Orchard Road

by Ewingjr98

Orchard Road is the center of Singapore's modern shopping district. Its two-mile stretch is packed with department stores, fancy cafes, expensive restaurants, and other places to spend a lot of money. If you are a tourist, your best bet is to stick with the local shops: to get a feel for the culture and to save a few dollars!Orchard Road is named after the farms and fruit orchards that thrived in this area before the city grew and overwhelmed them.

Osim outlets & Department stores: Free massage !

by sourbugger

Many department stores have a display of Osim products which include an amazing new massage chair that seems to grip you just about everywhere. We tried one in a department store for a good 10 minutes. The chair actually massages you in sychonization to a piece of music. Unfortunately the test piece was "Woman in Red" by Chis de Burgh.Anyway, we we came quite re-vitalised by the experience. They also do a range of other massage equipment including a hand held hot-air / massager which was happily demonstrated as well. The massage chair might be a bit heavy to put in the rucksack - but some places will ship. The hand-held massager as shown in the picture seemed to be available in loads of places for SD$ 168.

Bugis Parco Shopping Mall

by ahcoln

Straits-Chinese facades, Peranakan tiles, shuttered windows all lent an air of nostalgia and a refreshing mix to this modern shopping centre. Featuring Singapore's first air-conditioned shopping streets, PARCO offers more than 165 specialty shops of fun, food and fashion. Here, you can find almost anything - Seiyu, one of Japan's leading retailers, manages a four-level departmental store, a supermarket, foodcourt and a host of specialty shops.

HMV: Buying Music CDs and Video CDs

by CLillard

Singapore's largest music store has three floors of music. Floor 1 is the best to listen to and buy Asian music. Whatever style of music you like, you can probably find that same style sung in Mandarin Chinese. Yes, they even have Chinese Rhythm & Blues, Chinese Rap, Chinese Dance, Chinese Rock, Classical and of course Pop. And most Pop CDs also include a few songs in English. The store has plenty of American and British CDs, but why would you go to Singapore to buy that?!I bought some really good pop Mandarin CDs. You can tell what language the CD is because the store includes on the price label "MAND CD" for Mandarin (the most common dialect of Chinese) or "JAP CD" for Japanese, etc. They have many different listening stations set up, head first for the CHINESE TOP 10. If you see a CD that is not featured at a listening station, ask Customer Service who will set up a listening station...

Funan Mall, North Bridge Road: Computer hardware and software - FUNAN

by canttaketheskyfromme

The main main in Singapore dedicated to various high tech gizmos. This is a good place to come to buy computer hardware. There are a large number of independent vendors selling components, custom build and pre-built systems at reasonable rates. Prices are not strictly fixed in most places, and you can ask for a discount. Having several vendors in one place allows you to make good comparisons on both quality and price, but insist on a warranty and be clear on whether or not you can return goods.Whilst Singapore is good for hardware, for software you are far better off shopping in JB, especially at Holiday Plaza. There is no decent food court here anymore. Head over to Bugis Junction for food.

Funan DigitaLife Mall: Electronics

Ion Center and others: Orchard Road Is an Upscale Shopper's Mecca

by AKtravelers

....Singapore has been a trading port for centuries, so it's no surprise that it boasts several areas devoted completely to shopping. I didn't shop, but it seemed like almost everyone around me did, maybe that's because my hotel was in the Orchard Road district, one of Singapore's high-end shopping areas. The best thing about it for me was that, being there around Christmas, I got to see Orchard Road all decked out for the holidays with an elaborateness that you would only get from merchants seeking holiday customers. And, while the shops on Orchard Road's surface seem impressive, remember that there are lots of stores in the underground passageways associated with the MRT subway so that Singaporeans don't have to leave the air-conditioning to shop.

Arab Street: Shop for Textiles

by Arfah

Here at Arab Street you will find many shops on the left and right side of the road selling textiles, shawls and carpets. Somewhere along the way, you might even found shops selling scarf and baskets. They're sold at a quite reasonable price and at some shops you can even bargain.

Mona J: Good place to buy souvenirs

by Arfah

Mona J, a shop selling all sort of souvenirs such as keychain, fridge magnet, t-shirts, caps, postcards and other things that can be brought home for families, friends and yourself. Prices are very reasonable and you can bargain too. Key chains sold at $10 for 12 pieces, fridge magnet $10 for 4 pieces and others sold quite reasonable too.

Bugis Street: Hot Street Shopping

by Arfah

It's not a shop. It's a huge street shopping area where you'll find many rows of indoor stalls selling clothes for men, women and children, souvenirs, handbags, drinks, fruits and other things. I believe it's most suitable for the cost conscious...like myself. You can bargain here, but there are also some stalls which claimed their price is the lowest so there's no discount. You can get souvenirs here at a quite reasonable price...example the Merlion keychain - $10 for 10, fridge magnets - $10 for 4 pieces, small Merlion statue - $2.50 per piece, Singapore t-shirts from $5 and many more.As for clothes, they are very up to date here and sold at a very reasonable price. It's quite a big place...and can get crowded especially around 12pm onwards.
