Raffles Hotel - Long Bar: The most famous bar in the city

by Airpunk Written May 29, 2013

If there's only one place you can visit in Singapore, this would be the one to choose. Here, colonial Singapore comes back to life and it was at this very place that the Singapore Sling was invented. Of course, this is not the cheapest bar (a Sling costed smothing around 20-25 SGD in 2010). So enjoy the atmosphere, but be aware that a whole evening at this place can stress your budget.

Almost everything in this place is made of dark wood, the staff wear uniforms like in the 1920s and of course, you can buy Singapore Sling related souvenirs (e.g. glasses). The Sling is prepared in the own Raffles Recipe which is a modification of a recipe used until the mid-1970s. The pre-1970s version is available in other places under the name „Straits Sling“. The original recipe is lost, but is is generally assumed that the Straits Sling comes closer to the lost recipe than today's Sling in the Long Bar. Still, I consider it as a must-do to try today's interpretation. You get free peanuts and it is a custom to through the shells on the ground like in the good old times.

Dress Code: Casual is fine, just don't look like you are coming directly from the beach (or worse).

Part two of My Long Bar Tips

the Most Popular Bar in Singapore mainly because this is the birthplace of the Singapore Sling! ( Since invented by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon between 1910 and 1915 and passed on by mouth for generations). Singapore is A FINE City (you get fined for a lot of things), this bar in an exception since you can throw the complimentary peanuts served at the floor! What else to do in Singapore but to savor the authentic Singapore Sling (although it is still better in the marina bay sands). Prices here costs an arm and a leg but is worth it and the live bands at the third floor is simply awesome! (see my videos). Prices here start at $ 25 singapore dollars for a singapore sling, $ 18 for bottled beers like Tiger or Heineken or Stella Artois and $ 52 for a long pitcher of the Draft beer, definitely not for cheapskates!

Long Bar: Only place you can litter without being FINED

by Applelyn Written Sep 23, 2006

The lounge has two storeys. The first one is a cosy lounge for people to chat and enjoy music which streams in from the upper level. The band plays on the upper level and those who love dancing can utilize a little open space just in front of the band. The culture there is peanut shells :) coz they want and love it when you litter them on the floor. I love the fans on the ceiling as the slow motion seems to soothe me down from a busy life.

    Dress Code: Smart Casual

Reffels Long Bar: Wolrd Known Raffle Long Bar

    by kirsty_lamb Written Apr 15, 2006

Raffels Hotle has a bar in it that is world renowned for it's the home of the Singapour Sling! The Sling sound horrid when you read the ingrediants, however when in Rome....and it's pretty good!

Anyhow, the Bar has two floors, and a round stair case to the upper floor. the ventalation is a line of mechanise fans whi his very cool! On the tables are peanuts for you to eat, and then you must drop the shells on to the floor.

There are many bars that try and replicate the Long bar, but nothing compares to the actual one!

Dress Code: Not really, but Smart casual as a minimum I would say.

Raffles Hotel, Long Bar: The Singapore Sling

This is a legendary place to spend a night in Singapore. Packed with tourists yearning for the old colonial ways of escaping from the hot and humid nights, the bar is a throwback from the past, but it's airconditioned with giant fans swaying in the ceiling.

This is the only place in Singapore where one can make a mess without copping a fine. The patrons can just toss away the peanut shells on the floor. Imagine thousands of these peanut shells lying around.

Live bands play to entertain the guests until the wee hours in the morning. One must try the Singapore Sling of course.

Dress Code: Neat and smart clothes.

Long Bar: Authentic Bar in Raffles Hotel

It has a wonderful bar called Long Bar in the hotel. Really have an authentic look of the olden days of Singapore. Customers are being served with peanuts - and the fun thing is that, u can throw away the shell of the peanuts on the floor, without even getting urself a fine (which is popular in Singapore :D). It seems that due to the fact that Singapore is a clean country, they make the rule in the bar that anybody is free to litter in it. Just the shells tho .....
Order a Singapore Sling drinks and u get a new glass as a souvenier.
Plus u could enjoy the atmosphere with a wonderful music frm the live band.

Dress Code: Casual. You can even goes in with bermudas and sandals....
Pretty laid back kind of atmosphere.

I would start at the Raffles Hotel and order a Singapore Slinger - because really, you have to in Singapore. Then, you can walk along the river where there are restaurants and bars to enjoy. There is always live music, and plenty of people watching to be done. It's a great place to spend your nights and meet some people.

    Having a Singapore Sling

Have a Singapore Sling in the place that it was invented. The cocktail was invented by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon at the Raffles Hotel in 1910. I think that it was the most expensive cocktail that I've ever had as it cost 15 Singapore dollars.

Long Bar @ Raffles Hotel: Throw Peanuts ALL Over the Floor!!!!

by Rachelynn Written Dec 7, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It has often been said that this is the ONLY place in Singapore where you would not be fine for littering...=P How true!!!

You can throw the peanuts all over the floor at Long Bar. This is one of my favourite place to chill out on friday evening. Not that i'm a litterbug . =P

But seats are really hard to get on weekend evenings, esp after 8pm, and they generally do not accept reservations, well, if you are a Raffles Hotel's guest, i suppose it shouldn't be a problem. =) Afterall it's a 5 star hotel. =)

If you wanna enjoy Live Music, try to find a seat on the upper deck. The group is very good and very friendly. Songs dedications are accepted.

Seats are pretty comfy unless you are sitting at the bar, it's very living room concept, balinese arm chairs and sofa with cushions and tropical plants, and with leaf-shaped fans swaying on top of you...Very very nice ambience. And not forgetting the peanut shells on the floor, now how tropical can you get????

Click on the url for more pictures. I will try to snap photos wheni'm there again.

The Singapore Sling & Tiger Lily are popular choices in Long Bar.

Me? i usually order apricot brandy. =)

    Dress Code: Casual.

    Raffles

The Long Bar at Raffles is one of my favourites ever , wicker chairs and nut shells all over the floor , expensive but like a London members club , you can sit there and peruse the Times for hours on end.
