Season 'Live' Seafood (Hai Wei Huo Hai Xian): Most Atmospheric joint for Seafood

by bpacker Updated Feb 14, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Contrary to belief, the best place to eat Chinese seafood in Singapore is not at the UDMC centre at East Coast but by a little coastal village in Pulau Ubin. Picture yourself sitting by a makeshift table under a tree, sipping on coconut juice and feeling the seabreeze running thru' your hair. On top of that, you'll get to enjoy fresh sea critters at rustic prices.

Favorite Dish: There's lots of seafood joints near the jetty so head for the one joint that is situated just by the waters . For about US$24 in total, hubby and I had a huge and scrumptious seafood dinner...

    1) Succulent big prawns, steamed whole, whiskers and all, in ginger and their juices.

    2) Crabs, fried with spicy black pepper sauce and spring onions. This was particularly gd as the crab flesh was firm to the taste.

    3) Tofu Seafood Soup.

    4) Thai coconut juice in their shells with plump, juicy white flesh. The coconuts here are way better than the ones found on the mainland. A lot cheaper too. One coconut cost about US$0.90 on average.

Pretty good, considering, that the portions were huge. A similar meal on the mainland would have cost us at least US$36 or so.

    Private homes: Cold drinks

    by SWFC_Fan Written Dec 28, 2005

There is only one main village on the island of Pulau Ubin, and this is the only place to get something to eat.

However, a few private homes outside of the main village have signs out the front advertising cold drinks for sale to visitors.

I stopped off at one such home and purchased a can of ice-tea (served straight out of an ice bucket) for just S$1.

Further down into Ubin Town near the Wayang Stage, you can get fresh coconuts.

Perfect thirst quencher after a day out on Ubin.

Dont bother picking up those coconuts that fell from the tree and onto the road;p

Ubin First Stop Restaurant: My Most Frequent Restaurant in Pulau Ubin!

by kelnsha Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are several inexpensive restaurant and informal eateries near the jetty, one the best is Ubin First Stop Restaurant where a seafood meal will cost you around SGD30.

They are opened from 1100 to 2000hrs (Thursday to Tuesday including Public Holidays).

Favorite Dish: I do not have my favourite dish because we went there for late lunch after an organised tresure hunt event around the island.

Pulau Ubin is famous for its fresh and delicious seafood.

We ordered pepper Crab $28, Sambal Sotong $12, Beancurd $10, Stir Fry Venison $10.

There are a few restaurants over there so we went for the most crowded one.

Ubin One Stop Restaurant: One of the restaurants at Ubin

    by y_lyn Updated Apr 22, 2007

We had our lunch at this restaurant during our recent visit. We ordered only hor fun and fried rice which cost $4 each. Food is so so.. nothing much to comment about. This restaurant also serves seafood and other interesting local specialities including wild boar. Facing the restauraut is the wayang (Chinese opera) stage.

    Restaurant with sea view

    by K2NG Updated May 25, 2012

Upon recommendation by one of our friends, we headed for this restaurant by the coast. I remember it has a white tent and covers a relatively big area compared to other restaurants. There are live seafood inside tanks to attract curious onlookers. It is near one part of the road that constricts to a narrow width. And directly opposite is one wooden house that has a wall painting of a chinese girl in seductive pose.

We had 5 dishes, 1 large portion Fried rice, 1 large portion Hor Fun, 6 plates of white rice and 7 can drinks, and all added up to about $85. The food is not too bad although this friend who recommended said it was not as good as the last time he had a couple of years ago.

Along the many trails of Pulau Ubin, there are drink stores conveniently located along the journey so you to get a drink, which is necessary due to the hot and humid tropical weather.
