This is a great museum with fantastic collections. They usually offer free entrance on designated times so check their website before you go.
Notes:
1. You can swing by after checking out the Chijmes (which you must do early in the morning when you can still appreciate the architecture absent the oh-no-im-in-a-party-place feeling).
2. If you like walking, it's 20minutes away from the Merlion site.
3. From here, you can walk to Orchard, have a cup of fantastic coffee at the cafe in Carlton Hotel, or go to another museum.

Our national art museum is small but makes effort to bring in new exhibitions from local, regional and international collections. The current exhibition on chalcography works all the way from the Lourve museum side by side with the exhibtion with Zeng Fan Zhi's works (an up and coming chinese contemporary artist) is testament to this. Free entry on friday evenings from 6-9 pm. Otherwise its a mere $8 for adults.

I was initially not very enthusiastic since I knew that the museum features modern Singapore art, and this is not particularly known to be the mainstream. However, the museum proved to be excellent. The fusion of European and Asian art, presented by European educated artists of Chinese origin is impressive. I have never seen anything like this in Europe or in the US. I was best impressed by the works of Tan Swie Hian, check here.

Located between the City Hall and Dhoby Ghaut MRT station, the museum in housed in the former St. Joseph’s Institution, which has moved to an area northwest of Orchard Road. The museum has changing exhibits as well as permanent collections of mostly Singaporean and some regional artist, mostly painters. I found the museum interesting.

Located in a 19th century mission school -the Singapore Art museum houses mainly a collection of graphic art. A few times a year they have some great exhibits-such as Botero earlier this year. Some days/evenings they have free admission. Look at their website for details.

This museum is in an old Colonial building worth a visit in itself. The art collection is nice but small.
