    That's what I call a full meal
    by knerten
If you go to Singapore, get in the the right mood from the start by flying there with Singapore Airlines. It's worth every cent, and if you do some research on the Internet some time ahead and if you don't get tired of trying endless combinations of outbound and return flights, you are likely to hit a good deal, even in economy class.
First, there's legroom, lots of it, unless you happen to sit at the seat that has the box for the video on demand in front of it. On my 12h flight from Frankfurt time simply flew by as I watched and endless arry of movies, listen to music of all kinds and played video games. Comfy seats (first time I ever slept on a plane without having my neck twisted).
For starters, a hot wet towel. Real cloth, not paper tissue.
Drinks, generously poured, not just one round.
Dinner: Go for the Asian choice, don't even consider the other option. You will be rewarded.
    More generously poured drinks.
Throughout the night, chilled water to keep you from dehydrating, and even a mid-flight snack: sandwich.
    Before breakfast, another wet towel.
Breakfast: a superbly done meal, say no more.
Arrival at Changi: Very efficient: the baggage was already waiting by the short time (15 mins max) I spent walking through customs to the conveyor belt.
And no immigration hassles. No lines, a quick machine-read of my passport, a smile and a "Have a great stay in Singapore".
So all in all, if you want to fly like a person and be treated like one, choose SIA. If you're a cheapskate and want to be herded like cattle, choose anything else.
OK, for the sake of fairness, there are a few more airlines that do it as good as or maybe better than SIA, but not many.
If I ever go back to S'pore, and I will, I promise, I'll definitely choose SIA again.

There are a number of airlines that fly from Perth to Singapore.

Qantas and Singapore Airlines are the most popular but Malaysia Airlines and Royal Brunei Airlines also have very competitive prices.

We chose to fly Qantas because the flight times were the most family friendly. Departure from Perth was at lunchtime and arrived in Singapore in time for dinner.

And that's very important when you're travelling with hungry kids.

Singapore Airlines is one of the Great Airlines of the World and one of the keys of being A Great Airline unfortunately is being partly or heavily Subsidized by their national governments and Singapore Airlines is one such Airline (In Asia, only the Philippines don't give subsidies to its National Airline). Singapore Airlines was formerly Malayan Airways Limited and Started Operations in 1947 but in 1972, it split into Singapore Airlines and Malaysian Airlines. Obviously its hub is in Changi Airport and flies to 65 destinations in 35 countries on five continents. Singapore Airlines operates a wide-body aircraft fleet from four aircraft families: the Boeing 747, the Boeing 777, Airbus A380 and the Airbus A340 and also has a subsidiary, Silk Airlines, a budget regional carrier serving secondary routes.

Singapore Changi has been consistently one of the best airports in the world.

    Airport Code = SIN

The old airport was Paya Lebar. Changi is built on reclaimed land and approaching the airport is over the sea and golf courses below with a spectacular city skyscrapper skyline in the near distance.

There are two major terminals and a third terminal is opening soon. So important to note whether your plane is in terminal 1 or terminal 2 which are coonected by a free skytrain.

There are plenty of shops and eateries, sports viewing televions, events, free online and local call service, swimming pool, etc to keep you occupied if you check in early or in transit. You can even sign up for a free city tour if you are in transit for more than 4 hours.

From the airport, use the taxi, bus or MRT to get to downtown. For taxis, there are various taxi surchages and so no worry of being overcharged by taxi drivers.

At departure, you can also get your GST refund.

    only nonstops to the US
    by Skylink
The longest flights in the world are the Singapore Airlines non-stop to Los Angeles and Newark. It uses long range A340-500 versions specially fitted with fewer seats to trade capacity for increased range. This results in a more comfortable flight. Singapore Airlines only has a special small fleet of 5 of these 500 series A340. It would not be too much of a surprise if these planes were sold and replaced with the new Boeing 777-200LR version as Singapore Airlines operates other versions of the 777 and has ordered the long range 787-9.

Note the A340's are becoming all business class starting in May and will be completely converted by September, 2008. No more economy (economy plus) class.

I had been told how Singapore Airline is fantastic for it's quality of service... well no one exagerated...they're really the best.

JAL, Cathay, Thai are not bad either but of all the European, North American and Asian airline i took, they're the one who has the best service. No big line up. Decent price. First class service even if you're in Economy.

They also have the prettiest flight attendant in the world but i don't want to think about it... I'll start crying on my next flight intra-USA...

Definitely the most friendly and welcoming airport I visited on my trip was Changi. That says alot, seeing that I arrived at 2 AM. The MRT doesn't start working until 5:30, so I had some time to kill in the airport. Equiped with free internet and video games inside the passenger terminal and a Starbucks outside... lets just say if you give me coffee and video games and I am a happy man. The immigration personel reminded me of meeting a long lost friend they were so nice and happy.

The shopping is excellent, and the airport itself follows the route of Singapore in being about as cleanas you can get.

Well if you want to fly budget airlines then I think you should try JetStarAsia / Value Air. Its not as cheap as AirAsia but you treated to nice friendly staff and you fly in a descent plane. I flew from Singapore to Bali and I enjoyed the flight. They served a light meal as well and I guess I never had a problem with delayed flights.

Singapore Airline: It says 20 kgs, but 30 kgs are allowed
  • Tip Rating:

  • My economy ticket with Singapore Airlines clearly stated that my baggage allowance was 20kgs. On calling the airline I was told that they would allow 25kgs, which was good, since I had bought a lot of stuff. On check-in my bags turned out to be 29kgs...ouch!...at 80NZ dollars per kg (I had checked that too) this was a small shock. Then...phew!...it turned out that they allowed up to 30kgs...at the discretion of the check-in attendant. So I wouldn't want to count on that, say, if the plane is smack full, but it's worth knowing.

P.S. This was on a flight from Christchurch, NZ to Singapore, August 2004.

Most people probably arrive in Singapore by plane.
Changi airport is located 20 km east of the city centre and has been ranked as the best airport in the world.
I can understand why, this airport is amazing!
Not just that both check-in, baggage reclaim and customs work very efficiently with no queues, there are plenty of activities for the traveller.
Lots lots of shops, an internet café, a roof-top swimming pool, a casino, a cactus garden, waterfall, an orchidee garden, sports centre and many many restaurants and cafes.
And these are just some of the facilities.
Singapore airlines is the main airline operating at Changi but most of the other larger airlines fly into Singapore.
Many buses run between the airport and the city centre and taking a taxi is cheap.

    Yes and about fast arrival...
The time it took from when my plane landed until I was sitting in a cab heading for the city centre was less than 30 minutes.
That included getting off the plan, immigration and baggage reclaim.
I can only say I am deeply impressed, some other Asian authorities should really come to Singapore to learn how to efficiently handle arriving passengers (which was also done in a friendly way).
    Well done!
