Siberia before making their way to Australia to escape winter. For such a small country Singapore has over 400 different varieties of birds and Sungei Buloh Wetlands is a very important roosting ground as well as being one of the few remaining mangrove areas in Singapore. The wetlands and park areas are very beautiful so don't forget the camera and binoculars. There are plenty of places to sit and long boardwalk walking trails through the reserve. On weekends there are free guided tours.Sungei Buloh is also very popular for locals wanting to get away from it all, so you will see many people having picnics etc. If your interested in fish you will not be disappointed as there are hundreds of mud skippers in the mangroves and little crabs running up the tree's! There are monitor lizards,...

Lower Peirce Reservoir. This reservoir is one of the oldest in Singapore, there is a 900 metre boardwalk where you will see huge trees that are over 100 years old.Upper Peirce Reservoir. Here you will find a beautiful 6 hectare park overlooking the reservoir. The park is very busy with locals on the weekends so best time is during the week if your looking for absolute peace and quiet.Lower Seletar reservoir.Visitors are surprised that there are so many reservoirs on the island of Singapore. This one is located in the north east of Singapore in 1986. Sailing and sports fishing is also allowed at the reservoir. There is a lovely park with bench seating, toilets, a jetty, shelters and jogging tracks.Upper Seletar reservoir. Here you will find another beautiful 15 hectare park with a viewing tower. MacRitchie Reservoir

by Cathy&Gary

There are plenty of beautiful green park areas in Singapore, I cannot understand why people say Singapore is only good for a stopover. Get out of Orchard Rd and explore a bit, you might be surprised at what you find!!MacRitchie Reservoir. This reservoir was completed in 1877 and the virgin forest around it has been protected as a water catchment reserve.During the war the Japanese built a Shinto Shrine in the middle of the forest but now only the ruins remain. There are fantastic walking trails and boardwalks skirting the reservoir but the biggest attraction is the Tree Top Walk a 250 metre free standing suspension bridge. The views of the reservoirs and rainforest are spectacular. But be prepared for a long walk to the bridge, depending on how fit you are it could take a couple of hours!!Getting There.MacRitchie: off Lornie RoadMacRitchie: SBS Transit bus 132 or SMRT bus 167 from Orchard...

Fort Canning Park (Parks & Havens)

by Cathy&Gary

Fort Canning is a beautiful park that overlooks Orchard Road. The park has a history dating back to the 14th century where relics have been uncovered linking it to Malay settlers. It is also believed that at the foot of the hill lie the remains of the last Malay King of Singapore.During 1889 a fort was built and was used by the British Army until occupation by the Japanese. After the war it went back under the control of the British until 1963 when it was handed over to the Singapore Military. Now Fort Canning Park is a lovely oasis away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Singapore. The beautiful lawns now host concerts, the Spice Gardens are a must see and of course the Battle Box, the largest and most up to date at the time underground command centre of the British Malaya Command Headquarters during World War II.So if you are interested in World War 11, this place is highly...

East Coast Park (Parks & Havens)

by Cathy&Gary

East Coast Park is the largest park in Singapore and is built on reclaimed land with a sandy man made beach.Activities such as bowling, cycling, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, and roller-blading can be enjoyed at this park. East Coast Park is very busy on weekends with families can having picnic's and bbq's. Other leisure attractions include the East Coast Tennis Centre, cable skiing and the Laguna Golf Course. Hire a tandem bike and go riding along one of the many bike tracks. The main reason we go here is for the food as there are just so many good cafes, seafood restaurants and bars.Directions: Take SBS Bus 16, alight at Marine Terrace and use the underpass to cross the expressway.

World's Largest Freshwater Reservoir In The City

by xuessium

This arose from one of Singapore's previous Prime Minister's vision to trap a pool of water to solve the country's perennial water problem...and 20 years in the making, voila, the world's largest freshwater reservoir in a city. The Barrage effectively created a catchment area that trapped water from 5 Singaporean rivers and with it, a ready body of water for recreational purposes. The Barrage operates with 9 gates, releasing water whenever necessary into the open seas beyond if there are excess rain water in the reservoir. However, the site serves beyond its water needs. It is also fast becoming a favourite picnic spot among Singaporean as the proximity to the open sea meant lots of cooling sea breezes to cool down from the oppressive heat and lots of open space to fly kites. There are also a handful of cafes/restaurants on the spot should you wish to tuck into some chow or grab a...

Other than having a handful of remaining habitants, this area of land is also used as a training area by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).It is accessible by two old disused roads known as Lorong Mayang and Lorong Akar linked to Yishun Ave 6.Nearest MRT: Yishun
