Rice Table: ‘Rijsttafel’ in Singapore
“Rijsttafel,” a Dutch word that means rice table, is a term coined by the Dutch themselves when they first approached Indonesian food. At first, they sampled one dish with caution. The next thing, there was a feast on the table, and so, the rice table concept had emerged.
My Indo-Chinese friend brought me and my colleagues to Rice Table, an Indonesian restaurant where delicious dishes (some are even close to the Filipino taste) are neatly laid out on a food warmer. It’s buffet time! Yummy!
The restaurant is bathed in warm hues and earth colours, very relaxing to the eyes with candles and some artifacts, adding decorative touch.
Favorite Dish: The names of the food are, as expected, hard to memorize because they’re in Bahasa so I snatched a placemat with the clearly printed names of the dishes (so I can recall the dishes that I liked). I particularly liked Tahu Telor (tofu omelette) and Ayam Panggang (grilled chicken). I didn’t try the other dishes with curry or something close to it. I can say that I’m not that adventurous when it comes to food and I only eat the ones that I’m sure I would be able to enjoy.
