The Garlic Restaurant: Keeps the Monsters away

by KookieDough

It is said that garlic keeps the monsters away. Maybe this explains why there was not a dull moment when we went to this place called The Garlic Restaurant. The old belief may have been true, after all. Or maybe not. Maybe it is really just that the restaurant serves really good food. And couple that with good company, you can only expect the promise of a great time.I dined here with my husband and a longtime friend who was on work assignment in Singapore. We ordered steak, soft shell crabs, and sambal shrimps. Every bit of them was more than satisfying.Interiors were simply clean, minimalist-type. But there was nothing minimal in the dishes that they served. Seafood was not overcooked and the flavors were not overpowering. Serving size was satisfying and just right - not too small and not too big. Of course, when you are having a wonderful time, flies by quickly. The restaurant was...

Qun Zhong Eating House: Used to be my most frequent Chinese Restaurant!

by kelnsha

The food here is marvellous but the customer service is bad! You have to try the food yourself, then you will agree with me that it is better than the so call famous Taiwanese dumpling restaurant (not so appropriate to name them here). You don't have to queue for an hour before you are seated even though you may have to wait 5-15 mins because it is a small restaurant with many customers day and night. You must also make sure that the total number of people eating must be at their doorstep before you are allowed to seat in. This is their house rule. There is nothing much to talk about the ambience and surroundings but if you have finished your food, they will chase you to foot the bill. That happened when I witnessed a group of Taiwanese given the "chase away" order and later led to some verbal exchanges which reflected very badly on Singaporean because the lady boss criticised the...

Take a break while touring and have a coffee and toast at Ya Kun. A kopitiam or kopi tiam is a traditional breakfast and coffee shop found in Singapore and Malaysia in Southeast Asia. Ya Kun Kaya Toast is a chain of air-conditioned kopitiams in Singapore. It sells kaya toast, Singapore style coffee and tea, half boiled eggs, etc. Keep it simple and get the singapore coffee and special egg toast.

Ember Restaurant: Fine dining in the heart of Chinatown

by idy

Ember is a popular restaurant located in the funky Hotel 1929 in Chinatown. The fare here can best be described as fusion, if one insists on categorising it, and it is very tasty indeed. Portions are not large, so one can easily have an appetiser to start, followed by a main course, followed by dessert. Those with larger appetites can also order a side dish from a small selection consisting of fries, mash, spicy potatoes, etc. This is prob'ly not the place to go if you are so hungry you could eat a horse. The main course takes about 30 minutes to arrive and the waiter will encourage you to order an appetiser to make the wait seem shorter. As with most fine dining establishments, special effort is made here on presentation. The main course come resting on beds of vegetables, artfully surrounded by potato halves and desserts arrive with syrup artfully dizzled around large plates (on which...

Equinox Restaurant: Dine with the best views in Singapore

by amyhenderson

The Equinox Restaurant is one of 5 restaurants located in the Equinox Complex. This restaurant is located on the 70th (!) floor of the building. Once you enter the restaurant you will be blown away by the amazing 360 degree floor-to-ceiling glass with spectacular views of Singapore (and Malaysia & Indonesia too!) Dress code is smart-casual. Pan-fried Tiger prawns. Words cannot describe. This was a chefs suggestion and my god, good suggestion!

Indochine's Siem Reap II (Empress Place): Up-market and alfresco

by idy

Ideally located by the Singapore river, Siem Reap at the Asian Civilisations Museum offers a warm and cozy dining atmosphere. This is, I think, the most special feature of the Indochine outlet. The large alfresco dining area is shared by patrons of the other 2 Indochine outlets, Waterfront and Bar Opiume. It features a female jazz singer from 9pm onwards. Unfortunately, I didn't much like her singing style. On the menu are a variety of Indo-Chinese selections such as Mango Salad, Vietnamese Chicken Noodles, Laotian Laksa, Vietnamese BBQ Beef Vermicelli. Most of these are pretty average and caters largely to the western palate. There is also a small selection of western offerings such as salads, burgers and sandwiches. Each dish is priced between S$10 and $20.Drinks like coffees and teas go at about $5 and it's at least $15 for a mocktail. The Laotian Laksa is one of the signature dishes...

Indochine's PhoChine (Wisma Atria): Get cosy in the heart of town!

by idy

This is another alfresco outlet under the Indochine umbrella, called PhoChine. Its theme is similar to that of Siem Reap, and even the menu is the same (or at least, very close). You dine on a wooden deck under large green umbrellas, with plants lining the perimeter and partially obsuring the curious gazes of passer-bys walking along Orchard Road. The lighting is soft and warm, supplemented by a tealight on every table. A lovely waterfall is built into the wall separating the higher street level area from the basement segment. The ambience is the best feature of the place, not the food. The dishes served range from Indo-Chinese-Vietnamese salads, noodles, rice and fingerfood like spring rolls. Most of these are passable and not particularly good or bad. There is also a small selection of western dishes like burgers and sandwiches. Each main course averagely costs $15. The Laotian Laksa is...

Lai Lai Family Restaurant: Taiwanese Beef Noodles

by yipsufen

This restaurant is famous for its roasted and marinated beef noodles (SGD 6.80), Taiwanese-styled. The chunky beefs are so well-marinated with spices, soup broth is delicious and noodles are tangy. Eat it with condiments like pickled raddish and chili sauce. Most of the menus here are Taiwanese dishes. You can also order fried dishes, ala-carte style. The restaurant is small and you can see some newspaper cuttings on this restaurant pasted on the wall. If you are not eating anything, try their cool beverages like popular Taiwanese Bubble Tea in various flavours and ice-blended drinks or dessert.
