Bugis Village Hawker Center, Singapore

I liked my dinner here. I was lucky this time as Valerie picked it for me and said “Eat this, you’ll like it.” Well I did. Just a downstairs hawker center in a shopping center in Bugis, it made for quite a meal and definitely in our price range for the evening.

Laksa is a tradtional mix of spices from a few cultures added to noodles and various seafood or chicken. Lets just say that I think they put ALL the spices of these cultures together! This dish was really fantastic, but extremely hot. I pride myself on having an iron stomach, and this didn't give me any problems... once I got past my mouth! I think my tongue is still recovering from the spice!

If you can handle it, or more to the point, if you like spicy food, you must give this a try.

Any of the food markets sell it, I just had mine at Bugis'.

This is a typical hawker center. You can get assorted local & Western food here. There are stalls on the each side of the center as you can see from the picture.

Right at the back of the picture, it is actually a drinks & dessert stall.

This place is not air-conditioned, but is properly sheltered from sun & rain. The place is relatively clean. I have not heard of anybody getting stomach upsets eating here.

Actually, right behind the dessert stall is another Chinese Restaurant and beside that is the Bugis Village Flea Market. The Chinese Restaurant offers ala carte dishes served with rice, or noodle dishes. On the average, per dish will cost S$8 onwards.

Favorite Dish: I tried the Grilled Lamb (S$7.00) from one of the Western food stalls. It was yummie.

I also like the Chinese Herbal Jelly with Sea Coconut iced dessert (S$3.50). Should you order this dessert, remember to squeeze the lime provided. It makes a lot of difference - definitely tastes better. =) *slurp

The average price for per plate/bowl of noodles is S$3.00-S$4.50. (Which is about USD1.70 - USD2.60)

As with other Hawker Centers,The Albert Center market and Food Centers assorted Hawker foods is an ecletic mix of Singaporean, Malysian, Indonesian, Peranakan, Regional Chinese, Regional Indian and Sri Lankan Cuisines which are really cheap on the budget. Furthermore, the place is packed with locals and is always full. Here are some pictures of the food and stall inside and a tip: buy a small pack of tissue paper at $ 0.40 for ambulant vendors and use them to reserve a table for eating as the Singaporeans do it instead of leaving their items at the table and also to use it after the meals since the hawker centers never offer free napkins for the meals and drinks served.

Favorite Dish: the meals here are really cheap for Singaporean Standards as you can have sime one dish rice meals like roasted chicken rice or for just $ 3.50 and Claypot Rice Meals at $ 4. The Noodles like Laksah costs at $ 3 and the Noodle dishes like Mee Goreng at $ 3 also. the drinks are an assortment like the Barley drink and lemon iced tea at $ 1.40 for a large drink. Bottled Water at $ 1.30 for a 500 ml size. Desserts like Ais Kacang or Gula Melaka costs $ 1.40.

there are actually 3 big hawker food centers in the Bugis Area of Singapore and they are Golden Mile Food Center in Beach Road, the North Bridge Road Market and Food Center in North Beach Road and the one we tried which was the Albert Center Market and Food Center in Queens Road just beside the Bugis Village which wa a short 10 minute walk from our hotel.
