    THE CRAB...with sauce
    bearnaise
    by bpacker
Update:This shop recently earned the notorious reputation of the shop with one of the rudest service staff around. So, do be prepared for those barbed comments when you visit this place for good food!

Mention butter crabs to any Singaporean and immediately, you'll see Pavlovian drools. How can we help it? This island is famous for chilli crabs and lately, butter crabs. In case you don't know what they are, picture this - whole Sri Lankan crustaceans deep fried with butter and more butter. It's a dish that will make Elvis Presley beam with delight since it's loaded with enough fat to make 10 fried peanut butter sandwiches. But honestly, the King would have loved this dish, especially the one that is served in this Ang mo Kio eatery. This place was so good that local actor, Mark Lee was spotted there. Yes, this actor was my hallmark of good food. Despite his skinny appearence, he's known to be a foodie and the last time I spotted him in Geylang, he was indulging in frog leg porridge that turned out to be heavenly . Well, this time round, he was in this eatery so I knew the food would be good. And it was. The crabs were whole, firm to the bite and succulent. Even the shells were crammed with rich, orangey creamy roe and it tasted heavenly with the butter sauce, or shall i say Bearnaise sauce? Yes, the sauce had a little twist to it and it tasted suspiciously like an emulsion of butter in egg yolks. Whatever it was, it was delicious and Mark Lee ordered the same dish.

    In order of preference:

    1)Butter Crabs of course!
    2)Crab Bee Hoon(around 1kg crab)
    3)Claypot crab soup

Each dish cost around S$10-$20. Worth every cent I assure you. Go after 9pm if you do not want to wait too long for your dishes.

  • Tofu Cheesecake in a Birdcage - Singapore
    Tofu Cheesecake in a
    Birdcage
    by bpacker,

Visual presentation counts in a Japanese dining experience, so do expect a couple of theatrics when you're dining at this new eatery in Singapore! The tofu cheesecake dessert, in particular, comes in a wooden birdcage and a wee folded crane. It was a delightful, if not amusing experience just to look at it. And when we finally decided to eat it, the cheesecake was a dream. The cheesy tofu was as light as a feather and it gelled nicely with the graham cracker base. Delicious. Read on to see me reviews on the other dishes.

I had a little soiree recently in a faux forested setting complete with delicate Japanese dishes. It was the perfect setting for a girlie dinner outing and we were delighted with all the delicious dishes that we tried. Other than the cheesecake, we had :

    1) Broiled pork cheek slices - Good, the slices of pork were tender and smokey tasting.
2)3?4? servings of sushi - The best was the soft-shelled crab and avocado sushi.
3)Kamameshi (traditional steamed seasoned rice pot) - Expect more theatrics with an egg timer put strategically on top of the rice pot. The dish was so-so. Tasted more like an upscale version of the local claypot rice.
4)Lotus root Okonomiyaki - Very good, it had a generous topping of curling bonito flakes. The lotus root added an unexpected crunch to the soft seafood pancake.

Surprisingly, the cost turned out to be minimal. Though we had a buffet of dishes among the 4 of us, it only came up to S$96.

  • Chicken Liver Yakitori, Foie Gras on a stick - Singapore
    Chicken Liver Yakitori,
    Foie Gras on a stick
    by bpacker
On a recent trip to Morioka Japan, hubby tried raw chicken liver sashimi(!) Well, let's just say that eating a spongy, bloody piece of chicken innard didn't exactly thrill him. So to 'undo' the experience, we trooped down to NANBANTEI, one of the best yakitori restaurants in town, for good ol' cooked, Japanese food. For those of you who don't know what yakitori is, it's the Japanese version of satay. Yes, delicious morsels of meat or innards skewered on a stick and grilled slowly on heated coals.

Why, the grilled Chicken Liver yakitori of course. While some of you might baulk at the though of eating innards from an animal, let me assure you that it isn't fishy tasting if it is cooked properly by experts. Nanbantei's grilled chicken liver yakitori is a case in point. What you'll get are bite-sized pieces of crispy chicken liver with soft and almost creamy interior. The taste is best described as rich and sweet as the liver is basted with savoury soya sauce. If you like foie gras, chances are, you'll like chicken liver. Other than liver yakitori, Nanbantei has other good choices. I'll recommend the the chicken meat ball, chicken gizzard yakitori. All servings come in pairs and cost about S$4-5.

  • FishBalls in Toa Payoh - Singapore
    FishBalls in Toa Payoh
    by bpacker
Now, before I tell you where the best fishball in Singapore can be found, let me tell you an old story that cracks me up each time I tell it. Now, I'm fond of bringing foreign contacts around town to sample the local delights and this time, a Mid-Westerner was in town. When I told him about fishballs, his eyes widened in disbelief and he drawled loudly, " Gee-ee! Damm fish must be big !"
No one dared laughed and a polite Asian silence ensued as I explained that fish balls were tasty things made from flour, fresh fish and salt and that they weren't part of the reproductive organs of a fish.
God help me. That was one situation I hope never to be in again.
In any case, the definitive fishball is one that is chewy, sea-tasting-fresh and a little salty. The one that is served in the heartlands of Toa Payoh has all of those luscious qualities I mentioed. Equally delicious are the succulent pork balls that together with the fishy ones. Fat and meaty with chives. Yum.
Healthy eating was definitely not on my mind as I finished the whole bowl of noodles, fish balls, meat balls topped with cubes of pork fat . Sigh, a small bowl goes for S$2.50 and the big S$3.
Go early to avoid long queues and disappointment.

Ask for the Mee-pok tah (Flat, yellow egg noodles with lotsa and lotsa of chilli, porky-lard cubes.

  • The Choc Eiffel Tower - Singapore
    The Choc Eiffel Tower
    by bpacker
This has to be THE ultimate chocolate indulgence in Singapore. Giant Chocolate Fondues in the shape of the Eiffel Tower, 20 distinct chocolatey creations of every kind, ranging from fudgey cookies to cream- covered chocolate cake. Ooh, the list goes on.
While you may think this is a too-sweet over-indulgent buffet, you can't be further from the truth. Each chocolate creation is distinct in terms of taste, sweetness, richness and bitterness. For example, the creamy chocolate ganache might contain a hint of orange citrus while the heady scent of coffee might permeate your senses when you bite into an expresso coffee cake. Hmmm..doesn't that make your water already?

The Chocolate Buffet is available at the Fullerton Hotel from 8.00pm to 11.00pm, at S$28 per person or S$36 with a glass of wine.

Why, the chocolate fondue of course! Who can resist a fountain of flowing Valrhona Chocolate lava in the shape of the Eiffel Tower? I must have spent the whole night dipping strawberries, melons and other delicious fruit in that fountain

Further note: This buffet is highly popular, make your reservations before going!

The Garlic Restaurant: For the Love of Garlic

  • Garlic Ice Cream ! - Singapore
    Garlic Ice Cream !
    by bpacker
The moment I think of the GARLIC, I recall a funny incident which actually happened to my hubby's Korean counterparts... Now, those kimchi loving souls were half-starved to death in Paris. Everything in the gastronomic capital of the world tasted bad, bad, bad to them! They were in need of food, real food.
Kimchi, Galbi, Samgye tang, even a tube of Gochujang(chilli paste) would taste like manna to them now. So, it was nothing short of a miracle when they found a Korean eatery in Paris!

    God had saved them.

They eagerly ordered Galbi (BBQ pork) and ate bulbs after bulbs of whole, raw garlic with much relish to make up for the days of suffering. Satiated, they burped and made their way to the airport. Now, as they made their way there, the garlic stirred, boiled and fermented in their stomachs So it was little surprise that when they reached the airport, they were a walking olfactory nightmare.

Everywhere they went, people held their noses and staggered backwards. When they reached the customs, the officer almost fainted. When she recovered, she gave them a GALLIC scolding for the GARLIC and asked them ( more politely than I what I am going to say ) ..whether they intended to board the plane smelling like the devil's arse. The Koreans nodded meekly and brushed their teeth afterwards.

Now, hubby was glad to hear this story from the horses' mouth. Quietly, he just thanked his lucky stars he was not with them. If not, he would have passed out many times over. But alas for him, his wife decided to go to a garlic restaurant in S'pore not long after the incident. He got rather alarmed when she ordered many garlic dishes and garlic ice-cream for dessert!

Ah, you must be wondering what garlic ice-cream tasted like, right? Let's just say that the caramelised specks of garlic on top of the ice cream didn't go too well with the dessert. Otherwise, the plesantly piquant-tasting cold cream went rather well with my palate. For S$3.50 per scoop, I can't really complain. It was small price to pay for a gastronomic adventure. The rest of the dishes were nondescript, despite the strong emphasis on the odourous bulb. I went for a concert at the Esplanade after this and did not receive any funny looks from the patrons.

  • Totemo Ooishii! Curry, Rice and Fukujinzuka - Singapore
    Totemo Ooishii! Curry, Rice
    and Fukujinzuka
    by bpacker
If there is ever a famous fusion Japanese cuisine, it has to be Japanese curry. Unlike the orginal Indian curry, Japanese curry is thicker in consistency and sweet, hardly spicy. This delicious curry has a cult following all over the world and Singapore is no exception. Yeah, I'm one of those cult members .

I remembered the first time I tasted Japanese curry. It was bitterly cold in Tokyo and rain was pelting hard on the streets of Shinjuku. But I was snug inside a little eatery, feasting on a delicious plate of pork curry that was so different from the curries I tasted. The memory lingered.
So when a specialty Japanese curry house opened in Stamford rd, I just had to try it . It was every bit as good, if not better. The curry was more spicy , I suppose to cater to the Singaporean palate, the pork chunks succulent and the gravy, delicious...
I talked to the restaurant manager later and found out that the gravy was unique as the chef made his own sauce out of pureed vegetables such as potatoes, carrots and surprisingly, fruit! Now, what kind of fruit I wondered...no wonder it tasted sweet. My curry dish also had a side serving of Japanese red pickles known as Fukujinzuka but I since I hated pickled veg and anything in a garish red colour, I left it alone. Despite the pickle, I concluded that this Japanese curry was the best I've tried so far . Yup, better than the one served at the basement of Liang Court and a certain eatery in Ngee Ann City. Oh yes, this place wins high points for the tender meat, the rich consistency of the gravy and the abundant chunks of vegetables. Yummy. Do try the stewed pork and chicken curry when you're there. Forget about the rest.

S$12.90 for set lunch consisting of curried rice + drink + salad.

Are you a chocoholic? If you are, you'd probably know that the finest and best dark chocolate in the world is made by a French company called Valrhona. Now, what if someone took this delicious chocolate and made it into a cake?

Hmm, it seems that someone in Singapore did! Imagine my joy when I tasted the sinful but divine chocolate cake made of layers and layers of moist, dark and creamy Valrohna Chocolate. Ah...simply chocolate heaven.

    Lamb Shank, Cafe Samar, S'pore
    by bpacker
Think Arabic Cuisine and what comes to mind? Lamb of course, slow roasted on a spit over a fire till it is succulent and soft and perhaps a pot of sweet mint tea. Yes, this was what I was thinking about when I ordered the lamb shank and tea in Cafe Samar...

And I had a feast. The hunk of lamb shank , slow roasted on a bed of charcoal and spiced with cardamon, pepper, saffron and served on a plate of tomato rice was delicious. It went well with the olives, tomato paste and yougurt sauce. The tea was good too. The assam tea was infused with whole twigs of mint leaves and it left a good feeling as I sip it after the meal. What a good introduction to Arabic cuisine. I'll be back for more, that's for sure.

Cost : S$24 per lamb shank
S$6 per pot of mint tea

Deliciously deep-fried crabs, whole lobsters and gigantic prawns make an arresting sight in a night bazaar in Geylang Serai. Why shouldn't it? Fried to a golden crisp, those things smell delicious to begin with, even before eating it! And they are, the flesh is tender as they are cooked slowly under the tight red shells

You'll only find this once a year, in make-shift stalls at Geylang Serai in Nov ( Hari Raya Night Bazaar ) . Those things cost about $5 per 100 grams and they'll be given to you in a brown paper bag upon your order.
