 | Singapore Malaysia Reviews | 1 - 10 of 10 | | Kukup is a fishing village built on stilts over the sea and is located about 70 kilometres from Johor Bahru and 20 kilometres from Pontian with only one road to get you there. Kukup is famous for its seafood but in my opinion there's better in Singapore and I'm told even better in JB. But it's worth a day trip and there are many operators that will take you there. Enroute to Kukup fishing village most tour operators will visit Orchid Valley with it's 1.5 million tropical orchid plants of more than 80 varieties. Orchid Valley is located only 28km from Johor Bahru. My visit coincided with the magnificent Tiger Orchid in full blossom which I'm told only occurs once every 12 years. Leave a Comment

The Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque is a combination of English and the Moorish architecture and is situated on a hill overlooking the Straits of Johor. Admission is free and the visiting hours are 10:00 - 18:00 from Saturday - Thursday except during congregational prayers. It's easily reached via the causeway from Singapore either by car or even on foot if you're up to the walk across the Straits. Leave a Comment

The beautiful Istana Besar palace was commissioned by Sultan Abu Bakar who laid the foundation stone back in 1864. It's one of the oldest buildings in Johor and it is a combination of English and the Moorish architecture. Istana Besar is one of the oldest buildings in Johor and it is an interesting combination of English and Moorish architecture. The palace is now used as a museum displaying a collection of treasures from the royal family. Much of the original furniture came from England. Leave a Comment

Not sure one can claim Malaysia is off the beaten path. But you can very easily go from Singapore. Be it for the day or longer. With JB being only about 40 minutes away and KL only about 5 hours it gives you a good excuse to see another place on the same trip. I used my second weekend in Singapore to go to Kuala Lumpur on the overnight bus and back on the overnight train. Leave a Comment

The city of Melaka is one of Malaysia's most historical destinations with Dutch and Chinese buildings dating back to the 17th century and later the British with their colonial architecture. Melaka can be done on as part of a packaged bus trip tour from Singapore. It's a whole day trip of around 12 hours. Leave a Comment

If you want to leave Singapore for a day I strongly recommend you to make a visit to Malacca in Malaysia. This town is 3-4 hours busdrive from Singapore and you get to see the exotic Malaysian landscape on the way. Malacca is a couple of hundred years old and has been populated by both Dutch and Portuguese people and you will find that the main square is called the Dutch square. I also visited the oldest Chinese temple in Malysia which was a real experience. Organised tours are operated every day from Singapore by various tour companies. Ask in a tourist office or in the hotel reception, you will be picked up at the hotel in the morning. Read more about Malacca and see some nice photos on my Malacca-page. Enroute to Kukup fishing village you may also get an opportunity to stop at a traditional Malay palm oil plantation. But do wear some mosquito repellant and watch out for snakes amongst the foliage. Leave a Comment

Johor Bahru is a Malaysian city located just north of Singapore, their is a causeway connecting the Singaporean island with the Malaysian mainland and as soon as you have crossed the causeway you are in this town. This town is quite boring, there is not very much too see except for a palace but for those people visiting Singapore with limited time it could be a way of doing a short visit to Malaysia. Johor Bahru is about 30 mins drive from Singapore city centre, you can go there yourself by bus or train or take an organised tour (which is a half-day tour). Leave a Comment
