Added to the map signboards located at many places, there are also markers along the various trails or paths, especially at the intersections. With all these in place, it is really very easy to move around on the island.

There are many shelters along the various paths which you can sit down and rest if you are tired. These shelters are also very good if it is raining. These shelters are known as huts by various names e.g. Murai Hut, Beberek Hut, Belatok Hut (refer to the map on the brochure which you can obtain at the visitor's centre).

There is a visitor's centre at the main village just on the right of the jetty as you enter the island. This visitor's centre contain brochures and other information which will guide you along the island. There is also a police post located here.

The Head of the village of Pulau Ubin has been around for many years and his house is located on the east of the main village along one of the main roads of the island. Sometimes his house will sell drinks, and you can ask his permission to visit his house which contains many old and memorable photographs, including some which he took together with famous people and politicians of Singapore.

The Wayang Stage comes alive during the Chinese Seventh Lunar Month or Hungry Ghost Festival.

The Chinese traditionally believed that at this time, the gates of Hell are opened allowing spirits to roam among us. To appease spirits, especially those who are lonely and have no living relatives, various traditional activities are held. "Hell Money" is burnt and offerings of food and other items are left as gifts for the spirits.

Wayang or Chinese opera performances are held, with empty seats left at the front for the spirits. This is not a special performance put up for the public, but a part of the way of life of the residents of Ubin.
