Geylang Serai: untouristy malay food
Geylang serai is a really hot place. It's totally unglamorous with ugly chairs and tables, stuffy ventilation and dirty-looking floors. But don't worry, the food is clean! It's really delicious too. It's real malay food that hasn't been toned down or experimented with for tourists' benefit, at least not that i can see. So for those in search of 'authentic cultural artifacts', this is pretty good stuff. Some of the signs are in malay, but the owners can mostly speak english. There's a wet market too.
Favorite Dish: All the stalls are not bad, so just pick a promising one and go. It's best if u go in a group, so u can all order different things and try. very cheap. The kuih stall (traditional pastries n cakes) is all good.
Geylang Serai: Malay Cuisine as it was meant to be...
We found Geylang Serai thanks to the folks at www.the-inncrowd.com --the food is amazing! Geyland Serai is basically a marketplace with stands including clothing and household goods, a `dry` market with dried foods and spices, a `wet` market with seafood, meats and veggies, a walkway with pre-prepared and fried foods and in the back a wonderful food-court with stall after stall of flavorful, interesting and cheap Malay foods.
Favorite Dish: Stall 200`s beef rendang and ayam korma, hands down. Plus a roti from the other end of the food market. Check out the inn crowd`s webpage for more info.
