    CHIJMES

CHIJMES (pronounced "Chimes") was once the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ). The chapel, built in the 1903, still stands today. Weddings are still being held at this venue.

CHIJ reopened its doors as CHIJMES in 1997 after a S$100 million in restoration . Who would have thought that one of Singapore's premier nightspots would be behind cloister walls?

CHIJMES is more of a chill out retreat. It is an ideal place to relax and chill out. La Cave Winebar, China Jump, Father Flanagan's Irish Pub are the places where you can chill out.

The ambience is reminiscent of nostalgic Shanghai in the 30s. At around 10 pm, the place will be transfored into a disco. A live band performs from 10.30 pm every night except Wednesdays.

Chijmes: Bars, music and plenty of people!

    chijmes by night

Chijmes is on the site of a former convent school for girls, and the beautiful gothic-style church is still a main feature of the complex. Quiet during the day, Chijmes comes alive at night with a number of restaurants, bars and live music venues clustered around a sunken courtyard. The trees are strung with sparkling white fairy lights making everywhere look really pretty, and the whole place has a great atmosphere.

It's also worth a visit during the day, to see the beautiful colonial buildings by day, and to browse around the boutique style gift shops.

    Dress Code: smart casual.

Converted convent and church that has been made into a multipurpose eating / drinking complex. Nice courtyard location with several levels, we drank at Harry's bar, and ate at the Sun restaurant.
Apparently very busy some nights, but was strangely quiet when we visited on Saturday night (perhaps we were a bit early, we left at 10).

Dress Code: Casual, although there arent too many beach bum types around...perhaps smartish casual is the norm, but theres no official dress code.

The white Gothe church is located on Chijmes square, but close to it are several stylish restaurants, pubs, bars and clubs. One can't deny its beauty neither in day nor at night. I love especially the atmosphere at night when yellow light arms the air. It's romantic and European, belongs to couples...

Chijmes: not noisy like clarke and boat quay!

by ukirsari Updated Mar 15, 2005 1790 reviews

the convent of holy infant jesus [chij] chapel and caldwell house gazetted as a monument on october 26th 1990.
for me, the concept is brilliant. the chapel is in gothic style [completed 1890 - 1910] then behind this place is caldwell house, designed by gd. coleman and purchased on august 18th 1852 by reverend jm beurel. and now changed into places for eating and drinking, live performance and spa. and the name itself becomes chijmes [pronounced as chimes].
whenever i found clarke and boat quay in noisy-hectic atmosphere, here my feeling turn into relaxing mode. nice and comfy. several places for hang-out here are: la cafe winebar and father flanagan's irish pub.

Dress Code: casual but not flip flop, please.

  • Insomnia @ Chijmes, Singapore: Terrible Service at Insomnia Bar, Chijmes

by SpawnyWhippet Written Oct 19, 2010 1 reviews

Myself and some friends were at Insomnia and ordered cocktails, the round coming to over $100. One of the girls drank a little of hers, then moved the lime slice on the rim of the glass and noticed that the lime was covering a large broken bit of glass, and that the broken glass bits had fallen into the drink.

When we told the waiter we wanted a replacement drink, he looked unconcerned that our friend could have swallowed broken glass. He just came back with an unbroken glass and poured her drink into it.
We said that was unaccepable, so he took her drink away and would not offer a replacement.
When we complained to the manager, he finally offered half a replacement cocktail, as she had taken a sip from the previous glass.
Upon receipt of the half replacement ( a lot less that they had poured away), my friend remarked that it was practically water, almost no alcohol in it at all.
We complained again and the manager told us that was the best he was going to do, and if we didn't like it, we should leave.

We left, and I am therefore advising everyone else to not go.

Chijmes: the fabulous Nitespot of Chijmes part 1

The former Roman Catholic Convent and School Called Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus and the Big Caldwell House that was Reverted to Government Control in 1983 after it was relocated to another area of Singapore is now one of the Premier Shopping and Dining and Nitespot Destination in Singapore. It is just a stone's throw in my hotel in Oxford that I must try it. This Gothic syle Monument now house some of the coolest Club Lounges and Bars and restaurants in Singapore. Chijmes' walls offer all types of cuisine from Chinese to Mediterranean and the variety of bars allow for romantic or Friendly and even Flirting conversation in spots such as Ocho, hard clubbing at China Jump and live music at Insomnia and Tapas at Bobby's tapas Bar and loud Music at Central. A lot of foreigners also go here and the price of the food and the drinks especially the beers don't come cheap! (at least $ 10 a draft glass at happy hour price which lasts from 9:00 pm to 2:00 am and $ 15 for large draft beers like Guiness or Tiger or Heineken or Carlsberg).

Dress Code: Smart Casual heck you can even wear shorts and flip flops inside unless you want to enter the chill out lounges inside where the attire is not allowed.

the best areas to party in in the middle in the huge courtyard where the center of the action is where the music blares loud, for really silent conversation, try the restaurants and bars at the periphery and the club lounges are at the basement.
