Palembang Pempek People: Glenda, now you really make me hungry!!!

by YokuMoku

Thank you, Glenda, for forwarding this precious find. These are the most-authentic-looking pempek outside Palembang that I have ever seen on the Internet. The way the pempek is shaped and presented is very original, just like the best peranakan pempek you can get from the Sepuluh Ulu district in Palembang. Plus, most importantly, the company claims that it uses belido fish only. That is a rare find! Now, I just have to wait for bpacker's review on this pempek. Yes, I send bpacker as my gourmet journalist to investigate these delicate and delicious pempek in Singapore. Brmmm, off you go, Glenda. I am looking forward to reading your report ;-)

Vis-a-Vis: Place to go for Foie Gras and Truffles

by Rodan44

Vis-a-Vis is unassuming from the outside and humble inside, but one look at their extensive menu and you immediately know that you are in for a treat. The menu is filled with decadent old-school French haute cuisine, and ingredients such as foie gras and black truffles feature prominently in many dishes. The result is some of the best classical French fare that I've found in Singapore. They also have an incredible selection of French wines, featuring many grand-cru Burgandies and growth ranked Bordeaux. Plus, it's less expensive than many of the top-end French restaurants in the city (although you will still drop a bundle if you really indulge). I started with one of the largest pieces of succulent pan seared Foie Gras that I have ever seen. Utterly decadent. My main course was roasted boneless quail stuffed with fois gras and black truffles in a port wine sauce (yes it's true that I...

Jia Xiang He Po Lei Cha

by rite_of_spring

This is the food of choice for the health-conscious, and vegetable lover. One of the popular Hakka cuisines--a mixture of rice, different variety of vegetables, peanuts, and chinese tea (pale green colour). It is pretty hardly available in Singapore compared to Malaysia. The taste....for those who love it (including me) will love it (probably for life), for those who hate it will not even want to smell it (similar to many people who don't like the taste of durian, the famous tropical fruit). Hakka Lei Cha Fan, Hakka Lei Cha, Hakka Yong Tau FuClosed on Saturday.

Chatterbox Coffeehouse & Cafe: Singapore's National Dish: "Chicken Rice"

by CLillard

The Chicken Rice is 17 Singapore Dollars. The setting of this restaurant mimics the traditional "Singapore Coffeeshop" with touches of the opulent Peranakan motifs and décor. 1. I was told that I cannot leave Singapore without having the local dish called "Chicken Rice". I agree, this is good! This restaurant is famous for having good Chicken Rice. The rice is cooked in the chicken broth, giving it a good flavor. You also get the chicken on the side, already sliced for you. They serve it with several spices that you can dip your chicken in.2. Coconut Ice Cream is also good. It's homemade and even served in the coconut, with a little umbrella in it too.

Gokul's Vegetarian Restaurant: EXCELLENT Vegetarian Option

by global-drifter

After promising several taxi drivers to give it a go, I find myself at Gokul Vegetarian Restaurant at 19 Upper Dixon road. Although the restaurant is packed, I find no other westerners present - ALWAYS a good sign :) The clientele is local, with traditional saris mingling alongside designer sunglasses. The decor is simple, if a bit understated, but I soon find that here it is the food that is the spectacle. I order samosa chaat and am not disappointed. The food is heaven sent with an extensive menu including Indian, Nepalese, Chinese and Western cuisine. Samosa chaat.Sure it's a messy dining experience, but if you don't look at it - you'll find yourself amazed at the explosive mix of different flavors competing for your attention. Go on, give it a go!

Famous Islamic Restaurant: Excellent curry's

by Willettsworld

We had just arrived in Singapore and were staying at the ABC Backpackers Hostel (see my accommodation tip) just up the road from the Sultan Mosque, to which this restaurant is located opposite. Biryani features heavily on the menu here as well as mutton in the style of the Bengalis. Curry’s aren't too spicy and should suit all tastes. Very good food and well worth a visit even if you're staying in Downtown. Numerous black and white photographs fill the walls, indicative of the long history and tradition which this restaurant has. An old film projector stands out prominently at the entrance, only to remind visitors of its heritage. Open: 10am-10pm.

On the coast (lots of options): Spicey Chili Crab or Black Pepper Crab

by acommon1

One of my Expat buddies took me to a place not far from the Singaporean coast. There are a large cluster of seafood restaurants in sort of a open area. No high rises around here. People can take a leisure walk after dinner along the coast or through the park. Tons of locals frequent this area. I didn't see many tourist if any. Dress was casual. So, you know that it has to be really good. Spicy Chili Crab--Subtle sweet savory flavor that radiates from the whole crab that you'll receive. If you have a concern about being neat then don't order this dish. You're guaranteed to get mess. This happens regardless of selecting the option of wearing a plastic bib or napkin around your neck. Chew carefully as to enjoy all the flavor. Be ready to the latent burn releasing of your laps once you've dined for a little bit. Peppered Crab--Hard to find back in the States. This dish looks as if they've...

Killeney Kopitiam: Try their Laksa

by kemisteryoso

if you are going to Bintan or Batam Islands Indonesia and still waiting for boarding time. Try this restaurant at Tenah Merah ferry Terminal. They serve steamed chicken, variety of noodles and some kind of Fried rice with toppings. I tried their Laksa and its good compared to others.

The Meeting Place: Seafood Barbeque

by muratkorman

My waterpolo teammates organised a dinner in The Meeting Place for my farewell. This small stall in Clementi offers very delicious and cheap seafood options. Stingray, crayfish, prawns, fried rice and a perfect company of friends was the summary of our dinner. All meals were fresh and mouth watering. For those on a tight budget, you can get the best seafood here. Stingray and crayfish barbeque
