Chek Jawa is one of Singapore’s richest ecosystems with a unique natural area where six major habitats meet and mix. Slated for land reclamation in 1992, the wonderful secrets of Chek Jawa were unveiled only in December 2000. As public attention was drawn to this site, thousands of Singaporeans flocked to visit this wetland treasure. At the same time, appeals from nature lovers and the general public led to a review of its reclamations plans. After carefully considering all public submissions and extensive consultations with scientific experts and relevant government agencies, it was announced in 2001 that reclamation works would be deferred as long as Pulau Ubin is not required for development.
Measures have been put in place to manage access to the intertidal flats at Chek Jawa. Visits to Chek Jawa must be pre-booked. This may inconvenience visitors but is necessary, as large numbers of visitors will put a strain on the fragile ecosystem.

You will pass by the Village Chief's House as you are cycling along Jalan Ubin towards Mamam Beach. You can stop and visit the place. They have an ostrich behind the house and several other kinds of birds.
Sad to say, due to bird flu around the Southeast Asian region, the Government had recently enforced strict control of the rearing of chickens and other birds. His favourite pet ostrich have been taken away from the house.

It is very difficult to find houses built on stilts. If you visit a kelong you will see them.
This house is now a storage place for the bicycle rental shop and a generator.
But its an icon of Pulau Ubin. You wont miss it if you take a left turn from the jetty.

There are 5 Quarries on Ubin.
Ketam, Kekek, Ubin, Pekan and Balai Quarry.
You can have a view of the Balai Quarry near the Beberek Hut.
But pls do not climb over the fence as u may fall into the deep quarry.
There is a fine of $1,000 if you trepass into the land.

Brake lightly when you go down the slope. Some slopes are very steep or rocky.
We witnessed accidents on this rocky steep path.
So pls drive slowly and carefully for the sake of your safety and others.

Beberk Hut is located in between Chek Jawa and Ubin Town.
Cycle all the way down and it will lead u to Ubin Town.
Do be very careful when you cycle to Chek Jawa because the path is not covered by cement and it is very steep.
Many get injured along this path. We were eye witness to an injury here.
Another injury happended furthere down the path where two students were rushed to hospital by the police coast guard where one sustained a head injury and the other a knee cap injury.

These pair of white parrots were kept by the owner of the Orchid Garden.
Due to bird flu the Ostrich was sent to the Jurong Bird Park.
The owner was glad that he could still keep some of his pets in his farm.

Found this private jetty along the swarm of the Orchid Garden.
The sampans (small boats) belongs to the owner of the Orchid Garden.
It was a peaceful sight with the coconut trees swaying and the greeneries from the mangrove swarm.

If you cant find those wild boars running wild on the island near chek jawa where do u find one on the island?
Head to the Orchird Garden where the owner still rear a wild boar.
The wild boar is smelly and make so much noise. And you see the saliva dripping. YUCKS!
Pity its neighbours, a pair of parrots and birds.

Villagers live a simpe life on this island 10 mins off Singapore.
It brings you back to Singapore in the 1960s.
The residents rely on well and generators for utilites and electricity.
Some villagers depend on farming and fishing while others set up provision store and drink stall and tourist related shops like bicycle rental and restaurants.
