Funan IT Mall, Singapore
Funan is one of the places where it is not necessary to wrestle with sharks. It's a huge place on multiple levels that mainly deals with computers, accessories and software. Prices are displayed and fixed. It is possible to look around without constantly being hassled. There is a good selection of goods on offer.
What to buy: Computer hardware, software and accessories.
Funan The IT Mall is one of Asia's Leading IT Centre.
Not only do they have renowned and reliable and quality conscious vendors and service providers, it also provide great shopping experience.
Funan The IT Mall also offers a wide selection of music stores, bookshops, home interior and other lifestyle shops, restaurants and cafe.
The popular restaurants are Yakun, KFC/TacoBell/Pizza Hut, Polar, Jollibean, Pasta Mania, Mac Donalds and Coffee Bean.
Funan IT Mall caters to some of the biggest IT and electronics shops and department stores in Singapore. Some of this shop are Courts and Challenger. There are also some non-computer related shops here such as sports apparel, furniture shops and even a wedding dress shop.
What to buy: The purpose of going to this Mall is to get actual recommended retail prices of IT and electronic device you wish to buy. Then, head off to Sim Lim Square to get cheaper prices. Remember to ask for Goods and Services Tax (GST) included prices because some might say lower or cheaper prices without the actual GST. Also, ask if the shop is a STAR retailer shop which provides security and guarantee to sell only the original items. Moreover, ask if the shop provides GST refund which you can claim on the airport or in Sim Lim Square.
What to pay: Depending on what you are going to buy. Generally, desktop computer costs near to 1k to almost 2k SGD. While laptop computers, cost between 1k to 4k dollars depending on the specs.
For techno geeks, the Funan IT Mall is the place to be. This place is much quieter than Sim Lim or Lucky Plaza. Lucky Plaza salesmen can be quite pushy (which I rather find annoying).
Try the Fuwell IT shop -- #05-44 Funan Digitalife Mall
What to buy: memory cards, etc.
What to pay: Depends on what you need to buy but I think that prices in Fuwell are reasonable.
One of Singapores premier IT Malls and home to one of the few Taco Bells located in Asia and the Southern Hemisphere, Funan IT Mall is a must hit while in Singapore. Some may say i am bias due to the fact that i only first visited Funan because of the fact that there was a Teco Bell located inside, but after stuffing my face with bean burritos, i discovered Funan was actaully and impressive IT Mall. Second only maybe to Sim Lim Square when it comes to IT Malls in Singapore. Funan offers competitive prices, located in Singapores city centre.
Funan has really evolved into the absolute high end computer shopping centre. Ten years ago, there were still some shops offering true personal service, but recently, it's really been taken over by chainstores offering inpersonal service. Funan is not my kind of shopping centre, and if you're looking for bargains or possible negotiation of the prices (read: haggle), you're better off looking around the shopping centres outside the city district (Bukit Timah Shopping Centre, Beauty World and Bukit Timah Plaza are better, local places). If you want to stay in town, try Sim Lim Square instead.
What to buy: Anything associated with computers.
What to pay: You can expect to pay more than in the rest of Singapore due to its reputation. The upside is that you're likely to find just about anything here.
You must spend half a day in Funan if you want to get a laptop. I like the large store on the top floor where you can checkout all the prices before going to any of the small shops downstairs to buy. It is usually cheaper and this way you will definitely not be ripped off!
What to buy: Close to any electronic product
What to pay: Depends on what you buy. Acer is really cheap but i prefer japanese brand like Fujitsu. Around S$6000 I paid for everything including accessories. i.e. around 2 grand.
Singapore is most probably the best place to buy electronics and computer gadgets. The latest models are available on a low price and there are plethora of shops to visit. The topmost floor hosts a bigger store that has the full spectrum of gadgets.
Any computing and PDA related item can be found in Funan IT Mall that has five floors of shops specialising to computers, both hardware and software. To be fair, there is one Christian bookshop and a few furniture outlets, too. The lower level has some cafes and fast food joints, but usually there is too much noise from game exhibition or similar, and you really can't hang out in the cafe for extended periods.
Most of the stores display the prices and there's no need to haggle with the sales clerk. For haggling, consider visiting Sim Lim Square. Asian manufacturers specialise in small gadgets that sport the same design. There is not much difference in the features, but some items are more reliable than the others. Check your clerk for suggestions, sometimes you may get an honest opinion.
Shops full of electrical equipment, allows one to barter a great bargain. I would recommend checking out a few and perhaps doing some research before you go there, too.
What to buy: Electronic and electrical goods.
The Funan IT Mall is 7 floors of electronics paradise. Whenever I come to singapore and I need any plugs, adapters, or cables, I go stright to this mall. I like the atmosphere in the mall, it is very bright, lively, and clean. There is food on site, and it is delicious. The top floor is a huge electronics and office supply shop with nearly anything you might need. Be sure to visit the large shop on the 5th floor as well, I always get my power accessories there including plugs and transformers.
What to buy: Go to Funan IT mall if you need any electronics, or office supplies. There is a variety of shops including several restaurants, and even a tactical equipment store ( for those hardcore Call of Duty gamers). If you like anime, there is an anime themed restaurant where the waitresses get all dressed up as anime girls. It is a lot of fun, and you should see it.
What to pay: Don't expect to haggle a lot at this mall. It is western style shopping. Choose your item and pay for it.
